This is why I ALWAYS bring this up on the "skinny model" threads--because when people make these thoughtless comments, it really DOES affect people and make them think it's ok, when it's just plain rude! When you say "give that girl a cheeseburger," try and think for a minute: Would you ever tell a large woman to "stop eating so many cheeseburgers?"

Sooo disgusting. Makes me mad.

Anyway, there has GOT to be a more competent place around.

If this guy's shop has a page on Yelp, I would not hesitate to use it to warn others.

I wouldn't put your hopes in Nordies. Certainly give it a try, but I think the flagship Nordies is just special. When I ask them for some of the services I have heard about here, they look at me like I have two heads.

Wow! I would have asked him if his mother taught him any manners! How rude. He could have just said no.

Good luck on your cobbler search, a good one is a useful cohort indeed

Sorry to hear about your experience Kristine.

I have a great cobbler nearby who's always been very accommodating; I'm lucky, but I think it's worth finding someone who actually listens to your requests and does a good job.

I don't understand though how people can be so thoughtlessly rude. Is it out of a misplaced attempt to be friendly?

I found my cobbler from heaven about 20 years ago by calling Neiman Marcus and asking who they recommend.

Before that , when I asked someone to tighten boots, they always said no. One said he didn't even know it could be done.

My goodness -- given the price tag of a boot alteration, you'd think he'd be thrilled to see you come through the door. I do think people (even cobblers, apparently) don't realize that boots are supposed to fit your leg -- that's why wide-calf boots abound and narrow-calf are non-existent. You're supposed to be happy if it closes, never mind if there's a gap the size of a Buick.

BTW, I saw your question on my boot alteration thread, Kristine -- for narrowing the calf of a boot, my cobbler charges $80. He charged me only $70 this time because of the long delay, but not cheap either way. That's why it took me so long to find boots that were still affordable after factoring in the after-market cost. <sniff>

Oy, not nice. It reminds me when I went to the cobbler in my town looking for mink oil (isn't it the basic thing for a shoe store??), for the life of me he couldn't understand what I needed.. He said that I could just leave the boots there and he'd take care of them... I didn't feel comfortable doing that, wonder why?
Good luck finding a better one!

Exactly Taylor! I could add my own page of rude comments also.

You're right, I'll go elsewhere. It's a shame because he's a mile from my house, but it's probably for the best.

I love how utterly thoughtless comments are to slim women...they would never consider saying such things to someone large.
I could write a whole page on comments received because of my size.

Back to your boots...go elsewhere my friend..these are great boots and someone will know what to do..he obviously isn't skilled enough or confident enough to handle the job!

How frustrating:( Eat more? Wear a sock? Really? Good grief.

These scary cobbler stories are starting to make me worry. I'm taking a pair of boots to the cobbler on Monday for narrowing. Eek.

That's disappointing. I'm sure you'll be able to find someone who is more professional. If that's his attitude, you might not be happy with his work anyway. Good luck finding a good one!

I tried to take my dress boots in to have the calf tightened up.

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....n-the-calf

There's a cobbler just down the street so I was looking forward to taking them in on my day off. It didn't go well at all.

First he couldn't understand why I even wanted them tightened (do they fall down??). Then he suggested I could start by "eating more". I'm sure he was trying to be funny but I left feeling a little irritated about his comment. Would he tell a woman who wanted boots stretched that she should "eat less"? No, of course not. Aggravating.

His next suggestion was, not even kidding, that I take a sweat sock and cut the toes out and wear it around my calf to make them fit better. Seriously?? He's a cobbler!

I can only guess judging by his shelves that he had enough work and just didn't want to mess with it. There's one or other two places in town I can try. That was the first time I ever walked into a shoe repair place. Not very encouraging.
