I don't expect so much from advertising campaigns, and, within those expectations, this one is thought provoking for better or for worse. (I guess for better from Dove's point of view.) I guess one could twist it around and say that if these women that start out closer to the blonde, thin ideal need so much reassurance the rest of us must be in a fine mess.

I did see a parody video about men and thought it was very funny, although I don't actually think all or most men think that way.
Somehow it seems to me that the more of this "real beauty" stuff that Dove puts out, the more disingenuous and cynical it appears. I found the message that you are prettier than you think to be a nice one, but at the same time I have been increasingly bothered by the notion that being pretty should be my main goal.

I read a truly horrible article today (entitled "Any woman who wants to stay beautiful (like me!) needs to diet every day of her life") with such an extreme pro-dieting, anti-fat message that I had to wonder if the author was being sarcastic. After all, how many women would be proud that their only apparent value to their husbands is to be thin -- and putting on any weight would mean divorce? Or proudly declare that "for three decades, self-denial has been my best friend"? Or her main conclusion, that "there is nothing in life that signifies failure better than fat"?

I think why this video went viral so fast, and why it falls apart on analysis, is that women really DON'T believe they are beautiful. The message that yes, we are, is very powerful indeed.

Did they prove that women are beautiful by the exercise in the video? That's obviously debateworthy - what's the definition of beautiful? Is beauty only skin deep? - but they don't have to prove so many of us don't think we are. We don't.

So the message works, but the backup for it doesn't. Interesting.
This is one of those nebulous brand-building campaigns that isn't intended to have a direct impact on sales, not like -- putting money into an endcap at Target or funding a temporary price reduction. It is intended to (hopefully) improve brand awareness, depth and image. A stronger brand lets the corporation do things like brand extensions, justifies more space at retail, increases corporate equity. The fact that this has gone viral and is the topic of discussion means it has already fulfilled the "improve awareness" as we are talking about it.

Now, in terms of the video itself -- I feel they should have used less pretty women, more diversity in age and race, not all thin, etc. So I agree with the critic. Especially with the premise that beauty is so critical for women.

I read and agreed with that article and I *really* didn't like the Dove beauty video. But I didn't want to rain on the parade of everyone in the other thread by posting it.

My issues with Dove's ad:
No forensic artist can make a sketch simply based off a person's verbal description - they usually use reference images of noses, etc.
Who knows exactly what their face looks like? I could never describe my face in that much detail unless I was looking at a mirror.
Ok, fine, we're more beautiful than we think we are, but since when is it required to be beautiful? If one were "ugly", is that person any less worthy of existence/respect? Moreover, beauty is in the eye of the beholder - once you know someone, their inner beauty (or lack thereof) informs your perception of their outer beauty. Also, I would have found it much more convincing if they'd shown beauty from the POV of multiple cultures, with a wide range of ages.
When I first saw the video, it appealed to me emotionally, and I think I said so.

Then, the brain kicked in. I realized that of course people found these women attractive. All of them were pretty by conventional standards. All of them.

Either way, I still won't be changing my buying patterns because of it. I don't buy any Dove products and I still won't.

It is an interesting premise for a "social experiment". WOrking with people with Alzheimer's, I think it would actually be very interesting to do such an exercise with that population, in part to see which stage of life the individual feels they are in.
I do find these ads a bit disingenuous, in that most of the people they choose are fairly attractive anyway, and conform to fairly mainstream beauty standards, they just look more like regular people. Seems like these things are a gimmick to make us feel the brand is more accessible (like Jacob doing ads that they claim are unretouched).
Doesn't really change my desire to buy the product one way or the other. I just like how Dove smells and my husband won't use anything else!

I agree that the message loses power with repeated viewings. I also agree with the saying, "No one can make you feel bad without your permission." So as hard as it can be some days, I choose not to feel bad about the way I look. Some days are easier, some days are harder, and yes, I think my friends are more beautiful than they think they are. But it really is a conscious choice for me.

Anything (including the Dove campaign) that helps someone re-think his/her negative self-image is a good thing in my book. (BTW, I just checked: I do not have any Unilever/Dove products, and don't intend to purchase any.)

Angie, I agree. As a rhetorician, it's pretty obvious that the ad's message was stacked.

I do believe we should all be kind to ourselves. I also believe there is more than one definition of beauty.

Would this ad make it more or less likely for you to buy Dove products?
This was VERY interesting. I have to say, that the author makes some valid points.

When I first watched the Dove video, I thought it was great! And said so on the thread. (I can't remember who posted it here on the forum).

Then I watched it again, and was far less impressed. I watched it again and felt a little annoyed. Now I'm left thinking that it wasn't all that compelling. Just not very believable.

You can give me the Wet Blanket Award.

:(

Interesting. I agree that the video's overall definition of beauty was highly conventional and quite limited, whatever the intentions. And it must have felt a bit scary for those women to participate, not really knowing where they were going or what they were doing. OTOH, it was interesting to see the differences between the pictures. And a good reminder to treat ourselves with kindness.
