I found that tracking helps me know how many items I wear over a season....that is, how many I really need. I see that I have about the right number of bottoms but too many tops for summer. Oh, and I do not need any more dresses or skirts. This is based on wearing an item once a week during the season. Actually I could wear everything twice a week.

Cat, wow—that’s pretty slick, pulling out a Bible verse to say “don’t get a big head”. Anyways, I hope my relationships will always be able to withstand my delight at winning a game, that I will be able to appreciate when a friend is better at something than I am, that we’ll be able to tease and cajole and work through things together. If you can’t feel a little pumped at something as simple as an argument won (an argument in which the opposing position was that you’re insane), what *can* you do in a friendship, besides utter empty niceties?

Great post, Sterling. I'm not a tracker but I do make note of those items I often reach for vs those that always nod to me from their permanent homes on hangars.

So what?

I know how many items I have And I love them and have my own systems for wearing them all. Nevertheless, I don't see the point of tracking. It doesn't give me any inspiration at all. Your friends might feel the same way.

I must confess that I shudder when I read that you "feel triumphant." Are you really their FRIEND? I sincerely hope you show that you love and respect them. "Love is patient and kind. ...

Suz, so if I continued through the end of the year, you think I’d get usable info? Hmm. I’m having a hard time getting myself to do it. When I get dressed, it’s time to leave. At the end of the day, when I know everything I’ve worn that day (not predictable when I wake up), there are other obstacles (that i just wrote & deleted TMI about). I’ll have to think about making it automatic.

Bj1111, ikr? Lol! Just shows how much I hate bra shopping.

Sterling, I don’t think I really know solid numbers on anything, but I can see that whereas I expected to wear the pink and white pants interchangeably and equally, there are things the white pants can do that the pink ones can’t, and they get a lot more wears. And nightgowns! I had Lanz flannel nightgowns. In my head i loved them and felt deliciously warm in them in the winter. In reality, they twisted around me in my sleep, so I took them off before bed. I always needed socks with them, and except for a magic occasional day, if it was cool enough for the nightgown, it was cool enough to need long johns and probably a sweatshirt too. Not fab. I can’t remember if I kept them. I’m missing them on these 60 degree nights, even though I know how impractical they were.

In my defense, most have been good buys, but i have 11 fall winter things i haven't worn yet. So, shopping hiatus

Let me tell you the primary reason I track my wardrobe: pajamas. I have some very weird need to shop and buy pajamas every single day of every single year. I love them.

One year, pre-YLF, I wondered how many sets of pajamas did I actually own. It was not an arduous task to pull them out and count, but it was an enlightening exercise. I owned A LOT. Obviously I owned much more than I needed. A lot were unworn and would never be worn.

I realized I had a weird problem (not one I bring up in public very often).

I listed all of my pajama sets. Every time I went to the store to buy yet another set I pulled out my tattered list and asked myself how much was enough? Did I own enough? Did I need to buy another set?

That tattered piece of paper prevented me from continuing to buy pajama sets. Now I have a reasonable number in my wardrobe.

From there it was an easy leap to other clothing categories. By knowing how many items I own in a given category I can began to understand how many I actually need in that category to meet my needs. I can see when certain categories began to explode in numbers. At a glance, I see what items I reach for and what colors are most often worn.

Although I talk about black pants on the Forum all the time, I only own two pair of black pants and three pair of navy pants. I know that I wear the black much more frequently than I wear the navy. Based on my analyses, I also know what a reasonable price is for a pant such that I get good value. I set upper limits of what I am willing to pay for different categories.

Sometimes I wonder what my wardrobe would look like if I did not take the time to think these things through because I am both impulsive and compulsive. Being self aware, I have implemented little tricks to keep me and my budget in line.

I didn't mean to explode on your post, Sisi. I am impassioned.

You know when I realized how important tracking was, SarahD8?

..... well .... I always thought tracking was important ....

But to your point, I think it was last year, Jenn brought up the 30 wears thing. Were you here then? Anyway, I thought HA!!!! I wear all of the my clothes 30 times and I have the numbers to prove it. So I sat down and began to respond to Jenn's post with actual numbers because I knew I easily wore them at least 30 times.

As it turns out, when I reviewed the actual numbers I was shy of 30 times .... repeatedly. Line item after line item proved me in error. I did wear my clothes a lot, but I hadn't achieved the fabled 30 times nearly as often as I thought. I was shocked.

It was quite a learning experience for me.

This is great, Sisi!! I wonder if your friend will begin to track?

I don't track regularly but I did find it really useful to do for a season, and I intend to do it again more rigorously now that I'm living in a new climate. As for what I got from it, Fashintern, I seem to be like you in that I do remember (at least within a few weeks) what I have worn and I always know what I have in the closet...but, for instance, when I counted up the number of wears a certain pair of jeans got over an entire season I had to ask myself why I preferred those to others and this led to future purchasing decisions.

Jenn, that is hilarious. Hope you got something good out of it. :)

Sarah08, I'm giving it a try this month, so far haven't had any revelations I hadn't already realized myself. Jenn posed a question about what colors I'm wearing; I answered it by looking through my closet before pulling up the data. Both gave me the same answer--I'm not wearing neutrals. The reason is easy; I only have colored bras, so light-colored tops don't work until it's cool enough to put something over them. I'm going to continue the exercise through the end of the month; maybe something will come up.

FashIntern, re: analysis vs. observation, for me the usefulness of tracking is that it reveals my observations aren't very accurate! Like I can remember thinking to myself: "wow, I wore the heck out of that top this summer," and then when I look back at my tracking sheet I see that I wore it 4 times. The mind plays funny tricks! Similar to what Sisi and Jenn are describing re: the amount of clothing people think they have vs. the amount they actually have.

I think the information is interesting but I doubt that I will track past the challenge. The biggest counting related aha I had with clothing was when I was losing weight and realized that I had enough clothing to get through winter without buying any new clothing as long as I did laundry more often. I made a decision to save the money for new spring/summer items. The concept of how many opportunities I have per season or year to wear something, or how many I have left this season, has proven useful. Also, wearing something I had stopped wearing before purchasing something new.

I hear you about “loyalty”. I have occasionally had dreams about a dress I got in 8th grade and wore once or twice before it was washed. All the knife pleats came out. My mom returned the dress. With weight loss, I did want to buy some new things, but there were also a lot of old friends I was glad to get together with again.

Yeah maybe but I felt like she was kind of secretly just wanting to get that new thing and ditch something she fell out of love with? I used to take her cast-offs when we were in our twenties. She is younger and was always more fashionable than me back in the day. Our tastes are still not that similar.
I don't usually just fall out of love with stuff, or not for a long time. More loyal to the stuff I suppose!

JenniNZ, that’s odd. I would expect someone with a lot of.churning and changing would have more of a need to keep track of what they had.

I've had a few surprised and amazed people too. One is my sister ( who lives in the UK). She was visiting. She just stared at me and said ( when I asked her if she ever did) "but why would I want to do that?". We have always had different approaches. She, however, has always churned through clothes. Must be what she wants I guess. I don't want to go there really as think she would take it as criticism.

I don't think you are crazy. I too believe that when people have a "feeling" of how often they wear something or how many tee shirts they own, they are wildly incorrect. I think you will benefit greatly from tracking. I know I did.

Here is the thing. People are so different. Some have analytical minds that really, really enjoy playing with numbers. Others are far less analytical and they never quite "get" the number thing. Whereas tracking for me is fun and beneficial, a different sort of person would never derive the same joy, interest, or benefits. It is just how our minds work.

So nothing in your post surprises me. I'm also guessing she will never be the type that tracks because her brain doesn't work that way.

This past Sunday I had lunch
with 2 friends and I mentioned that I
track my clothes. They looked at me as if I were crazy and asked why I do
such a thing. I explained my reasons and, among others, I mentioned that figures give
you real, objective info, that can differ from what is in your mind. I asked them how many clothes /shoes they think they have. One of the two said she thinks she has 50. Since we were at her home, I said, let’s
go count! We counted. Well, she has 110 pieces of clothing/shoes. She was
shocked! I confess that I felt triumphant, like, see? do you still
think I'm crazy?

Just wanted to share.
