Ask your doctor but there is a better pneumonia shot out there now. The first ones lasted about 10 years, new ones are supposed to last longer. My mother died of pneumonia that she was exposed to in a hospital while recovering from a successful surgery.

Hope you both feel better soon. My DH went from fine to hospitalization in 3 or 4 days, and looking back had pneumonia in 2. I had no idea that could happen.

We have coyotes, bobcats, and for the first time, foxes. The folks who live across the little canyon--a couple of miles away--have mountain lions.

We also have hawks and falcons. I rescued one little finch from a falcon this year.

I have a much greater appreciation for nature and animal life since living in the foothills.

Joy, I checked and I had the pneumonia vaccination ten years ago. I'm going to check with my MD and see if I need it again.

Lovely turkey photos. You are lucky. We get goldfinches and magpies. All the eagles, foxes and coyotes in the area keep many things away.
Pneumonia is nothing to mess with. Have you and DH had the shots for it? Sending healing thoughts.

Fascinating article--thanks JAileen. I have been thinking about taking down the feeders for a few months, but now that they know me I don't think that will discourage them. Our landscaping suffered with the drought, and when we are ready to redo it, I'm afraid the turkeys will damage the young plants.

We had a pair of ducks that came every year during mating season, but I think a fox got them this year.

Hope you are both doing well and able to take some time to rest and recover. There was an NPR show (maybe This American Life) about aggressive wild turkeys on Nantucket. It was astounding. I have seen flocks of wild turkeys in Connecticut, but they have kept their distance.

I'm glad your husband is feeling better. Pneumonia is not to be taken lightly.

Your pictures are wonderful. On the front page of the Marin IJ yesterday was an article about wild turkeys taking over parts of the county.

http://www.marinij.com/general.....n-bay-area

Last year we were in rural Nevada and some turkeys started stalking us. I think they thought we were going to feed them. Beautiful, but a little scary!

Every day since Tuesday he's taken one big antibiotic pill and every day he's somewhat better. He still has a horrendous cough, but he can sleep at night and has his appetite back. The doctor said 5 days on the antibiotic and another 5 days after he should feel fine.

Thanks for your good wishes. Sun is out today and the turkeys are back. This has turned out to be a good time to start on the pile of books I've bought in the last couple of months.

So sorry to hear about your hubby and yourself. Take care of yourselves and know that T-day alone (if that what it comes to) isn't such a bad thing, though I know it seems sad contemplating not being with family/friends.

And you are never alone... not with those turkey!! Ha ha!

Our last home also had roaming neighborhood turkeys. More of an urban area. But turkeys nonetheless. They weren't as fat and beautiful as yours. Aggressive, yes. Or let's call them assertive. In our urban area, the social construct was to let them do their thing. I have lots of iPhone pictures of turkey crossings on urban streets, or turkey flocks rambling through our back yard...

Yes--I've learned a new vocabulary for turkeys. Chicks isn't the official name for the babies, poult and something else I've forgotten.

Just got off the phone with my sister, so feeling a bit cheerier. I also found some photos of the chicks from last year. They were hilarious when they got too big to pass through the fence. One or two would try and try and try. Turkeys aren't as stupid as we're led to believe, but sometimes they are incredibly dumb.

They let me get within two feet of them, but I've never tried to touch one. The Moms are very protective of the babies--they won't let the toms near them.

Oh, and they come and knock on the door or window with their beaks when they want me to come out and feed them.

Is ‘rafter’ the official word for a group of turkeys? I’ve never heard that before. I love it though.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. Meet my uninvited guests below.

We won't be going to our family Thanksgiving 200 miles away. I admit I won't miss the Bay area traffic--it's horrible to get there on the holiday.

We've both had some kind of bug with flu-like symptoms for about a week. DH was worse off. Monday he worked from home but had a very intense day. He developed a cough and yesterday I took him to Urgent Care. The doctor gave him the flu test--he didn't have it. Chest X-rays showed he has pneumonia. She gave him a strong antibiotic and some codeine cough medicine for night. He felt miserable yesterday, but is a bit better today. She said my immune system must have beat it down. I still don't feel 100%.

Depending on how he feels, we'll have our own Thanksgiving on Sunday or next week. Listened to the traffic reports at noon, it sounded really bad out there already.

Now for my guests. We brought our kids to see the lot where our house would be built on Thanksgiving, 1999. A rafter of turkeys came out and attacked the car. Well, 18 years later we've learned that we are guests in their territory. After I changed my cats to strictly indoors, I put up some bird feeders in back. We back up to open grassland and there is a creek at the bottom of our hill. Once the feeders went up, they started asking for their own feed and what do you know? I am owned by the turkeys. This is their land--they were here first.

Usually by now they have gone someplace else until late winter, but this year they are hanging around, although they come maybe 3x a week. Last year two hens brought a dozen chicks to dine, but not this year.

The crows own me. I swear the crows talk to me when I go out, and of course the turkeys have a lot to say. They leave when it starts to get dark.

Here are some shots looking out my bedroom sliding door today. I have photos of the chicks from last year, but will have to find them.
