This has been really educational. I think I have a high hip-- or carry weight there, however you say it. I guess that's why those fit and flare dresses which I always thought *should* fit me well, don't. Lightbulb moment. Thabk you all.

I have a low hip and need to wear my tops at high hip. A high hip top helps to draw attention away from my low hip body.

My understanding of the term high hip (vs low hip) as the same as abc's. It has to do specifically with your body, not to do with a garment. I have a high hip and thusly feel somewhat qualified to have that opinion - haha. It's especially noticeable when one has extra weight on - which I also do. Ugh.

I think they might be referring to a couple of things:

-some folks don't want a straight, horizontal top hem that contrasts with their pants and ends right at the very widest part of the their hips, because they feel that emphasizes the width of their hips, while if the top is a little shorter, or tunic length, it might not.

Other ways around this are semi-tucking (which forms a downward curve rather than a straight line, or asymmetrical or angled hems.

-also sometimes there is a length of top that looks like it cuts the body in half (50%), rather than visually being at 30% or 40% of the length of the column created by the body. (golden mean proportions and that kind of stuff)

-then there are proportions that work with what you are wearing. My very general habits are to wear tunic length tops with skinny bottoms, semi-tucked tops with mid-rise jeans, tucked or short (high hip) tops with high-waisted pants and skirts.

Something that was helpful for me was thinking about 8-hourglass vs. X-hourglass shape.
https://www.insideoutstyleblog.....shape.html
As to "hitting at an awkward point", personally as someone with wide hips, tops that end at my widest point might call visual attention to my hips. If I don't like my hips and their width I am probably looking to avoid that.
I don't think this is hard and fast rule though, it's one outfit consideration out of many, and different people may have different ideas about what makes for a nice figure :) In addition, the things we notice on ourselves may not be what other people see. For example as I've gotten older my shape has changed, my hips are no longer all that wide proportionately. My eye is still drawn there when I'm trying a dress on, because that's where I'm used to worrying about fit, but a sales assistant might be gently pointing out that something is tight on my stomach or arms instead.

In that case I believe they're talking more about the proportion - by hitting the hip in a certain spot it is affecting the outfit's proportion.

I think it also refers to where the bottom of an untucked top or sweater hits you (i.e. top of hip bone or close to start of thighs). Although this is an area I'm still learning about. I'd love if Angie did a post on the ideal top lengths for various bottoms. Are you thinking about top lengths?

High hip means you carry weight high up on the hip, closer to the waistline. Low hip means you carry weight lower, more traditional hip area. Hope this is what you meant and anyone else step in and correct me if I am off base. Not the best with words here!
