Great Antje! I can see you pulling off this look. I think that the secret is in the sock and the rest of the ensemble. If you choose a juvenile looking sock, it's not going to work. Keep it sophisticated, tailored and streamlined and you'll pull the look off appropriately at 40 plus.

I've been curious about the socks sticking out boots look myself, and decided to just try it out today. I wore black knee socks that peeked out from my red boots, which are a bit "western" (but not completely cowgirlish), under a dark grey denim skirt. I was surprised how good it looked. Definitely a fun look, and I didn't feel that it was "too young" for me (I just turned 40.) Stephanie, just try it out, you might be surprised

At what age should people not wear those cute socks sticking out above tall boots? i saw that and thought it was super cute and a good way to wear boots in the late spring without being too hot in tights...

that is really a good skirt ..thank you moremirchi ! I am going to listen to you all and stick to my usual knee length skirts . I havent tried calf length yet because I thought they would make me look more round but will try one.

Mirah - I know you are looking for a longer A-line skirt but if you do decide to go for shorter (knee lenght perhaps) dark denim skirt. I bought one at Nau and absolutely love it. Its not A-line but very well contructed skirt for my body type - just in case you are interested :)

I do not prefer ankle length skirts for women unless they are tall. The model in the Boden catalogue looks great in the skirt because she's pushing 6 ft. Mid-calf skirt lengths for shorter women are great, especially when they are paired with knee high boots. This can even look quite funky. I bought a mid-calf length skirt last year which I love and I’m not tall either (5ft 6). My suggestion Mirah is to try and shorten your skirt length to at least mid-calf and show off those boots! It’s a more current and flattering look.

Angie, it makes sense that shorter women should stay away from ankle length skirts.and i'm 5ft 4 so i do fall in the category..i just feel very comfortable in them.
It would be great if you could please post some tips on how to pair them up (not denim but ones in nice flowy fabrics . ).. or do u completely recommend against them ?

Mirah, I was perusing the Boden website and they have a long washed linen skirt. Even though it's not denim, the image online looks denim-ish. (I just made up that word hee hee). Maybe you can trade fabric so you can still acheive the look you're after without sacrificing mobility.

Super advice Plushpenguin. Ankle length skirts are dated and hard to pull off with style. They are the last item a 5ft 6 or shorter women should be wearing. If you don't need to wear an ankle length skirt (because of a religious requirement), don’t wear one. I’ll be blogging about this soon so stay tuned.

I've seen skirts like the one you are looking for at Coldwater Creek. I've never had an A-line denim skirt, so I wouldn't know about not being able to walk in them. I have had several straight denim skirts though and slits that come above the knee seem to help with the walking issues. Hope this helps.

Is there a reason it has to be floor length? I agree with Nicole, they're impractical when they're literally ankle length. Also, denim skirts that long are hard to find partly because they tend to look extremely dated, very hippie dippie. But if you shorten the length just a little, to calf length or just below the knee, and get it in a very dark wash, it will look much more modern. The medium length are also easier to find. If you just want to cover your legs, maybe you could pair a medium length denim skirt with knee high boots. It's a wardrobe staple for me.

Mirah, I suspect the reason you are having a hard time finding an ankle length denim skirt is because they are impossile to walk in. I had one once, exactly as you described, not heavy denim, but not stretchy. Long A line down to my ankles. Even though it was A line, my stride (especially going up stairs) was impeded by the fabric.

Hi.. Angie's post today reminded me of this... I have been looking for an ankle length, a-line dark denim skirt which is not stretchy but not too heavy, for a while now and just cant seem to find it. I thought fall and winter would have been a good time for those to appear in stores. I'm not sure if it will be flattering on me but I do want to try it out once ..Can anyone guide me to a specific store or what time of the year would be good to look for it?
