It seems like a lot of the items recommended on this forum that bring out the lemmings are just good basics, i.e. the Halogen pencil skirt, the Brooks Bros. button down, Sam Edelman booties, etc. They're not statement pieces, but building blocks which each person uses to create their own statement. Those don't bother me at all.

Copying color schemes and general silhouettes doesn't bother me...in fact, I think it's cool to see variations on a theme.

It would, however, be disconcerting to see someone wearing the exact same items head-to-toe.

I have to agree with a lot of posters above that it depends on the situation. Personally, I'd be thrilled if someone got outfit inspiration from me. But, if someone was constantly posting the exact same outfits I wore, like with your friend's workout buddy, that would be pretty creepy.

I think of YLF as a group of very inspirational ladies.
I love the idea of twinning, not as an exact replica, but as inspiration to style something a little differently, try something new or to even see someone wearing what you have already have, a kindred spirit.
I used to buy magazines for inspiration, not any more, real life inspiration is much better in my book

Truthfully I would be delighted to live close enough to try more things I see here. If someone close to me (physically) copied my every purchase I would be bothered, but I love YLF twinning!

I don't mind at all when it's individual pieces, like the VC skirt or the Spiegel jacket or whatever. And taking inspiration from another's outfit is fine too. I'd be flattered if someone was inspired by me. But if someone were to copy me by buying my entire exact outfit... Yeah, I'd find that creepy whether IRL or online to be honest.

Although I think my style would be pretty hard to copy exactly, so I'm not particularly worried about that happening.

I do think that distance plays a role here. Since being unique and creative is important to me, I get a little turned off if I see a million people IRL all wearing essentially the same outfit or item. (this happened today, actually. Apparently there is a uniform consisting of plaid shirt, skinny jeans, and tall cognac riding boots to go apple picking/wine tasting in in new England! I was wearing something different, thankyouverymuch.).

Luckily I don't know anybody IRL that dresses like me!

This is a good question. To be perfectly honest, my style world is all about what's on the internet. YLF, Pinterest, other blogs. I live in a poor, small town with no style to emulate or to be inspired by, that's why. Save for the cowboys and construction workers who've got something cool going on (unintentionally).

This means that if I see an item all over YLF I become saturated with it. I might like it a lot but if I see it frequently, the dopamine rush of "new" wears out and I lose interest in the item. For that matter, I lose interest in my own clothes easily as well. The item has to have some other redeeming aspects to make them trump "new" -- for example, if it is good quality, has good fit, or a nice color on me -- I don't get sick of it as easily. ETA - I have some outfit formulas and pieces like my Report Marks booties that are good examples. I've seen them on myself and other forum members and haven't tired yet because they function well and look so good.

I think this aspect of my personality/brain keeps me from twinning a lot, anywhere. It is closely associated with the part of the brain that enjoys the rush of shopping.

I love seeing the same item on a number of fabbers. I've learned a lot more from this, than seeing items on the typical model in an ad. And I find it really amazing when the exact same item looks wonderful on women of many different body types...thinking of the VC tube skirt for example.

A few years ago I realized that our next door neighbor was copying our front yard landscaping, item by item. If we put in a boxwood hedge, they did too, etc. At that time I was really into gardening, and put a lot of mental energy & creativity into our design. I tried to keep a sense of humor, but it was difficult.
Now they don't garden at all, so the problem is over thank goodness.

It's a good question. I think about this. I really don't care at all now, and even enjoy it. BUT my oldest, dearest friend hated - just hated - being copied. In high school, maybe because I took her word for it, I didn't like it either.

On the other hand, if someone did it all the time, I'd probably be annoyed at being shadowed like that. I'd want the person to get their own life.

I don't think of what happens here as copying, I think it's more like recommending. If I read a great book and told you about it and you read it, are you copying me? For me, some of what I like is to see something on a real person.
I think it's like a cover song, it's the same but each artist makes it there own.

I am not on Pininterest, and I really don't want to be :) I can see how that would be a huge time sink!

However, I am always very flattered if I ever inspire anyone. I think geography does have a big part in it. Much easier to wear the same sweater as another fabber on the same day when no one will see you

It really lets us leverage off of the wonderful finds of other fabbers without anyone knowing our little secret.

I am always so happy when other fabbers have wonderful finds, and I love Angie's roundups. I just don't have a lot of time to shop, and I don't like to shop, so I sort of feel like this has helped me a lot in finding quality pieces and putting together looks I would otherwise not have time to do.

Personally, I've assumed I'm an oddball - even as a pretween I loved being someone's twin. I happen to think it's neat (if you are excited/clubby about it, like Rachylou said was etiquette in a recent thread).

A friend of mine back in university went shopping with me a lot. We have very similar aesthetics (at the time, we were drawn to goth elements) and often, we would get 2-3 of the exact same clothing items. We never had a problem with each other in that sense due to our differing body types and slight changes to our aesthetics. She tended to be dressier and more glam whereas I was a bit more tough chic (not as much anymore though!). We would see each other in the same items but worn so differently.

My point is, copying or getting inspired by others can be a fun thing. I really like the way YLFers do it: get the same piece or style of clothing/accessory and wear it in their own way.

I love the way we copy here. Let me see, I have the Spiegel jacket, Halogen seamed pencil skirt, Brooks Bros shirt, and many others. I think one of the reasons the copy comfort level here is high is because we recommend items because of the fit. This goes back to the thread on YLF twins. But I do not remember anyone here wearing a complete copy of another's whole outfit. I also think if that happened here we would feel just as weird as if it happened in our non web life.

Fascinating discussion! I would indeed be a little "creeped out" if someone IRL were copycatting my outfits, although purchasing individual items wouldn't be a problem, particularly if involved a good friend. I purchased one of the dresses Kari posted last year and posted myself it in a very similar way. Now, I don't always wear that dress that way, and Kari and I are thousands of miles away, but I was in a sense saying "thanks for the inspiration." Other fabbers help me see all sorts of items already in my closet, or in the stores, with a different set of eyes. This is invaluable!

Now, since I am incapable of copying all of Kari's looks, or anyone else's, and have my own style to develop, I find my inspiration from many sources and most inspiration outfits have my own stamp on them.

A Picasso quote: "All artists copy. Good artists steal."

Hello all, I'm another new member who felt compelled to jump on this interesting topic.

I have two dear but distant friends with whom I share a strong aesthetic affinity and on those (sadly rare) occasions when we get together we're often delighted to discover that two or three of us have independently purchased the same shoes, dress, or even color of nail polish. We live on other sides of the country, and sometimes the world, from each other now, but we were similarly enthusiastic about our shared tastes when we also shared a zip code--we take it as further evidence of our kindred spirits. I see ylf members taking similar joy in sharing with and inspiring each other, and I think it's a beautiful aspect of this space.

Welcome, Shirley! :)

I am a gigantic copier, both from fellow YLFers and from Pinterest and other sources. I think our copycat culture here is a blast!

I must admit I copied a leopard-and-magenta look from a co-worker a week or so ago. But that was a one-off fun homage using different pieces in similar colors and prints. I think it would be a different story if (a) I did it regularly and (b) I started buying the exact same pieces. I think that would definitely be crossing a line.

Eventhough I would not mind it if someone buy and wear something I have, I probably won't do it unless it's a very close friend or relative. On the forum because of the distance and openness, it's actually celebrated. There is definitely difference.

This is a tricky one and I think if I was being copied to the last detail then I would be a little concerned. I like all the copying that goes on here on YLF as it so often is just one or two pieces and everyone adds their own interpretation of it.
I have to admit to feeling glad that as I can make my own clothes, time permitting, I always have totally unique items

I think geography helps, and also--sort of like IK's question and the alchemy question--the same things actually look different on different people in different sizes and shapes, and most of the time they are worn in a different combination. So it'd be more an issue with a unique graphic or print, or maybe color. I'd be more concerned about being myself sucked in to getting something and then finding out it's a real fad and it's everywhere I go. So far, that's not been a problem at all.

I also wonder, when buying something from AT or BR, will I see it on someone else in the hallway, since we don't have scads of large retailers here. Again, so far, either it's not a problem or I'm not seeing it. And, that's in the setting of "noticing" more than I used to. Most of the time, my items are, ahem, not so noticeable, but I've recently acquired a few that would be, so we'll see.

It's a good question. I almost never see anyone IRL wearing the same things as me. The only exception is when I teach and see a lot of students, sometimes (quite infrequently) I will see someone wearing a similar top from Banana Republic or GAP, and it does make me feel a bit self-conscious (not in a bad sort of way but in a "I hope we will not end up wearing this on the same day" kind of way).

It feels like copying an element of an outfit worn by a person located far, far away is not the same as showing up at work wearing the same exact shoes or sweater as a co-worker, and doing so day after day.

To me, copying items other YLFabbers found is like following Consumer Reports recommendations - it makes it easier to hone in on items that have good quality and style, and seem to fit a variety of body types. I also find that when many forum members have the same item, I can find useful discussions of fit, sizing, and styling issues.

I think this has everything to do with degree of copying. An item here or an item there isn't the same as trying to emulate every last thing about a person.
I love the twin items here, by the way.

I had to ask some to stop copying me IRL as it was freaking me out a little. Right down to the same hair colour. I didn't feel it was in a sharing, fun kind of way. I do like to do some copycatting of my own, however I like to do my own version of a copycat, as do the YLF ladies.

I would find it flattering if someone was interested in copying or twinning something of mine. I rarely see full outfits being copied but rather elements of an outfit being used in a new and unique way. I think that is the beauty of YLF. The members have the courage to take a few risks and borrow elements of a style that is not their usual. I also find it very interesting to see how a piece that many have is styled in so many ways. I am thinking of the halogen raisin skirt where a thread was created just to show off the varying looks.

I admired a co-worker's shoes a few weeks ago and asked her about sizing. She brought the shoes to my office with a pair of socks so I could try them on. When I said I loved them but the only color I could find was the same as hers so I wasn't going to get them, she said she didn't mind at all. I went with another style that was similar and she loved them and I encouraged her to get a pair. We have similar style sense but I don't care if we have a few items the same.

This is a great question and I'm afraid I'm too tired tonight to respond with any real intelligence:) but I do have to admit that I felt a little bit special knowing I share the Spiegel jacket with so many fab and stylish ladies.

My sister told her flatmate about a handbag in a particular shade and style she wanted. Then when it went on sale, her flatmate bought it. She wouldn't have thought of it if my sister hadn't raved about it (she plays it safe until someone else likes something, then acts as if she thought of it herself). My sister then felt she couldn't buy the bag :(

I think it's a bit different here though.

I love twinning (she said, as she rushed out to order that houndstooth belt...thank you for the link, by the way. I haven't actually ordered yet but I will put it in my cart for consideration!)

I also love your question. You always start interesting threads.

I think it's true the distance helps. But even if I lived in the same town with a Fabber (and I do!) and we had some of the same items (and we do!) I'd think it was fun if we both showed up in the same outfit. It's because of the climate here -- non-competitive -- and because we share the fun of the hunt and the fab find.

I love it. It is somehow comforting and consoling that there is always a place for inspiration based on reality.
