Yes, I sent them a reply email retelling the saga so far, and excerpting the previous customer service emails which have contradicted themselves. They seem to respond to emails only during UK business hours, so I'll hopefully hear something back tomorrow.

You're right, gradfashionista, that it can cause difficulty; I can rejigger things this time but there have definitely been some points in my life where an extra surprise $100+ on my cc would have been a serious issue. Not to mention the logistical issues with receiving a package and possibly having to go somewhere (during business hours) to get it returned. Especially when we're talking international shipping and it well could take more than one billing cycle to get things sent, returned and refunded.

Marilyn, something similar happened to me with Madewell (which is owned by J Crew): I was able to order and check out, my credit card was charged, and I even got an order confirmation. Then several days later I got a phone message (not even an email, which was weird) saying they were out of stock and wouldn't be able to send my order. I think they refunded my cc pretty quickly, but still, for a big company with a significant online presence it was very small potatoes.

With Hotter, I'm not surprised they sold out of something - they've got one small factory in the UK where they make all their shoes, they're not Payless or Target or something - but the way they've dealt with the order has been painful to participate in.

That's so frustrating.
The same thing happened to me with a J Crew cardigan. It was back ordered but I went ahead and ordered. I've done so before and they ship out the item when it becomes available. Well, weeks and weeks went by and nothing. The ship date listed passed. I contacted customer service and they had nothing to say except it will ship when available. A couple weeks later I got an email that the order was cancelled. Ugh!

Did you send them an email explaining why their service was mediocre? Stories like that annoy to no end because if you're trying to balance a budget, and out of the blue your card is charged, it can result in needless problems.
I had that happen with a DL1961 pair of jeans, where I was notified that it was out of stock (no option for shipping when in stock), and the company then shipped me the pair a month later, and wrote to complain that they couldn't charge my card (which had since expired). I was very annoyed, because it resulted in having to find a printer to print their shipping label, and head to the UPS office to ship a package I didn't want.

I do hope you get your shoes, though. Most annoying.

Quick update on Hotter: I got an email yesterday saying "good news, your order has shipped" with no item details. Wrote them back asking what they were talking about, as I'd received an email in early January confirming that the oxfords I'd ordered were permanently out of stock and that my order would be canceled. Apparently the shoes are available again, and without checking with me or anything, they went ahead and sent them to me.

So....story is that there are some shoes on their way to me. Maybe. Perhaps. And Hotter's customer service is desperately in need of some retraining, or a tracking system for backorders, or something, because one hand is completely unaware of what the other hand is doing.

The shoes are returnable so we'll see if I like them or not when they arrive. But they're going to have to be the best shoes ever to make me want to deal with this company again.

How disappointing!
I love my Naot oxfords, and they come in a beautiful burgundy option. (Jenava has the burgundy ones.)

To be fair, the CS rep was polite and apologetic in his response; I just found it sketchy that I had to contact them rather than them having contacted me once the promised shipping date had passed. And they didn't offer any additional discount on future purchases to apologize for the inconvenience, but maybe that's more of an American thing.

The reviews on the actual shoes were pretty good, so I was looking forward to trying them out. I think it was Alasse that was thinking of ordering some from their German store - not sure if she has yet. Maybe the service to Europe is better.

Oh well, I am off to Kohls to return an unwanted Christmas gift and use my store credit - maybe I'll find an unexpected jewel there...

Thanks for the update on them. They are a company I had considered trying out, but they are out of the UK, so I have been more leery. I think I will stick with Zappos and Nordies.

That does indeed sound frustrating. I'm glad you reported to us. It's always helpful to know which companies are giving good customer service and which are not.

And I hope you find your footwear soon!

At the beginning of December I decided to try ordering a pair of Hotter oxfords, since they'd sent me a discount code which was expiring. Website said they'd be backordered until right before Christmas. OK, I said, it's not a rush. Never heard an update after the supposed date they'd be shipped, so I sent them a status query yesterday. Oh, those are sold out and there won't be any more, they say, and no explanation as to why they hadn't notified me already. I'm disappointed, not just about the shoes not being available, because that sort of thing happens, but in their lack of communication and customer service. You'd like to think that dealing with a smaller company and paying higher prices would get you a more pleasant experience, but not in this case.

Whelp, back to the drawing board. Too bad most of the other oxfords I've been eyeing have sold out in my size in the meantime. Nordstrom has a couple Born pair but I'd really like something that's neither black nor a reddish brown, which seem to be the two dominant choices this year.

This is the frustrating thing about only trying to shop a few times a year - I'm trying to buy anything else I need for the rest of winter, but half of it is sold out or not available in my size, and the other half is in the wrong colors.
