I have loved looking through these photos and seeing everyone's changing do's.

Although I am new here, you will see that hair talk is one of my favourite things! Some of these are terrible quality, as they are photos of old photos, but you will get an idea.

Going back to my natural hair 15 years ago was a game changer for me. I was simply tired of forcing my curls into submission with chemicals and/or heat since childhood. I think I look more youthful and love wearing the boldest statement earrings every chance I can.

Quick break from work -- fun thread!

Here's me with long hair, bang version! Around 2nd grade or so my mom chopped it into a short Joey Heatherton cut as apparently I'd cry when she'd brush it out since it's fine and would get all tangly. (I remember loving that cut so much). I've pretty much worn it "somewhere" above my shoulders ever since, as whenever it grows past my shoulders it starts to break and look really ratty.

I've had it super short/pixie length. I've had the Farrah Fawcett wings. Yes I went through the perm years! Some time in college I got a really bad cut that had the ears cut out, and a lot of height on the top, and a "tail" in back. Shudder.

I also went for some years when the kids were young with it sorta touching my shoulders.... and always just pulling it back in a pony to get it off my face. Oh and there were the Melrose Place years, when I had a Heather Locklear sort of layered longish cut (which would rarely behave and would basically do a reverse flip at the end).. And of course you are all well familiar with my chin-length and shorter reverse bob -- my favorite.

Like Rachy, I feel that when my hair gets longer I look more .. tired. Or something. It's an odd combination of younger but older? I feel like it drags my face down? Anyway, just had it chopped this week and it's shorter: just above chin length, still tuckable behind the ears. I think it looks more polished when shorter, it's also less flat on top (so adds to my height!), is way easier to manage, looks healthier, and brings the focus to my eyes rather than my chin and neck!

Show of hands for everyone who had an "unfortunate perm" at some point? I no longer have the pictures to shame me. I've been some flavor of pixie for 25 years, with one bang/bob exception that took a long time to achieve and did nothing for me. I have no patience to do more than blow dry my hair in the mornings, despite acquiring half a dozen tools that promised to be quick and easy. And 50 products likewise.

However, Blue Collar Red Lipstick has just gotten the loveliest, subtle perm, and I am so tempted . . .

#1 College, 1980, giant glasses that make me look like a human fly

#2 ten years ago, baby bangs (ack)

#3 fifteen years ago

#4 twenty years ago, possibly the shortest.

#5 last year, the asymmetrical cut. I really liked this for a while, but eventually cut off the long side.

Here's to being willing to try new things!

Jenni, your ‘half mast’ looks great on you :). Funny how these eighties and nineties looks mirror those I saw on my mom in those periods (especially since she has similar hair color and texture to you), trends do really influence our hairdo’s alot apparently.

An aside: I had curly hair as a baby that seemed to straighten out as I got older. My curls didn’t come back (save for an unfortunate perm) until I was pregnant at 26.

Liesbeth, the “Rachel” looks pretty on you? But I do like pic 4.
I also had braces and glasses which upset me in teenage and I moaned to my mother that no boy would ever want to go out with me. Luckily after age 16 that was no longer true!

I love all of these picture shows! I’ll join, though with cheeks flushed in embarresment at my childhood pics.

1-2: my mom gave us all fringes, and even when I cut it short at age 11 it was more of a mullet than a pixie. I had this combination of aweful glasses, braces and short hair for three years, enough to ruin puberty for me, hah, and make me never want to return to short hair ;)

3: the rachel. Nuff said?

4: signature bob length. When my hair is long enough to put in a ponytail, I usually wear it that way and it’s not a flattering look, so this length is perfect. In between 3 and 4 I’ve had long hair with a fringe, bangs, and without a fringe, but I can’t pull it off very well unless it’s meticulously styled. I currently do this length as well but added a perm for some volume to my eternally flat hair. Looking at this older picture I think I’ll return to a straight bob happily once I get tired of perming.

My hair has always been a source of frustration for me, though I recognize by now that there are plenty with more to complain about and all in all, mine is healthy and manageable.

2-3 super spiral perms from the late 80s.

Short as a kid, longer 7-13. Short through high school. Grew it out first year of uni, then cut it short. Mostly short since 20's or at least above shoulder length - barely long enough to get into a stubby pony tail. I've spent the last year growing it from a shorter length to just below the ears inverted bob style that is a lot like my childhood style!

My hair is thick, coarse, and curly. It is a PITA to wash, dry, and style. Fighting the curl for a straight style is futile. Wash and go (air dry) works best for me - so shorter hair just works best.

I had long to mid length hair as a child, then my hair got curly when puberty hit me. I had no idea what to do with it. I cut it off for the first time when I was 14, then again with 17. I had long hair when I joined YLF and it got progressively shorter the longer I was here. I've had a pixie cut for a few years now and can't see myself changing. I think I'm simply a short haired person, deep in my heart. ;)

I went down into the archives to find some pictures and these are actually all of me wearing the same dress, a hand me down from my mum. I still have it, but I mostly wear it around the home in summer now. (And oh my god, some of my outfits... It was a steep learning curve for sure!)

I had major “mall bangs” in the 80s.... I wore slight variations of glam rocker hair for about a decade. Last winter I cut it a bit longer than shoulder length (like Lena Headey). My last cut I asked for a longer bob, but got a 70s shag and wound up looking like Mick Jagger. I’m waiting for it to grow out...

My profile pic is me with super short hair. And here I am with mid and long lengths. It looks a lot more polished the shorter it gets. And I look more tired the longer it gets. Still, I like long because I like to put it up and pull it back working in a bakery.

I will play. Here are some random photos.
#1, #3 and #5 - around age 35-40
#2, #4 around age 40-45

#6,#7,#8 - age around 30-35

It seems that I am switching between long and short hair every 5 years or so.

Photos from my childhood, teens and twenties are at my parents house. There are some interesting hair styles in that period But even then I was switching between long and short constantly.

I had one of those "body waves" (big poofy frizz) too, I think it took like 5 years to grow out There's a pic of me with very short hair as a child. Truly awful- scarred me for life! As long as it's been up to me, I've kept my hair shoulder length to long :)
And aww You and DS look so sweet!

In Angie's review of various hairstyles she has worn, I was struck by the difference long vs short hair makes. She looks great both ways, but totally different parts of her body/face are prominent going from short to long.

How about you? When have you worn your hair differently than you wear it now? Can we see a pic?

I had short hair growing up, grew it long in high school and got an 80s "body" perm. I went back and forth between short and long for the next couple decades. It grew exceptionally long and thick when I was pregnant with my son, which I enjoyed, but I also liked wearing it short when he was a tot. I've had it long for over 10 years now.
