Ornella, Mander, RachyLou, Astrid and Lyn - I totally agree with you all about expensive clothing for babies and littlies! My kids get dressed in very no name stuff and always have. Woolworths is about the fanciest my kids ever get, except that they have a doting aunt who lives in the UK and she loves to buy the kids, especially the girls, fancy expensive clothes. When they get those, well I let them wear it all till they're well and truly used, I don't really see the point in saving the nice stuff because they grow so fast!

Having said that though, the whimsical, clothing loving me just loved the idea that this little girl's first outfit included Dior! This little onsie was absolutely beautifully made. It felt so soft and lovely and I loved the simplicity.

Columbine, Claire & Alicat - the baby was born partially covered in the amniotic membrane. It is very rare and surrounded by all sorts of myth and superstition - all good stuff though. I felt very privileged to have seen it!

I agree with you 100%, Ornella. That was my first reaction too. But I have to say (@Rachylou) Steiff Teddy bears are worth the money. I got one myself from my godmother to my first birthday and I adored it and it's still in a condition where it could be passed on to the next generation. My sister's and brothers' stuffed animals were from different brands and are practically destroyed.

But generally I agree that no name or second hand is totally fine, it makes more sense to me.

We had the debate about designer duds amongst the residents too - one of the moms was shocked that her colleague let their baby dress is *gasp* SECOND HAND CLOTHES. BECAUSE THEY HAD GERMS. (This coming from a doctor, mind you) Also, designer mom couldn't imagine all the pics of her child on Facebook in anything less than Burberry. Or maybe the Gap. Maybe.

I dunno, guess it's just different values in parenting. I wouldn't do it myself - maybe one or two nice outfits, and the rest of the time, I believe in play clothes. Kids should be able to run around and not worry about ripping their Burberry shorts ;p

I don't honestly see it, either, Ornella. What's that Master Card commercial:

Steiff Teddy bear... $$$$
Silver rattle... $$$$
Watching her play with the box it all came in instead... Priceless!!!

On the other hand, when you need to give a certain kind of token gift to the parents, I suppose designer baby duds come in handy.

It's a cute piece of clothing. I love the collar.

I also don't want to spoil the party, but the question is out so here's my 2 pence worth... I have trouble seing the real 'value' in designer clothes for the newborns. Children even. Practical me sees just lots of money that could have been directed towards the baby's future funds. The little ones wee, poo and puke on the clothes, and have no clue what's adorning that clothes... and grow out of it in no time. The older ones play in the mud and sand, and get messy when eating. I have disposed of many a pieces with unwashable stains and don't have a single regret.

Emotional me thinks babies and children are beautiful and can't possibly need anything for that beauty to shine.

I have actually seen a whole department in one Parisian department store of the Dior baby clothing and was not impressed. I can't see the point, other than people getting a kick for being te ones with 'taste' and gifting such things.

Of course, each to his own but this is my view.

I would find it a bit baffling to have a whole wardrobe of designer clothes for an infant, just because you have to change them so often, but I think it's cute for special occasions. And what better special occasion than your first ever outfit?

It's also not OTT logos everywhere, which is good.

Oh, now that is a wonderfully old fashioned onesie. I'd go for that too. Except I'd put it on a boy, because that's really old fashioned.

It's good I have no boys. I'd be dressing them up in t-straps and knee pants and they'd get jumped on the playground.

I think you should charge extra for being the baby's personal stylist. Just kidding! That's such a simple, beautiful garment. I had to look up "caul". Does it mean the baby was still in the amniotic sack or just wearing part of it on the head?

Yesterday morning I attended the birth of a gorgeous baby girl. Such an amazing birth - baby was born in the caul which was a first for me.

I was looking through the clothes packed for baby to find something to dress her in after she had been skin to skin with mom and I found this little body suit. I figured if a baby's first outfit included Dior, she was off to a great start, so I laid it out. The mom told me later that it was a gift from a family member.
