Soon I'm going to do the AG Skinny-Off: I have two pairs, two different size, same model. The size up *felt* really loose after a few hours' wear. But pics told a different story: they look fine. I can't say they were sagging in the rear. Maybe you could notice in the front. I suspect the smaller pair will be just-right perfect. They are in second wash now.

The AG bootcuts, on the other hand, have very very little give in them. I expected they would, but nopppee... I wore them constantly for a week, no washing... nopppeeee... so I wound up duplicating in next size up, for "fat" days.

What I hate is having to run jeans through the dryer to get them back to snug again. That makes them wear out and fade sooner. And, you shouldn't have to put premium denim in the dryer after the first few deliberate shrink-for-hemming cycles.

Urban Outfitters BDG cigarette jeans, if you can get them over your ankles, do not stretch much at all. They stretch, but more of a "just right" stretch. Recommend that brand -- I think they are under $60. I have two pairs that have lasted now for several years and look just fine.

The stylist I worked with told me that any jeans that should fit tight, such as skinnies, must be sized down. She said that the spandex is like rubber & that as it warms up due to body heat, it stretches.

OK, I bought 2 pair of DKNY Soho skinnies. The SA convinced me that the 6s were too big, so I bought 4s (I am not a fan of vanity sizing, and in fact it annoys me. These are not really size 4). They are snug. My plan is to wear them around the house with the tags on. Now I just need to find a day where I am home.

Now may I rant about jeans sizing in general? It's ridiculous. I must have tried on 30 pair of jeans today, Why do we put up with this? In one brand, a 29 fit me, in another, the 31 wouldn't fit over my hips. Size 32 was the largest size I found in several of the brands. I consider myself "median-size", which leaves out more than half of the "regular" sized population from wearing these jeans, let alone anyone who is plus-sized.

I have had Gap Long and Leans that were great (one of the first versions) and more recent ones that bagged like crazy. My cheap ON jeans don't bag quite as much but still do a bit. I bought Kut Diana skinnies and wore them all day yesterday and they gave a bit but don't bag. I picked up a pair of inexpensive jeans at Winners a few weeks ago and they really hold their shape. Probably better than any jeans I've had in a decade.

I don't think it is price. I'm not sure it is even the fabric content. Perhaps it is the tightness of the weave in the denim. I wish there was a way to tell. Perhaps if we all returned them when they bagged out to the point of being unwearable, the manufacturers would correct the problem.

I don't wear skin tight jeans, but I sized down when I bought NYDJ since the brand runs HUGE. They start off *normal*, and don't particularly bag out on me. Actually, I don't think I've EVER had a huge bagging out problem other than after I lost a little weight, and the jeans that started off fairly roomy when purchased later only fit in the first few hours of wear. Maybe it is a function of where we carry our weight and how low we wear our jeans? My jeans are mid-rise or a smidge higher.

BTW, I've never purchased premium denim since 1) I can't fit into truly skinny jeans; 2) not sure that premium denim comes in straight legs; and 3) I would rather spend my money on other stuff.

Urgh, I hate denim sagging! I had a pair once that were two sizes smaller than what I normally wear, yet after wearing for a couple of hours had stretched out so much that they were literally falling down. I ended up giving them to someone two sizes larger than me!

Interestingly, I have J Brand that Janet mentioned, in black, and they do not sag on me. They slide down, but I think that's more my having larger thighs that tend to 'grab' onto the legs and slowly pull them throughout movements of the day. My worst sag offenders are my victoria's secret skinny corduroy cargos.

I don't think the problem is limited to cheap denim. I have CJ by Cookie Johnson colored jeans (two pairs) that stretch a lot.

I do like Paige for regular dark wash denim and have had great luck with Kut from the Kloth. For black (and colored) skinnies, you could try ATLoft (they have two types of skinnies - one is modern skinny and the other is curvy skinny; I am pretty sure both come in a variety of colors. You can get them for about $35 if you catch one of the 40% off sales. I noticed that some online reviews mention that they stretch too much but I have not had this problem with mine so the fabrication may be different by color.

I think Target usually does not take worn items back, and the Loft is the same way. So if you are concerned, the best bet might be to buy from Nordstrom where you can always return things if they don't work out.

Ah...sagging denim. It is such a mystery. The brands that sag on some of us don't sag on others. And sometimes it's not the fabrication, apparently.

Exhibit a: kut from the cloth. I have a pair. I love them. But they are. Bf jeans on me after an hour's wear.

Exhibit b: Gap Long &Lean. Stretched out so much on Shannon she donated. Never bag on me.

I have no idea what to suggest. Except do Not buy Not Your Daughters jeans. They seem to bag out on everyone, although the ponte knit pants are supposed to be good.

Yep, sagging s more a function of what blend they are made of, rather than price point. I find that anything with more than 5% elastane or spandex, sags horribly. I buy those super tiny, because I know they will grow. Also, they start losing shape as they get older.
I've had best luck with the 7 FAM Roxanne skinnies. They seem to retain shape the best. I have lots of AE skinnies, but those sag. I just buy super tight so they look fine when they do.

It's not just inexpensive jeans! I have two pairs of JBrand that do this a bit. Having the waist taken in helps me a bit, as I have to size up a little in waist size to get those jeans to fit my thighs. I have a pair of Kuts that do this a lot too -- they start off the day looking normal and end up looking like boyfriend jeans!

I've got to say that Paige has been the best brand I've worn for this particular issue. They're pricey, but I have several pairs that have seen lots of washings and wearings but still look nearly new.

Many cheap jeans grow through the day; I'm not sure why. They shouldn't with only 1-2% spandex.

Try Kut from the Kloth skinnies. Not premium and you can often find them at Nordstrom Rack for even cheaper. These don't grow....(see Angie's review and comments in the store).

Not sure about Target's returns, they never seemed that helpful in that dept. to me, but maybe things have changed. Give it a try. I like curve-id jeans quite a lot and don't find them to stretch out much. I also wear DKNY Soho skinny jeans and they seem to hold their shape pretty well thoughout a long day.

Ann in New England on "Denim woes. Your advice?"

I recently bought my first pair of skinnies, and I love them. (I know, just as you are all getting sick of the trend...). They are Old Navy Sweetheart skinnies, and they "grow" as I wear them throughout the day, but not so much that I think I can size down.

Still tiptoeing into the skinnies and colored denim waters, I bought 2 pair of colored denim skinnies at Target. I wore the first ones the other day. They "grew" terribly, and though I could never really get a good look at my backside, they felt wrinkly and saggy there, and I needed to hitch them up. I still don't think I can size down, though.

So here are my questions:
Is this a function of "cheap" denim? For black skinnies I would be willing to shell out the $ for premium denim if I could be sure this wouldn't happen.

I'm not so sure if I'm willing to spend that kind of $ for colored denim, which is likely a fad (at least in these colors of cobalt and teal).

Or is this just a function of the fabrication? The ON jeans are 99% cotton, 1% spandex. The Target jeans are 2% spandex.

I can still return the teal jeans, as they still have tags. Do you think I can return the cobalt ones to Target even though I've worn them, since I'm unhappy with them? I still have the tags and the receipt.

And what do I replace them with? I really want 1 or 2 pair of colored denim, mid-rise, but I just can't justify spending more than about $60 per pair. For the black ones, I can spend more -- also mid-rise, "curvy" fit. I have a mom figure, so please suggest accordingly.

Do I need to wear them around the house with the tags on before I decide to keep them?

Thanks.
