Thanks, Julie! Sorry that I missed this thread Michelle.

I think that you should consider getting a long strand of white pearl beads and doubling them up over your neck - in either a neat or messy way. That way you have more versatility. Also, you are such a pearl girl, that it will automatically become a signature piece.

Let me know if I can help further.

Actually Michelle, the length that you propose would look really good layered with your existing necklace.

I'm bumping the thread for Angie.

Carole - suddenly I think my life couldn't be complete without a 65-inch long pearl necklace. Love that!

I'm not familiar with the pearls in the movie, but I recently received an extra long strand for Christmas that can be worn lots of different ways. It also came with a silver clasp type ring to use on either side to secure the strand when doubling or tripling up to make it shorter. I found this link googling http://www.karipearls.com/rope-pearl-necklace.html because I wasn't sure of how to wear this longer strand. This has pictures showing all sorts of variations, so that you can adjust and compliment to suit your outfit. Mine is long enough to knot it at or above the bust, or wrap around your neck like a scarf slipping one end into the other in front, if that makes sense. Just as RoseandJoan said, a longer strand would give you more options, and would be very flattering for you.

I would be inclined to go longer Michelle, this would create a very flattering effect when worn over a higher necked top. You would also have the option of wrapping the pearls to create a two strand effect, this is achieved by simply crossing the pearls in the middle for an even effect or closer to your body for a choker plus long necklace look. Does that make sense Michelle? Of course if you are looking at fresh water pearls the expense is a very real consideration.

Julie, thank you. If I wanted to shorten the length of the necklace somewhat to just above my overly-ample bust, do you think it would still be effective?

Michelle, if I'm thinking of the right look, pink dress, studded belt plus pearl necklace combo, I doubt you would have to go to the trouble of having the necklace made.

This is a simple string of cream pearls about 1cm in diameter and hitting about two inches below the bust.

If others concur this is the look I have attached an image for you to take along to a jewellers for pricing.

I recall there was much buzz about the long pearl necklace that Carrie sported throughout the SITC movie. I recently discovered a great little jewelry store around the corner from my place that would make me a necklace out of shell pearls. I've been wanting a new pearl necklace for awhile, since I'm obsessed with my short chunky strand but want some variety (sorry if I'm channeling you, Angie). Could you kindly describe Carrie's necklace and advise me whether that's the sort of thing I should get as my next pearl piece? How long is it, i.e. where does it hit on her body? Are the pearls chunky or more dainty? Some descriptions of how it was styled would be great, too.

FYI, I intend to buy myself a layered pearl necklace as my 50 pound reward. I have four weddings to attend this summer, so I know it will be practical as well as a worthwhile treat.
