I think I've officially decided against the dress, even though it sounds like a lovely piece. Basically it won't fulfill the wardrobe function that I want from this purchase. I want a versatile sheath that I can style any number of ways, i.e. with layers either on top or underneath, with necklaces or scarves, jackets or cardigans etc. It sounds like the neckline on this dresss precludes the possibility of necklaces or scarves, and the higher neckline still gives me pause if I can't break out those elongating accessories.
I'm astonished that Nordy's doesn't appear to have *any* non-cocktail sheaths in my size lately! I'm ok with something on the dressier side, but a full-blown cocktail dress will not suit my purposes.

Michelle - I really like that dress in Jam for you. I think the studded detail will do the job that a statement necklace would. It will draw the eye up to your face If the shaping of the dress follows your shape well enough that there are no baggy or snug zones, I bet you will feel marvelous in it and find quite a few ways to change it up, even with a scarf large enough to cover most of the studs!

marianna, count me in too, if they have lots to spare!!

i really like the dress in purple for you. it's a very dark purple and i see it as neutral particularly when mixed with some of your colored pieces.

agree with others re black peacock scarf--really is teal and would fab on your color.

Marianna, I am 100% taking you up on that offer!!!!! If you can find one of those in the white, I'll be the happiest person ever!
Maya: Joy echoes you on the black peacock scarf, so who am I to go against you both. :)
I'm thinking I may have to pass on the purple dress, just because I really am looking for a sheath that's more versatile (can be layered under or over, preferrably v-neck etc). Perhaps I should hold out? It's a shame, though, because I love the sound of it so much!

The dress Marianna found is lovely. Very flattering on the model. How do you feel about the embellished neckline though? Would you mind not wearing necklaces or scarves with it? My LBD is VERY basic. It is a sleeveless black dress and nothing more or less. No embellishment. No frou frou. I can get at least 25 looks out of it though, which is why it is so fab. That said, I wouldn't blame you for getting this one. It's pretty.

The dolman sleeve top is the same one, I think. I don't think you would love it, though, because I know you are not comfortable leaving your waist undefined. I'd pass.

The peacock scarf is the one I posted a while back (not that I expect you to keep up with everything I post). I like the black for you and hear me out before you raise eyebrows at me: It says "black" but it's actually teal. Don't ask me why. Just trust me...it's not black!

I also love the green one. It's a lovely jade green with purple peacock feathers. Just gorgeous. It's not your typical jewel tone...but I still think it would be pretty on you.

Marianna, is that offer open to the public? :)

p.s. Michelle, you are not absurdly busty--take it from someone who is!

Thank you, Joy, that's marvellously helpful.
I am leaning towards the blue for the peacock scarf, if I go that route. It wouldn't be for my red coat so much as my black puffer/general layering.
ETA: Just saw your other post, Joy, and the black is back in contention. :)

Steph: your excellent description zeroed in on another concern I have re. the dolman sweater. It mentions a dropped waist, and that can go horribly wrong on me. Looks like I'll be passing on this one, though if I did buy it would definitely be in the black (bronze olive sounds like a bad idea on me for so many reasons).

Michelle, besides the black, the purple and the spice don't seem to have brown in them. The purple is a fushia background with dark purple lines and rings with a turquoise eye with a center that could be soft black, dark purple or a chocolate brown. Even with the enlarge feature I'm not sure of that color. There's also a small touch of a light tone that looks most like a light grey to me.
The spice version is a background of a muted coral and has lots of teal and cobalt blue in the lines. The eye's look like olive with a soft black center.
Maybe someone who has seen or owns these scarves can be more specific about the colors in real life. If you want to avoid brown and wear this with your black coat, I'd choose the black. It has lots of teal blue plus red in the over-all look.
Edit: I agree with Steph that the brown in the blue scarf is not very noticable. It's a beautiful scarf!

Michelle, the brown in the blue scarf is in no way a focal point, and blends in with the pattern. I don't think you should be concerned about that. All of the scarves have some brown in them, except possibly the purple. It's difficult to tell if there might be some brown in the peacock eye on the purple scarf, but I don't think there is. The purple is a bright purple of medium depth. I wouldn't say it is deep enough to qualify as your typical jewel tone, but I think it would look nice with red. When I looked at the scarves, I liked purple best for me, but immediately thought of the blue for you.

As for your other question, first off, I wouldn't call you absurdly busty (from one busty gal to another). I think that you should still try the dress. I have several dresses with that type of neckline and I actually find them flattering, despite the general rule that busty women shouldn't wear high necklines. You would definitely be able to layer over it. I generally don't layer under dresses, so I'm not sure if the neckline would impede that. I think it's worth a try.

Regarding the dolman sleeve sweater, I actually think it's not very flattering on the model in the photo, who is also busty, but not because of the bust line. It doesn't seem to taper at all near the waist, and I think it makes her look a bit dumpy as a result. I think that if you get it, you can work with the neckline so that it doesn't appear so busty, but I worry about the cut of it in general. Also, were you planning on going for the black with this one? I don't think I have ever seen you in a color like the mustard/gold option--it seems a little warmer/earthier than your usual jewel tones?

I added to my post but I'll go back and look. In the pictures the brown doesn't stand out so much as it is shading. The black doesn't really have brown. The bit of tan is more golden next to the other colors.

Joy, that's super helpful, thank you. Do any of the scarves manage to omit brown, or does it figure into all the prints? Is there one scarf that looks nicer than the rest?

Michelle, the blue peacock scarf has a cobalt background. The feather design is lines in black and brown, but subtle. The other color that stands out is fushia that forms the eyes of the feathers with a little bit of yellow-orange type gold in the very center.
If you want to know, the green someone suggested is a medium toned bluish green with olive/brown feather lines and eyes of 2 shades of purple ringed by a bit of tan.
The black version is shown with a charcoal sweater. The background is black, but the feather lines are teal and maybe cobalt blues. The eyes have a deep rusty red center surrounded by a lighter rust, then a soft yellow ring and lighter shades of teal/turquoise. This scarf has lots of blue in it, but it's more teal than cobalt. I like the blue or black best for you.
I don't feel qualified to comment on the necklines for you. Neither is really high. The dress would not easily allow layering under it, if that is what you are looking for.

Great descriptions, everyone!! Thank you!
Quick question about the peacock scarf in blue: what colour is the background, and what colours appear in the print?

Now I want to bounce thoughts off people:
Since I'm so absurdly busty, do you think I should give the dress and the dolman sweater a miss? I worry that the relatively high neck of the dress will limit under-layering possibilities and the relatively high positioning may not be as flattering as, say, a low-scoop or a v-neck. As for boat-necks, that probably wouldn't do me any favours, right?

Oh, good, I see someone with better style vocab has stepped in :-)

I had a Tissue Weight thought: I was at Nordies looking at scarves and mentioned to SA that I will probably a return a NAS scarf I am afraid to wear (Whisper cashmere - too fragile I'm sure). The SA pointed me to the Tissue Weight and recommended them (for MN weather too!). She showed how they work well for inside wear too. They ARE big, but not thick or bulky. When I got home I saw these on sale

I'll try the dress: the heather IS a charcoal grey. If the pic is correct, it is medium dark. The Jam is a darker purple color. One pic has it a purple with a hint of red, the other not so much, but overall it presents darker than the heather. The studs at the jewel neck appear to be pewter tone. They form a double layer of trim right along the neckline - sort of like a necklace, then in middle front they form two medallions. The top one interrupts the lower trim layer. The bottom medallion is connected to the top one - a sort of figure 8. They are very nicely done. . .

Yes, sleeveless. Yes a-line, but very slightly. It also may be sort of sheath-like in shaping, but not very form fitting.

Hi Michelle!

Dress
1. The two shades are charcoal heather (a medium to dark gray, with slight heathering) and jam (maroon + eggplant purple = "jam"). I prefer the jam shade for you. The heathering on the charcoal is hitting me the wrong way. Too casual?
2. The neckline is a slight scoop. So a more relaxed crew neck. Not too low, but not hugging the neck either. The embellishment is pretty, and follows the neckline, and dips to a pendant shape at the center. Maybe just a few inches long.
3. It is sleeveless. The other photo attached to this page shows a model wearing tights, booties, and a leather jacket with the dress. Stunning!
4. It's definitely a-line, but not grossly so.

Scarf
1. The winter white would be lovely with your bright colors!
2. Peacock print. I love the blue shade because I love you in cobalt blue. All the colors are pretty though. The scarf is a solid color with magnified peacock print on it. So not a heavy print. It's large, but not so full. Very tasteful and chic.

Dolman sweater
This is the one Angie has in the store. I want it too! Lovely, lovely. It is indeed boatneck, but again, the neckline doesn't dip low at all. Sits above the collar bones.

I don't think I've ever described anything for you before, but I'll take a stab at it....

1) The heather grey is a charcoal grey...and it looks great. The Jam is a deep, dark aubergine shade of purple. I think that the purple would look divine on you.

2) The neckline is a high round neck...think an inch or two below the collar bone as the lowest point. Its outlined in round metallic (gunmetal color maybe?) studs, with further studs hand down in the center. Think of a bib necklace that tapers down in the center (maybe 3 inches- Marianna could probably tell you more accurately). Its very pretty in an understated way...

3) Sleeveless and subtly A-line...

I have major lust or that cashmere wrap now. Thanks Michelle...the peacock scarf is random sprays of peacock feathers. The 'eyes' on the feathers are predominantly shades of blues, purple, browns, and black on colored backgrounds. If you're planning to pair it with your red coat, I'd pick the green or the blue. I don't remember how long this scarf drapes when worn around the neck, but for sure its not as long as the cashmere wrap...

Looks like the sweater is the same as the one in the store...and the boat neck is high- from right below your collar bone, and ends where your collarbone would meet your shoulder.

Hope it helps...

I have the tissue weight scarf in a dark purple. It's quite nice, soft and thin. I've only worn it as a shawl to the opera over a sheath dress. I was still a bit cold, but I run cold.
Don't have time to comment on your other items. I'll try and come back later, though I'm sure one of the other lovely ladies here will help you out.

I was talking to Marianna about how I really wanted to find a sleeveless sheath-type dress for everything from business-type settings to fun layering possibilities. She suggested this one that she's seen at the Nordy's where she works:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/31.....ltback=879

It sounds lovely! I just have a few questions, and I can't ask her because she's working. :)
1. Could someone please describe the two shades available? Is the dark heather like a charcoal grey? And how about the purple shade...is it pretty? Bright? Muted? Dark? Pale?
2. What is the neckline shape on this dress? And how has the embellishment been executed?
3. It's sleeveless, right?
4. Is it *very* a-line or only slightly so?

Other items I'm considering:
Nordstrom cashmere scarf in winter white (to go with my red coat):
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/28.....ltback=287
If it were cheaper I'd totally stock up in a pretty coloured one for my black puffer, but alas....

That said, maybe this scarf would do the trick? Could someone please tell me what the pattern is like and recommend the best colour for me?
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/31.....ltback=337

Is this dolman sleeve sweater the same one as Angie has in the store? It's the same brand, but I fear the style may be different:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/31.....ltback=496
ETA: oh, boatneck? Is it super-high?

And Angie's super-long pearl strand, probably in white:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/29.....dXnG03c.Ow

I'm sad because I wanted to get some of the Caslon tees, but they don't have any left in black or white (which would be key for layering. May still get one in Cabernet.

Thank you ladies!
