I wear my dark blue denim and white denim skirts about equally and would love to find a black or grey version that is knee length and a pencil skirt. The casualness of denim works well for my lifestyle and they can be worn year round

So glad the new denim skirt worked out for you, Sterling. It’s a beauty.

I finally gave up my search for a casual black denim skirt this season—this is the 3rd summer that I’ve been searching. A couple of weeks later I found one!

Actually, my sister found it. She discovered a cute little highwaisted denim number at Target for $20. It was adorable on her, but it didn’t occur to me to try it on because she is a tiny houglass and I am a strapping rectangle in comparison. It was only on the way to the checkout counter that my brain made the connection: highwaisted skirt + black denim. We are now skirt twins. Love my new skirt. Easy to throw on and go and look casually polished.

Just saw this thread - I'm glad you found a cool skirt! My particular button vs zipper fly comment was about jeans, but I can imagine it applies to skirts too, if the gaping isn't an issue. And I like the look of your skirt. Definitely has its own unique spin on the classic.

The skirt is AMAZING. It gaps a bit, but not so much that I can't make it work. I could even size down, but I am guessing that this size results in the least amount of gaping. I will try on one size down in the store before I make my final decision.

Once I decide on the size, I will implement Mel's suggestion and sew the gaps closed.

Side note: Recent shopping excursions have been teaching me that I lost two full sizes. I have been buying only one size down. I think it took me some time to absorb this change and become comfortable with it. Luckily, I had the force of the Forum to caution me to build micro-capsules during this stage of my journey. They were wise.

Thank you, Teresa. The white denim skirt is just what I was look for. It is no longer available. My loss. But the good news is that I will keep Garnet Hill on my shopping radar.

DonnaF -- I am so glad you provided a review of the Sam Edelman skirt. I have been looking at it on and off for a couple of weeks now. I don't know why I never ordered it, but I can now rest assured that my decision was correct. I wouldn't have been happy.

Gorgeous skirt Sterling. I also find buttons on skirts problematic. I adore button flies on jeans because the buttons are so close together but on skirts, the buttons are spaced further apart. But there may be ways around this.

I hope you will post a picture when the skirt arrives.

I was going to warn about the same thing as Angie. I love the look of a button front denim skirt, and have tried many. Even when I size up, they manage to gape. I am not sure why? I have a white denim JCrew dress that has a bib effect on top and a pencil skirt on the bottom, a bit like overalls, and it doesn’t gape, but I’m not sure why either. I’m sure there is some magic mix of design and spacing that made it work. I look for size and rear zippers.

I agree about gaping. Also make sure your tops are the right proportions. I, too, have been seeking a white jeans skirt. In retrospect a too short one I had would have been perfect if I had picked open the hem. But I didn’t think to do so before I got rid of it.

FWIW the $88 Sam Edelman white jeans skirt at Nordstrom is very unflattering. I found it to be a nice length (20 inches maybe) but overly stretchy. Even after sizing up twice it looked terrible and was not as opaque as I want. At least I had the presence of mind to conclude it was the skirt and not me!

This skirt will be a fabulous addition to your wardrobe if the buttons don't gape. Be sure to do a sitdown test before cutting the tags. It may not hurt to do a trial wearing it and walking quickly . Does it give you room to stride? Do the buttons come undone. Does the skirt turn or ride up as you walk?

A caution about buttoned skirts - they can gape when you sit, or even on the tummy area when you stand. Watch for that. I much prefer zippers. I am wearing my denim midi today - this is my exact outfit:

3Style -- I thought the white would be dressier. I have no idea why I thought that ... except perhaps the blue denims I have looked at all seemed very casual. I'll make sure the bottoms don't look weird. Thanks for the tip.

I, too, have been looking for a white, knee-length denim skirt, but haven’t found one yet. (Madewell was too short, Boden chino was so large that I got frustrated with buy/return, an Orvis one sold out.) In “settling” for a blue one, I asked myself if the blue would be orphaned, even if I find a white one next season. In my case, the answer was, “no” because my super casual skirts had dwindled to two, one of which is completely worn out.

This is a great skirt- love the buttons- and if you can wear it to work, all the better.

I always loved non blue denim skirts(they can be dressed up so well!), esp white, grey and black (for ex.waxed) and have a few. I've recently found white denim skirts with small asyimmetric slit on a front leg and zipper on the back-so not bulking my tummy further:-) but now I want some blues, with embroidery on low sides, too!:-)

Sterling, perhaps it would help to articulate why you thought you wanted a white one.

I really liked my white LE for walking around in bright sunlight and high wind and not worrying about wind blowing my skirt up. I live in a beach town on a peninsula, and used to live in Chicago, so I’m always thinking about wind in terms of practically.

And, I found that if I wore the white denim with a button down shirt or a cotton blazer, it was dressy enough for my fairly casual work environment.

My particular side comment about the BR skirt is that I tend to like buttons on tops, cardigans and blazers. I bought an F21 skirt in mustard a few years back to test drive the color. I found the buttons down the front to be a huge deterrent to wearing it, because buttons all the way down looked weird. Mustard I liked but I’m currently on a huge green kick, so that is my default faux neutral.

I wish my white denim skirt could be taken in, but I can tell it’s just too three dimensional in the tush to deconstruct and salvage.

I think it will work for me, Toban. It might be better than white (fourth rationalization). I am excited. The zippers bulge out on my lower abdomen and accentuate the lower tummy. Greyscale's comment about buttons was revolutionary.

Love this skirt for you! I find my denim skirt so very versatile and awesome in three seasons. For my body shape I prefer zipper and just above knee length, but I can see you rocking the midi length. Looking forward to seeing it on you.

I have been avidly following Greyscale's posts about upgrading essential wardrobe items and her search for black denim skirts:

https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....ssorted-kr

Both her posts struck a cord with me. I am one that buys a cheaper version of something (e.g., while jeans) to experiment and see if this is a wardrobe item I want to invest. Once I reach a certain comfort level, I most certainly do upgrade. This system has served me well through the years because if a particular trend does not work for me, I lost little in the experiment. I use Joy's insightful question of "if I upgrade to this garment, will I continue to search for this item????"

Joy's question works GREAT for wardrobe items that are not my personal obsession (e.g., black, and now, navy slacks). I will never NOT be shopping for them.

Anyways, this post is about denim skirts. I have been fascinated with Greyscale's black denim skirts. And now I have to have one. Not black. I am looking for a knee length, white denim pencil skirt. So I bought this one.

Not knee length, check. Not white, check. Pencil, check. Denim, check.

Is this the ultimate in settling!? It has not shipped yet, but I am oddly excited to try it on. I love the buttons. I think Greyscale pointed out that buttons are preferable to zippers (noted). Buttons, check.

The dark color and the length might make this skirt more useful (first rationalization). I am thinking I might be able to wear it to work ... sans hose (second rationalization)!!! I certainly own the shoes to coordinate with a skirt like this (third rationalization).
