Jenn, pleats are not essential, but a nice design detail. The links you provided have great potential. Who made those pants? The outfit I put together looks great with just the burgundy and navy too.

Jenn, I've been ogling pants from this Etsy store for almost a year now. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1....._active_19 I notice this year they do have more wide leg styles, but there are a few options for more of a tapered leg in there. They make everything to order. I got a dress from them last year that I was incredibly happy with. Since fit is so important for these types of pants, made to order might be worth the wait.
https://www.etsy.com/listing/2....._active_61 Here's a second pair with a lovely shape.

I found them very helpful and receptive to questions.

Angie! I like it! The blue and citron make it you, but I love the burgundy boots and scarf. I have a black turtleneck pullover (mine is ribbed) that I could press into service for something similar. A question: do you think the pleats are necessary to get the right look for someone already curvy like me? I'm having a hard time finding that shape in my size, but maybe something just relaxed and tailored like one of the below would work?

Gray are from Eileen Fisher. Brown from Poetry.

Jenn, I decided to keep the COS pants. They fit and feel SOOO good. I'm making them pretty in cool weather by adding:

Refined and dressy flat shoes

Yes, I was just going to echo what Shevia just said. I think this is all about pulling off the fit in the pants. There seem to be lots of pants out there that are marked high waisted, but don't really come all the way up to the natural waist. I think the look starts to skew androgynous when the curve of the waist is obscured. In your examples, 5 seems more menswear than the rest.

The other adjustment I had to make was getting used to pulling my pants up to my natural waist. I realized I had a couple of pairs of pants that would work like this, but I tended to slouch them down to atleast my belly button.

In my view, moniker wise, this is gamine instead of tomboy, but a mature version, not a youthful version.

I definitely see the appeal. I don't even think slouchy ankle lengths have landed in many places yet, so I wouldn't worry about it going out soon. For me it would be a question of very well cut pants for my body shape, so that I could even consider tucking.

I love this kind of look and feel good in it if I feminize it just enough. Doesn't take much - make up, earrings and watch and bracelet and ring, something nice in the textures. You wear silks so well and a silk blouse tucked drapes really nicely to the point where you don't really feel it is "tucked" -- it is more "bloused" if you know what I mean -- and a bit easier to wear.

Traci, I actually thought of you as I was posting this!

annagybe, some of those looks are a good example of where I don't want to go. It feels like she's playing up the androgyny.

Beth Ann, I think this is a slightly different vibe than the wide leg? These pants seem to be more of a relaxed, tailored fit.

lisap, I kind of wear a similar shape to this with jeans or chinos, but what makes this look for me is the versions that use dressier menswear fabrics. That's what brings the "classy and sophisticated" in my mind. I hope you're right about the longevity!

AndiB, yes, that's it exactly with the Pinterest images!

Sterling, fingers crossed.

runcarla, ...and you wear it well! I'm less of a happy tomboy than an angsty bohemian, though. ;)

rachylou, sneakers!

Emily K, I am going to go check out your WIW with these pants next!

This IS my look - (Happy Tomboy moniker) in part because an ankle pant always fits, whereas long pants with a long enough inseam are hard to find. You can fem it up with a pussy bow blouse, a silky neckerchief, or interestingly textured top.

Jenn, I know what you mean. I am busty and I have a difficult relationship with tucked shirts. I do love a half tuck and find it easiest to wear. I also prefer lower rises to get more room between bust and waistband. I can make full tuck work especially if the fit of the top is close and the pants aren't too cinched at the waist--mitigates the potato sack effect.

Jenn, I like this silhouette, too, and I hope it's not dated. It still looks plenty current to me, anyway. I especially like 2 and 3 with the long top layer added. I think you can do it with a semi tuck, or even a very bloused semi-tuck. Sometimes I'll barely tuck a little of a top into my waistband, especially if the pants are high-waisted, and I like the effect. In colder weather, you can substitute lace-up boots and roll the pants to near the top of the boot.

Do you normally tuck your tops, Emily? That would be a big shift for me. Of course, I also have to find a pair of trousers in this shape in my size, which isn't turning out to be particularly easy.

I like that look! I bought these pants (finds) and I enjoy wearing them although they fall into the JFE camp I think (I hope!). So far, I've worn them with long and short sleeve tee's (tucked or half tucked), with a slim-fitting sweater (fully tucked), and with a button-front (semi-tucked). I wish I had a beautiful, fluid tank to pair with them. I struggle with the shoes. A high vamp feels stumpifying to me. I've worn these pants with both the shoes shown.

Angie, exactly! Too tomboy is an issue for me too, though for different reasons than you. Looks can skew masculine on me because I am tall, with less delicate features (I share the specs, flat footwear, and lack of nail polish with you), I suppose the answer is to just try it on...my solution will be to try pairing it with a healthy dose of lace, and my wavy hair worn down.

YES. I like the vibe too, Jenn.

I like #4 best here.

I am deciding about these COS trousers (see Find). Need to assess whether the vibe can be "Urban Pretty", and not too Tomboy. With my body type and short hair, specs, love for flat footwear, lack of nail polish and minimal jewellery - things veer into Tomboy territory very easily, and it's not what I want.

Ankle pants (in any form except cuffed denim) have barely penetrated where I live -- probably because it's cold so much of the year. I really hope I get to wear my cropped bottoms for a couple more years...

I really like 4 and 5 -- the oxfords give it a geek-chic vibe that I really enjoy.

I like this look a lot. I haven`t seen in IRL but that means nothing.

Sal, #3 is a bit high-contrast for me, but I do like those pinstripes!

These all look pretty cool to me, i like 3 but it would not suit me (I can't do white and high waist together)...In all cases the footwear is very modern, the seperates are more classic, so it is all in the wearing.

Here it is all about the skinny jean still with a few harems and genie pants, and the odd cropped denim...
