The Anthro jacket is indeed Pilcro. However...I think I might not be getting it after all. When I put it in my cart, it said it was the last one. And I haven't gotten an e-mail saying that it has shipped yet, and it's been two days. Usually that means that the item is out of stock. Boo hoo.

I would suggest stretch or finding one you like and having the fit customized through a tailor. I have found that denim jackets are consistently boxy unless you are able to find more of the denim shirtjacket style that was much more body conscious. I'll be watching this thread as I also struggle with finding jackets that aren't too boxy in the waist and shoulders.

Thanks, karen13! Actually, I was in WHBM two days ago, and they had the jacket. Upon seeing it closer up, I decided that it was not what I needed style-wise. I ended up ordering a jacket from Anthro instead. Thank you for thinking of me!

Karen13, thanks for the rec! I hadn't been looking for a nontraditional style, but I do like highly detailed pieces, and the jacket you linked to does have a lot of detail. I am desperate for toppers, and this one might serve me well. I will stalk it and order it once it goes on sale!

Gigi - I don't know if non- traditional color is what you are looking for, but I love this jacket! It comes in a 00 petite, which might work for you. It is quite stretchy. It is an Angie Top Pick too.

For fit guidance, I modeled the 2 regular in the thread below ( I'm 5'2", but I wanted the extra body length). The petite version ran about a half size smaller than the regular size. Even though I got YFL approval on the fit of the 2, I ended up exchanging for the 4 for more fall layering comfort. The 4 reg is roomy, and I am typically a Petite Small, a bit busty with broad shoulders, so opposite of you.

You sound teeny tiny Gigi! I'm 5'0 but, err, medium shaped, especially in the upper body/chest/shoulders. My fitted jean jackets are all from LOFT, a few seasons back, before the more relaxed/slightly oversized look came in style. Prior to LOFT, best luck I had was in the children's section of Old Navy or Gap, size children 14. My LOFT collection includes XS and Small petite, as my weight fluctuates, and I gain first in upper body/chest.

I also have one cropped denim jacket from WHBM in small petite, which I don't wear as often because it's ... cropped. Works only with dresses, not pants.

You say WHBM works for you? I have a friend who's my height but shaped different than me (more pear than inverted triangle), and weighs less. She's teeny tiny compared to me! She borrowed my WHBM leather jacket last Fall and it looked totally different on her than me, in truth I think it looked much better on her, even if it was loose in the shoulders. It had much more "cool factor" on her than me.

Ever since, I've been playing around with sizing up in jackets to get that "cool factor" affect myself, with mixed (mostly dismal) results, because length also increases proportionately.

I'd have liked to see it on because I doubt you have smaller shoulders than I do - unless your shoulders slope. My shoulders are narrow, but square. I layer the jacket over thick pullovers too. Tailored, but not body con.

Angie, I usually wear a petite XXS, but even that size of top is sometimes too big for me at some retailers. (Tops are my nemesis.) Generally I fit the PXXS at WHBM, JCrew, and Anthro. I have a few Caslon and Halogen tops in PXXS that fit OK.

I do think I need a cropped version, Suz, as I want to wear it with sleeveless dresses, and cropped seems like it would create the most flattering proportions.

Smittie, I'm surprised that you had to go down two sizes! JCrew usually runs narrow and small. Yikes.

Joy, did you have to size down in JCrew too?

I wear JCrew jean jackets and size down *2 sizes* from my normal size in this brand. It looks too boxy and big through the chest and above the chest area otherwise.

My most worn denim jackets are from Target. I sized up to get a more oversized boxy look that I could layer underneath. They run small. My more expensive ones get worn most with sleeveless summer dresses as they tend to be tight on my broad shoulders. The more cropped or shrunken look works best for me with frocks. The one I reach for most is JCrew.

So....here's the thing...my cropped denim jackets don't come anywhere near my hips. They hit more or less at my natural waist.

I think you need a CROPPED kids' jacket. Or cropped petite.

The Lucky one does come to my hips but I never ever wear it closed. I could close it if I wanted to, but wouldn't.

I'm not as petite as you, Gigi, but I wear a kids' jacket from Old Navy (that's my white denim jacket -- the Find is women's but mine is the kids' version). I also have two others -- one is a Lucky brand with leather sleeves (it is a bit longer and works better with pants than the other two) and another is a cropped distressed version from the Bay. (Sorry, no Find, but it is definitely cropped. The sleeves are way too long but I roll them up.)

I actually love my denim jackets. Yes, they are boxy, but I like boxy! At least, I like it if the proportions are right. I wear them mostly with skirts/ dresses, with a longer top untucked. They make me happy. :)

Angie, I tried the smallest petite size available. Even if there had been a smaller one, I think going smaller would have made it too tight across the hips.

Angie, I did try the Kut in a petite, and the fit was still off. It was still really bulky on me in the bust and too long.

So far the best fit has been a children's denim jacket from Old Navy, but the fit was still not good enough for me to buy the jacket.

I might just give the denim jacket hunt a rest and look for some other kind of topper.

It took me a long time to find one I liked and eventually I ended up with two--one from Target (medium wash) and one from Eddie Bauer (darker wash and more fitted).

Murph, I love the idea of taking an old one and having it reworked! I've never been a huge fan of jean jackets, they are just so stiff and never fit me well.

Are Kut ones (at Nordstrom) too long and narrow at the hip for you? I study photos and keep trying. . .

Exactly, Gigi! And BULKY. I've had a medium-rinse Levi's Trucker jacket in my closet for 6-8 years with only a handful of wears for the reasons you gave. After seeing an altered version mentioned by Janet from Anthropology, mine is now being reworked by removing the collar, waistband, and cuffs. If it doesn't work, not much loss to my wardrobe.
