Deb, I noticed the pulling in the fabric when I examined the shirt before putting it on.

I had to click on this because I couldn't figure out how silk could cry!
Glad I did though, b/c now I know better how to care for my silk items - mostly scarves, in my case.

I don't currently own any silk but was considering adding some silk knits to my summer wardrobe. This was super educational!

I wash my Equipment silk shirts in the washer on delicate and dry them in the dryer on delicate. I have never had an issue. Are you noticing the tears right when they come out or after you have worn them?

I've had rips, or more often, the weave sort of pulled apart without any fibers being broken. But I machine-wash silk then air dry. You've all convinced me to switch to hand-washing. My favorite hand-wash method: get a big tupperware container. Add clothing, water, a bit of soap. Seal and shake for a little while!

I wash silk in the sink like Diana does. I usually hang to dry over the tub, sometimes rolling in a towel first to blot much of the moisture. I have never had any tears and some EF silk tanks are at least 5 years old.

Wow, this has been an education. I don't have any silk tops but am looking for one. Thanks for the information, Diana.

Silk fiber is strong when dry but weak when wet. I think this is why a lot of silk items have the instruction: "do not soak", which is kind of odd. The problem with washing in the machine is that all cycles are at least 20' or so, which is too long. "Delicate" cycles basically involve a long soak instead of more agitation, which will still weaken the silk but not as much. I hand wash my silk shirts in the sink with cold water, just basically push it around a bit (no wringing!), maybe about 5 minutes max, press the excess water out with a towel (instead of wringing) and hang to dry. If it's a thicker fabric or any kind of knit, I lay flat to dry instead of hanging.

A few years ago, I had a brief flirtation with silk shirts from J.Crew but found that they wore out within two wears, literally. The rips were in the fabric itself, not at the seams, and I thought it had something to do with the quality of the shirt. In the fall, I purchased an Equipment shirt, and now noticed the same issue in the back. I'm really disappointed, as I thought Equipment shirts were long-lasting, and that price point, I expect them to be. I bought the XS, which is still quite roomy, and have worn it maybe seven times. Is this normal? I wash them in the laundry machine, gentle, cold water, in a structured laundry bag. Our washer lacks the middle post often found in US/Can. machines. What could be causing the wear-and-tear?
