I usually wear a dress in natural materials and a pair of flats also in natural materials. I am slightly paranoid of my plane catching fire and my clothes melting (I realize this is an unrealistic fear) - so that's the reason for my choices.

I also bring a thicker cardigan or jacket (without metal) with me so I can go without bra for security if I have to - so sick of my underwire setting off the machine!! :p

I like to wear a dress - one of those comfy, casual ones, relatively wrinkle-free of course. It lets me layer.

If in summer, I'll wear a sleeveless denim dress, for example, and layer a tee or a tank underneath; then a cardi or a light jacket on top. All things I can remove if it's too hot (in the washroom of course). I bring a pair of thin leggings in my purse - or wear them - to be put on if AC is too cold. I always carry a pair of socks, as I remove my shoes in flight, and find it is easier to sleep if all parts of my body are warm.

A pashmina-type scarf is also a good idea as it can double as a mini cover or even rolled into a pillow!

In winter, I'll wear a wool dress with basically the same elements (thicker leggings, turtleneck instead of a tank...).

I find a dress to be easier and less restrictive than pants.

If all that sitting leaves me bloated, I am less self-conscious in a dress arriving at the other end.

If something spills, it is easier to quickly rinse the stain in the washroom and have it dry than if it would be on close-to-skin pants.

I also try to wear my bulkiest shoes, but not if it means wearing my trainers with a dress.

I avoid earrings, as they make it less comfortable to sleep or can get caught in the above mentioned pashmina.

It depends on how hot you run. For most places, i would say yes. Also depends on where you stand onthe leggings-as-pants debate.

Diane...coming back after reading your destination. How about a stretchy tank dress over leggings, add a light sweater in the appropriate proportions to the dress, then the denim jacket. Everything but the dress can be stripped off just before landing or in the airport bathroom.

I remember being really really hot with a pair if jeans and a top while waiting for a taxi in crete. Sweltering, really.

Pack sunscreen and a hat within easy reach.

Late here but I have found this formula works for me. Black "Minnie pants" from J Crew. Soft ballet flat or ankle boot depending on weather (peds in ballets for security). Bottom layer for destination, drapery cardigan and leather jacket. Always a cashmere scarf/wrap. Easy on off jewelry. Good sunnies!

The leather jacket can be worn comfortably on plane if frigid and rolls into pillow if necessary. Wipes off if spilled on. In summer I would swap for utility jacket or blazer.

I check bag and go minimal carry on.

No fall back outfit here. I end up wearing whatever I end up picking last minute, which is usually whatever I want to bring but I did not have a chance to pack. I just mind my shoes and hardware. I pick shoes that are easy to take off and stay clear of stuff with lots of hardware. I don't run cold. Have a safe trip!

Well, what can I say? so much wisdom from all you lovely ladies; thank you so much.
This year on our flight we are taking two cases, for two adults and a nine year old. We will also take 3 small bags onto the plane. But this time we have a much stricter limit, otherwise we have to pay a surcharge. So with that in mind and after reading all the replies I think this will be my outfit:
A layering tee, possibly long sleeved.
My new coral open work sweater
Denim jacket
wide cotton scarf
Stretch pants.. I may buy some new ones next week.
New mint cons; and some socks.

My coral sweater and the scarf will then be used for added warmth in Greece when the temps drop a bit at night, I can also use my denim jacket and then I won't need to pack as many cardis.
I think I will also try to get hold of some mini plastic containers to decant hair lotion, conditioner, face creams etc. and this too will cut down on weight.
I'm also cutting down on how many pairs of shoes I'm taking.... how will I manage ;)

Diane I am not a regular traveller, but on my most recent trip to Thailand I layered. I wore skinny jeans, sleeveless top and long drapey cardigan. Also a scarf and warm footwear (booties I think). When we arrived I was able to remove the cardi, scarf and booties (swapped for sandals) and that worked quite well. And I was very comfortable on the I think 11 hour flight, the unexpected sleep over in Singapore Airport (don't ask) and the subsequent connecting flight to Phuket:)

The topic seems to have been well covered but will throw in my 2c worth. Mostly I fly from cold to warm/hot, so layers is the way to go. I always wear a pair of Royal Robbins Cardiff Stretch Travel pants, lightweight, comfy, great for travel in general as they can be washed in a sink and dry overnight. If going hiking I wear my boots on the plane, if not, usually the only shoes I take are a pair of thongs and on the plane I wear a pair or lightweight Arcopedico shoes, Mary Jane style (if I have extra room I might throw in a pair of flat sandals). Tops are layered with SS T, LS T, then a jersey cardi/jacket that I can wear at my destination if the evenings are cold, plus a scarf/pashmina.

A year or so ago I made DH and me "Flight tray bags". These are carried on the plane in my tote and then we take these out to put in the pocket or attach to the back of the tray table. They hold all our entertainment requirements for the flight eg. kindles, Sudoku books, pens/pencils/rubber, calculator, magazine, glasses etc. This way we only have ONE item each to remember to put back in the tote, but we have a variety of things to do without having to dig into the tote bag all the time.

As a carry on only advocate I have also streamlined cosmetics etc. So if you are thinking of doing the same, these are some of the things I do. Make sure you maximise your "medical" items as these are not counted in your liquids restriction. Eg. I usually take a painkiller gel/cream for neck/back problems etc. I usually just buy something over the counter but I'm planning on getting the doctor to write me a script so that I can take it as medical along with my contact lens gear. Take as much solid stuff as possible, eg solid deodorant. I haven't as yet tried solid bars of shampoo or conditioner as we usually take a small sample bottle with us and then buy something when we arrive. I only take mineral foundation (powder form) and take minimal makeup anyway as I often wear less in hot humid climates.

Have fun on your holiday.

Late and with not much new to add :-)

I too wear jeans and my bulkiest presentable shoes (won't wear Keens on the plane even if they take up a lot of room). I wear a tee and a jacket, leather in the winter and perhaps denim in the summer. Merino/silk blend thick socks packed in my tote. My cashmere shawl can be a scarf if I need a bit of warmth, can be a lap robe, can wrap around my shoulders. On my last trip it even kept my seatmate warm. She was practically whimpering with cold and I was fine in my jacket.

If I arrive in a hot place, it's easy to stuff my scarf and denim jacket in my tote. If I arrive in a cold place, I do what Angie does and add gloves and a hat packed somewhere reachable--my cashmere scarf is already around my neck, and boots already on my feet.

I love packing and planning! I hope you're having fun with yours.

I dress for comfort and my destination. If it's an overnight flight to Paris or London, my uniform is much like Angie's: straight-legged jeans with some stretch, a T/camisole with a light jumper, a jacket or raincoat, low-heeled boots or shoes, and a scarf. I like to wear something that feels comfortable enough to sleep in during the flight, but still looks presentable when I'm on the ground the next day, especially if I won't be heading straight to a the hotel. I find it easier to cope with jet lag if I stay active until 8 or 9 pm in my new time zone.

A couple of tips:

Because I hate walking around a grubby airport in my socks, I slip on a pair of foldable, ballerina-style slippers just before security and carry my boots through. I also remove any jewelry or metal items before the line-up so I can go through the scanners without problems.

I travel with only two items in my hands--my small carry-on and my Longchamp Le Pliage tote. I find this more efficient for going through security and for navigating unfamiliar airports, and local transit, on my arrival.

My cross-body travel handbag contains my passport, money, and credit card and it is tucked into my Longchamp tote during the plane trip. The tote also contains my scarf, iPad, headset, snacks, folding umbrella, and jacket/raincoat (folded in a large ziplock). On an overnight flight, I also throw in a pair of my husband's old socks to wear over my regular socks so I can walk around the plane without my shoes, a baby-sized pillowcase that I can stuff with my jacket or sweater, and a mini toiletry kit so I can freshen up before landing. The tote sits under the seat in front of me so I can get at everything easily without having to access my carry on during the flight. Having only two items means I don't have to worry about leaving something behind and I can easily move around when I arrive. If I know I can't check in to my room for a few hours, I can stop in a cafe for a quick lunch or a drink with just these two items.

Contrary to some of the others, I find that airplanes temps can range from boiling hot to freezing, so I always dress in layers. If the plane is overly warm, I can strip down to my T-shirt; if it's freezing, I wear my sweater, scarf, and even my jacket.

My travel "uniform" also works if I'm going from a cold climate to a warmer one. Depending on where I'm going, I can quickly change my shoes for sandals, or my jeans for a skirt, once I've arrived. In this case, I'd probably just make sure that the items I want are right at the top of my carry-on so I can find them quickly. My Longchamp tote becomes my shopping tote at my destination since I usually use my cross-body handbag at my destination. I do remove my passport, credit cards, and ID from my handbag, though, and put them into a waistband pouch that I wear under my clothes for the duration of my trip. I've seen handbags grabbed from unsuspecting travellers so I'm quite cautious about what I keep in my handbag.
Thanks RA, thanks Bagaline. Bra's, yes good idea, I have often been uncomfortable in tight ones. I'l dig out an old loose one to wear as I was uncomfortable last time I flew. I'm also thinking, as you have all mentioned them, that I should take thick socks along too as I am fed up with getting cold feet on flights.

I wouldn't know about boots, coats and the like because I NEVER travel to cold destinations. I'm French-Canadian and I've seen enough snow for the rest of my life ! Now that I live in Ireland, I get dampness and cold aplenty. So I always travel to warm/hot places and I visit my family in Quebec in late June or early September.

I have 2 flight "looks" that I alternate:
1) Cotton leggings, jersey tunic with 3/4 or long sleeves, cardigan and ballet flats.
2) Chinos with a bit of elastic in the waist, t-shirt with 3/4 or long sleeves, cardigan, loafers.
According to the weather here the day I leave (Cork in the morning, even in the summer, can be quite nippy!), the cardigan will be thin or heavy.
Also in my flight bag:
- a scarf/pashmina : super to wrap around you for a snooze and usefull for any cool nights at your destination;
- a pair of thick socks so I can remove my shoes and have warm tootsies in the plane;
- an inflatable pillow (I find the other styles too bulky).

Over more than 40 years of travel (2 or 3 times a year), I have worn almost everything on flights and/or trains, from jeans to dresses, yoga pants to long skirts, no pyjamas (thank God!) but the main lesson I have learned is to wear a comfortable bra. Even if all the rest of your attire is comfortable, a bra band even a small bit too tight or wires that poke will make you miserable. For the sake of comfort on a long flight, I wear a non-wired bra even if I hate the uniboob look: that's a compromise which is really worth it.

If I'm not wearing my Scotte travel jacket with 22 pockets, I have a tiny purse on a string that they don't make me put away with lip balm, mp3 and earbuds, my wallet. That way if the turbulence is bad after take-off and I can't get into my bag, I have the essentials. I once read about thieves stealing wallets from carryon luggage in the overhead bins while people slept on long-distance hauls, so I always keep it and my passport on my person now.
Lol Angie!. I was so cold on one flight that I was on the verge of going to give the Captain a piece of my mind. I'm not taking any chances this time. Lots of layers I think. And definitely trousers of some sort. WHY do they make it so cold??

for me it has to be slouchy pants of some sort because for whatever reason my crotch does not like long flights. tank plus blazer on top. shawl in bag. comfy flat shoes in handbag. smart shoes before boarding.lots of water while on flight.front closure bra so I can unhook while under a shawl in order to sleep.

It depends entirely on the length of the flight. If it's a short flight to a business meeting, I wear business casual.

But if it's a LOOOOOOONG flight:

straight leg jeans

short boots with thick socks

loose shirt or jumper with camisole

jacket - woven or knitted

scarf

It doesn't matter where I am heading to - it's ALWAYS freezing on the flight. I just peel off in the taxi - which is usually air conditioned anyway - if we are arriving at a hot destination. And grab my coat, gloves and hat if we are arriving in very cold weather.

I never wear leggings, shoes without socks, or a dress for a long flight. I am always wrapped up!
Thank you Parsley, Rachy, ABC and Isabel. I hear you on the footwear. I thought I might wear my new cons. They are a little bulky so wearing would cut down on weight in the case and I can wear them for coastal walks when I'm away.
Our flight will be nearly 4 hours and as we get up really early, I always doze on the plane and end up with a stiff neck, so maybe I could get a blowup travel pillow. When my head falls back when I'm asleep I end up with my mouth hanging open! Not a pretty sight :P
I also get really cranky with the cold AC so this year I am definitely wearing a scarf... maybe it could double up as a shawl for chilly evenings... ABC, I will definitely take pics to show in a post when I get back. I might share my travel capsule before I go... once I've sorted it out.

I like ponte pants. I always wear some type of blazer and a large scarf to use as a wrap. I wear ballet shoes if I am going somewhere warm or comfy boots if somewhere cooler.

As a frequent flyer I was going to chime in but it looks like the ladies of YLF have you covered! Suz's advice is spot on - and I do what missvie does with her shoes (wear my biggest/clunkiest pair to leave space in my carryon for other things).

I don't know how long your flight is from the UK to Greece, and this is not really advice regarding what to wear, but after nearly 15 years of business travel I FINALLY got around to getting one of those travel pillows. I always scoffed at people carrying them around, they are bulky and quite frankly kind of ugly (I wonder about the germs?!) - but...on a recent overnight flight, I used one for the first time and I felt about as good as one can after flying 8 hours in coach class overnight. My neck did not hurt - at. all. So now I have become one of the pillow carriers (at least for long flights)! FWIW I did find mine, a Sharper Image memory foam version with a zipoff cover, at TJMaxx for $10.

If you can while you are in Greece please take lots of pics to share with YLF. I have always wanted to visit Greece so I will be living vicariously through you!

Happy travels!

Heh... business attire...

ETA: Ok, that's too short an answer. I need to pontificate. It's because I miss the good old days and like a bit of formality. I think I've taken too many plane rides also. I kinda don't care anymore about being functional.
Suz has said it in a nutshell!
I agree with almost everything: yes to clothes with stretch, layers for warmth, wearing bulky things like boots so they won't take up room in the suitcase.

For overnight flights, as US to Europe flights almost always are, I always wear pants- never a skirt or dress. Trying to sleep on a plane is never easy, particularly if you're in coach. I tend to sprawl all over, or tuck my legs under me, and it wouldn't be a pretty sight in a skirt!

My typical outfit is ponte pants, or something similar, a silk tee, a knit blazer or structured cardigan, and a scarf. I take my shoes off on the plane, so I make sure I bring or wear a pair of warm socks, because I'm almost always cold on planes.

Thank you, for the great replies so far. Great photo Suz and some wise ideas, like the no metal and incorporating elaments. Missvee, BJ, Elly,Desmo,Claire also great ideas. Bj, you mention a scarf and I was thinking about that this time, and stretch items and layers are all possibles. Desmo, you mentioned ponte pants and I like that thought as the have a good bit of stretch usually.
We have an early get-up (1.30 in the morning ) as we have to be at the airport for 3am for a 5am flight. We will start off when it's chilly and the plane will be frigid AC but we arrive in a very warm Greece, so I am going to need light layers I guess, that I can peel off when we arrive. I want to stop just wearing track pants and try something else. As a jean is out of the question perhaps a ponte pant is the way to go. I also thought about my denim jacket as a topper and I may be able to wear it for chilly evenings when I am there ; but I wondered if it would be big enough to layer over a sweater and a Tee.
Lots of food for thought so far.

I usually wear jeans, slip-on flats, a button front, blazer, scarf and trench. I think I'd add my striped pullover to my bag in case of extreme cold. My last couple of flights made me wish I had worn boots, even though I live in a warm place and I was going to a warm place. If I'm seated next to the window, my feet and ankles can get unbelievably cold. On a short hop (1-2 hours) I wouldn't need so many layers as long as it was summer.

Suz- I just had to pop in and say how chic you look between the pose and the outfit. It has been so amazing watching you let your style come out since you've come to YLF.

Diane-- in the past I've tended to travel like MissVee. Since I live in Colorado and like to hike I often have boots as part of my luggage for one reason or another, and I tend to try to wear them on the plane to save on the weight I have to lift (I have a gravel driveway, so most of my luggage doesn't have wheels since it just adds 8+ pounds of weight I have to carry to and from my vehicle). I like to wear long pants (when I travel somewhere warm often I will wear my hiking pants as they are often the only pants I bring) or an opaque legging or tight since I tend to get cold on planes, don't like my legs to touch the seat-- they often itch, and I once sat next to a man who I woke up to touching my legs. Despite the fact that it isn't very chic, I also like to wear a sweater or sweatshirt with a hood or wear a big scarf that I can use as a barrier between my head/face and the plane or light if I choose to sleep and to keep my neck and ears warm from drafts if I'm particularly cold or sleepy. Washable stuff is pretty important to me as well . . . I don't mind wearing my plane clothes home on the return flight, but I like to be able to wash the plane germs off, especially with how many people are often sick when flying in and out of cold places in the winter. So yeah, I often look like I'm going on an adventure travel trip on a plane, it is gear, but better than gym clothes. Other than avoiding itchy plane seats and freezing, that stategy is all about wearing instead of packing bulky things and using things for multiple purposes.

It's been a few years since I've flown and I think I probably would change my strategy in the future. I have circulation issues with my legs and feet, so shoes that are non-restricting and easy to take on and off and wiggle my toes would be on the top of my list--- compression socks or tights are also high on the list, smartwool calf-high compression running socks also keep toes fresh smelling and warm. I'm now one whose belly swells, so I wouldn't wear anything with a tight waist.

Jeans with stretch, knit tank /tee/turtle depeanding on season, sweater/loose jacket/ leather jacket /trench as topper and scarf. I wear laceless cons and bring another shawl and thick socks for the plane.

I have worn moto boots in the winter...the fryes veronicas in the taller height. Easy on off because i sized up.
