Caro-Thanks! It only recently dawned on me, the money is already spent whether I wear a piece or let it just sit. And if if it is just sitting around unused, that's taking up space, which is clothing clutter. And the rest of my home is pretty clutter free (I only have a handful of statues/fake plants as decoration, I prefer more open spaces) so why should my wardrobe and closet be any different right?

Really interesting & such a great way to fine-tune your wardrobe :)
I love your statement: Sooner or later the item has to either be used, or purged, otherwise I'm just keeping clutter.

Mo-Yes! I think it will be easier for me to purge after I freshen up my fall/winter wardrobe come, maybe Sept or Oct. By then I'll have completed all 4 seasons with this challenge and I'll be able to see if an item will work with my new working closet. Right now, I can see a sweater in the boutique, didn't work with my current fall/winter bottoms, but may work well with a spring/summer bottom and earn it's place in my closet. Anything that cannot work with my finalized closet will have to go. This should really help my purging. And I know I'm not going to NOT want to shop for years and years while I slowly add items only from the boutique. Sooner or later the item has to either be used, or purged, otherwise I'm just keeping clutter.

That makes sense, Lisa. After a time living in FL away from my winter clothing, often when I come back it is a revelation. Some items I'm so happy to be reunited with and others just don't make the cut anymore after a year of being away. I put them on, and often purge them after their very first wear when it feels 'off'.

Suz-Yes! I am hoping for much smarter shopping in the future, and a more cohesive (and therefore makes me happier) closet as the final result. I'm amazed at how long I've kept up the challenge. At this point, DH says it's not a challenge anymore, it's become a lifestyle.

Angie-Yes! This has been a superb experience for me. I finally figured out how to manage my wardrobe, how I can maintain one in/one out, and I'll be able to spend my money much more wisely in the future.

Jeanie-I agree, I am also a big repeat outfit person. When I find a combination I adore, I just keep sporting it. I've noticed my wardrobe boredom is often because I'm not loving the outfit combination I have, which doesn't always mean I don't like the pieces themselves, I just didn't like them paired together.

Alexandra and Krista-Thanks for reading!

Mo-I am leaving the fall/winter section of the boutique alone for now. I have some pricey sweaters in there and I am not ready to part ways with them just yet. I think after I freshen up my fall/winter clothes at the start of the season this year, it will be time to purge that portion, after all, after a year of not wearing something, most items should be moved to new homes. That is not going to be an easy purge for me to do. I already plan to purge any unworn items from spring/summer come August. These pieces aren't as pricey (no cashmere or wool to purge) so it will be easier for me to do.

Well done! I can't believe it's been over 4 months now you've been plugging along. Awesome! Have you purged the fall/winter things you did not grab for, or are you leaving the boutique alone for the entire year before making changes?

I always enjoy reading your analyses about your wardrobe! I have been working on my 'meh' outfits too and I agree that there's much more satisfaction in finding the right combination rather than simply moving on to a new outfit.

I like the idea of spending time to rework outfits that didn't quite work. I find when I get a combination that works I tend to wear it over and over. If I spent more time reworking the so-so outfits I would have a lot more fall back outfits.

Hi,

I’ve just completed week 18 (4 1/2 months) on the challenge! Current wardrobe totals are near the end. I tried to underline some subtopics in case you have a specific one in mind.

To read more about the challenge, including the rules, click here.

For a recap of week 16, click here.

For a summary post of all the fall/winter recaps click here.

Reflections for Week 18

Combining Spring and Fall

At this point in the season, we are slowly shifting to spring weather. I consider my
fall/winter capsule complete and will not be making any changes to this portion
of my working closet until the fall season rolls around again. I do plan to try and incorporate as many of my fall pieces as possible into my spring/summer wardrobe. One of my personal goals is a small, four season wardrobe, which I think will work well for me, if my spring and fall pieces can be used for both seasons. I don’t expect every fall piece to work for spring, or vice versa, but if at
least some of these pieces did, that would be nice because then the pieces are
working more often. And usually our spring weather is very short and chilly, moving quickly from really cold to really warm days, and fall items are usually a little warmer than spring versions (long sleeves instead of ¾, knits without holes or sheer detailing).

More time fixing ‘meh’ outfits

Since I’m working with less clothes than what was in my entire wardrobe before the challenge, I’ve noticed that I am able to spend more time re-working outfits. If I sport a combination I don’t like, I have more incentive to remix the outfit until I
come up with a combination that makes me happy. Previously, I would sport an outfit I felt ‘meh’ about, and then search for a new outfit the next day, instead of spending the time working on ‘fixing’ the ‘meh’ outfit.

I’m a fan of bright colors, over spring colors

I’ve been spending quite a bit of time lately, looking at spring fashions. We have had an especially snowy, cold winter season this year and when I first saw the hints of spring clothes in stores, they seemed so refreshing compared to all the dark shades of fall/winter clothes. But now that the weather is shifting just a little, and I’m seeing more and more pastels and cropped trousers and dresses, I am realizing that most of these pieces just don’t really ‘sing’ to me. And I don’t mind sporting none spring colors, during spring. I’ve been reaching for the brightest pieces in my wardrobe (cobalt jeans, coral hoodie, Kelly green blazer, white lace sweater) to wake up my wardrobe. Apparently I’m not a big fan of most spring
colors on me, even if they are refreshing to look at after a winter season. This maybe why my spring wardrobe has always been so small, I’d rather sport a bold color or a stripe, instead of a pastel or a flower print.

I’ve added 7 items for spring/summer since the last check in.

Completing week 18, I had 14 items for spring/summer

3 bottoms (no change [cobalt, white, bf])

0 hoodies (no change)

6 toppers (this includes: pullover sweaters, blazers and cardigans; added one kelly green blazer, one printed bomber jacket, and one ¾ sleeve sweater]

0 knits (for layering; no change)

0 gear items (no change, not warm enough to add yet)

0 shirt (no change)

1 SS T’s (no change)

1 tank (added one tank, for layering now and stand alone with shorts later)

3 scarves (added two scarves)

0 workout outfits (top and bottom; no change, not warm enough to add yet)

And here is the current spring/summer closet, I’ll try to post outfits soon.

Thanks for reading!
