Oh, how timely for me. Recently, as I was cleaning out some old files, I found some tears I'd pulled from magazines, some going back 15 or 20 years. And I'm amused at how many of the refined punk looks still resonate. Le smoking with studs and chains. High necked Victorian lace blouses with combat boots. Early Barbie winged eyeliner with a leather biker jacket.

Like you, juxtaposition really trips my trigger, though lately, for me, it's morphed from that really obvious high/low to a jarring culture clash: saturated candy acid brights in a pretty styling.

That last sentence is truly compelling, Diana. How you take the components and execute the outfit. That's what would be really key for me to start thinking about. I am in this case such a micro/item-oriented person rather than macro/outfit visionary.

I have a BR top with a big ruffle collar like that! Mine is a single color (grey) and sleeveless. I believe it is actually from the late 00's, so I think they were quite trendy then. I call it my "frilled lizard" top. Agree that it is best with something sharp and a little hard. I have to say that I don't wear it often though, not because I don't like it, but because it is a PITA to iron.

I definitely have certain consistent things/styles that are always in my wardrobe. Floral prints, crazy printed pants (I've always had a pair or two even when they're not in style at all), black boots (a friend once told me she thought of me as that "black boots girl"!), leather jackets. The difference is that I'm better at executing those things nowadays.

I think intuition is like a muscle--it definitely gets stronger with use. My intuition led me to make some wacky purchases back then, but it's so much more honed now. I'd feel much more comfortable going with it nowadays. I do feel it's good (in theory, at least) to delve into WHY something works, or doesn't. But if your intuitive self already knows, it may not be so imperative.

No, I understand, Nancy. When Steph asked me to think of outfits I actually felt good in, I had to dig back two decades to think of any! Most people could probably go back a day or two...

It's funny -- analyzing has been helpful (but sometimes paralyzing, as Angie warns). And in this phase, I am allowing intuition to reign more strongly again, because it seems to be guiding me in the right directions. For a while there I just couldn't trust my intuitions because I was picking up stuff higgledy piggeldy that didn't work, and couldn't for the life of me figure out why!

Hmm, I would have loved to see you in your houndstooth and boots outfit, Suz.

It's interesting how you put a great amount of stock in the hair. I think you're right (though Lord knows, I will not be having long, flowing byronesque locks anytime soon). I was just reading how the actress Ginnifer Goodwin was describing her intention to keep her pixie cut forever. She said her own face was boring and that the hair was the only way she could give her look any edge. LOL (and no boringness directed at you at all!)

For me, maybe I'm making excuses...because a major point of YLF is to figure ways of breaking things down in explainable ways...but I'm so intuitive and feel insecure when trying to be analytical about things. But I will try to work at it. Your examples here are very helpful so I'll try working on them. I think it's only very recently when I have a few key outfits I actually wore that I feel great about. Pathetic, isn't it?

Oh, I finally got thru to Canon tech support and got my scanner to work. Here is that outfit.

I was the one who made the handwritten note to self: blazer. At the time I was distinctly anti-ruffle. Now I think the arty, modern ruffles here elevate this outfit to something special, but that's because they're juxtaposed with a harder edge. By themselves, they would read too dainty and ladylike to me.

Interesting! I wonder how many of us would find the same consistency over time. I suspect I would, as well.

Mrs. Eccentric (Steph) advised me once to try to come up with my favourite outfit ever -- one I'd worn, that is. Ideally, visuals to go with it, but that proved difficult, as at the time, I couldn't come up with any pictures. (I since discovered a few).

Here was her helpful analysis. My style has evolved some since then (and continues to) but the basic elements of my "best" remembered outfits are still the basic elements of favourite outfits today and do fit into the "urban prince" style descriptor.

Outfit #1 was great fitting jeans with houndstooth jacket, black turtleneck, monk's strap docs.

Outfit #2 was a very simple 2 piece dress in pale grey silk. Fluid fit. Elegant, feminine, and minimal.

Not the capsule we're usually referring to here. It's from when I first started actively pursuing an interest in clothes, and some clarification on my style. Around 2007 or 2008 I began collecting pictures of clothes and looks that resonated with me. (I didn't start bookmarking things off the internet till a bit later.) Just yesterday I found the folder containing many of these ripped-out pages from places like Lucky Mag and so forth.

Of course there were one or two items I was definitely over, but the great thing was how much I have continued to identify with some key concepts. It further backs up the assessments you all are helpfully making here for me and my style intentions.

I see a few things that have not changed, including romantic, vintage, antique as well as hard, minimalist, modern, futuristic.

I think that if I am ever going to be a style genius what I really need to do is to combine the different elements into one outfit. What I've learned is that I love is the tension of opposing dynamics. Masculine/feminine, boxy/flowy, etc.

These were all hard-copy items and not all was I able to find online, but here is one of them. I am still crazy about it (in this case I mean the jacket specifically. It does look nice with the dress, but that's incidental):

http://www.boston.com/bostongl.....rself?pg=8

(ETA better view of this luscious jacket: http://www.closetcouture.com/items/4920/view/ )

Another one, from Lucky Mag, I could not find a pic of the woman wearing the exact outfit, but here is the blouse, by Sretsis:

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_bXdr.....og+005.jpg

I wish I could show you her pic. She has long, dark Byronesque curls, and is wearing this blouse tucked into a cognac-colored leather schoolboy blazer so that only the powder blue ruffles are exposed, draped over the lapels of the blazer like a waterfall. She's wearing it with dark-wash skinny jeans, a vintage-looking brown belt, a lacy gold bracelet and some red heels (which add the requisite sexy/feminine, but I am neutral on the heels).

As those of you familiar with my style goals would recognize, this is a romantic poet, dramatic, crisp and soft look that I find so appealing. It's got drama, exoticism and edge, but mostly in the details.

It's great to confirm that at core, my ideals haven't shifted much at all.
