Speaking for myself alone, you ladies have got me all sorted out now. Thanks for the great descriptions. I can even picture how this would work now, and I'm keen to give it a go! I'd love to wear a tgreater variety of tops with, say, my high-waisted culottes. Now I suspect I can. Thank you!

1.) I don't think it calls for a specific hemline just one with sufficient volume. Diane was wearing a basic graphic tee, I believe, and Angie's other examples were drapey tees as well.

2.) it should fall off to the side, like on one hip. It's not really a knot either, you take a bunch of fabric and tie an elastic around it, then you've got a little shirt pony tail...you tuck that under so the elastic and tail are not visible and creates the asymmetric drape and reigns in some of the volume.

I don't know if I've helped or made things more confusing!! Hopefully others will chime in with better descriptions.

Oh and I forgot to answer your question about the top fit. Mine was a loose-ish, lower hip length and was a jersey fabric so had a little stretch. I do think it suits a fabric with a little give. The knot falls about a quarter to a third around from one side, So off centre is best.

Michelle, the top doesn't need to have a specific hemline, it just needs to be longish. You put the elastic on a clump of fabric at about the hip bone. Then you simply flip the elastic and the "end" you have created up and underneath. So all that is visible from the outside is the tee shirt fabric gathering into something. Then you'd make sure the fabric on the other side of your body is just hanging down, to give it the asymmetrical look. Hope this helps!

Michelle, I just popped a reply on the main blog post about two replies under yours. I wrote a description for you :)

copied and pasted here for you:

I had a quick check of my post Michelle, but I didn’t really describe it fully. Apologies for that. Here’s what you do.
About a quarter of the way around the front lower edge, grab a small handful of fabric with a pulling down motion. Wrap an elastic band around about a hand span away from the end bit of fabric. It creates a small pony tail effect and pulls the fabric together. Tuck this tail under and then the resulting effect is a drape from the sides up in to a point on one side of the top. The drape lines swoop up from both sides creating a bit of asymmetry.
Hope this is detailed enough for you Michelle.

I decided to start a forum thread rather than hijacking the comments on the blog post. :)
I'd really appreciate some verbal guidance on how to accomplish Diane's very cool-sounding knot trick. Diane, I saw your comment in the thread, and thank you very much for the quick response! I'm still a little confused, though, on a number of points.
1. Does the top need to have a specific sort of hemline in order for this to work?
2. I'm still not really clear on how to do the knot. Where is it supposed to fall on the body? How do you each go about tying it? Is the elastic visible or hidden once it's done?

Thanks for your patience, guys. :)
