I'd say that retailers have overbought across the board for skinnys this year. At my store we have skinnys, bootcuts, some straight legs and weekender( boyfriend) and one single trouser style.
What seems to be moving fastest ? Things that are different, new and fresh, and things that are basics that must be refreshed when worn or a new size is needed. So white or black skinnys ,trouser jeans, Seven7 designer brand( usually has more bling or embroidery on the back pockets); and dark wash boot or straight cuts.

Some clients have requested flares or wide trouser cuts but so far we've not seen any. Other color options would be welcomed ( other than shades of indigo and distressing) but other than skinnys getting white and black options -Nope!
The company overdid it last year on ankle cut skinnys . That didn't work . Except for some petites and trendys. Especially since they didn't get much in tunic lengths in to properly pair with them.
I suspect they'd make a ton of money if they put some stuff out that wasn't skinny, distressed or the same old color. Black bootcuts, white straight cuts, printed trouser jeans would all be exciting to buy, as would more vests and jackets to go with .

Maybe this drop in sales is due partly to demographics (more people reaching 55+) and the increase in obesity (not necessarily obese, but the increase in overweight people. Jeans seem to be least comfortable for people with the excess weight around the middle.

Even though I am old I still wear the same size jeans I wore 10 years ago, and live in them. I can not see this changing anytime soon. I am however, wearing things like track pants and yoga pants a bit more, especially for agility with my dog if I can find nice ones with adequate pockets.

BIG Yuck to leggings -they do not look good on anyone,,except thin people worn with tunics or any top long enough to cover ones butt. IMO, they do not look very flattering with chunky legs.

to get me to buy sweats, they had to make them look like denim. Nuff said.

Ah Rachy the compulsion repulsion cycle, I suffer from that afflication too.

Perhaps denim is losing it's fashion status but I imagine it will be a staple of many wardrobes for a long time yet.

I also remember jeans being declared dead in the early 00's before denim and deisgner jeans revived the market for a different demographic.

I think that all sales are down, really. Not just denim. But I think similarly to Denise in that the brands need to diversify the product a bit more. Even where I work, I still see only a sea of skinnies punctuated by an occasional BF jean. How many skinnies can one own? Trouser cut jeans and dressier finishes would definitely help, too.

I had to clap my hands over my eyes at your post title. NO WAY. Blasphemy. Etc. Jeans are my life - which is funny , because they never used to be.

Interesting read though - I love this stuff (the business of fashion). So many reasons for a decline or stabilizing of sales. Happens to every category of consumer merchandise at one time or another. I know I'm done buying for awhile - I have more pairs now than I have ever had in my life - without exaggeration. And how many do you really need?

Cocol is right on: without further design and fabric innovation - we're in a holding pattern.

I do think that right now there are a lot of casual bottom options that aren't jeans, which is not always the case. Ponte pants, leggings, yoga pants, knit maxi skirts, cotton chinos... Used to be that if you wanted a pant it was either jeans or office wear.

That said, I don't think jeans are going anywhere anytime soon.

Denim won't be leaving my wardrobe anytime soon if ever. I echo Cocolion's thoughts on leggings. And not that we dress for men, but ask most men if they prefer to see a woman in a nice fitting pair of jeans or a nice fitting pair or leggings or athletic wear and I wonder what they'll answer.

I would guess that the drop in sales is more attributable to the state of the economy. Back in the 80's logo athletic wear was also very popular (and affordable). Just the pockets, zippers, buttons and embroidered accents make jeans
way more expensive to assemble than leggings or athletic wear. Yesterday we saw hoards of families wearing various bright colored athletic wear to an outdoor mall we visited. I didn't think of them as being stylish.

Well, according to the article there is around a 6% drop in sales! The bulk of the money is going to athleisure wear! Their term not mine (if I got it correct). People walking around in yoga clothes, more relaxed sports clothing and whatnot. I sincerely doubt that will be me. Perhaps it's the athletic side of me? If I put them on I expect that I am going to exercise, and if someone is wearing them in public, I expect they are going to be smelly and stinky from the gym.

I admit however, that I love to purchase items from Athleta. It's one of my favorite online shopping sites. I will wear sometimes wear their dresses in public. I also like their whatever skorts, which are nice for travel and casual weekdays.

For my daily wear I cannot see giving up jeans. They are my go to favorite. They fit well. To my eye they are more flattering than the leggings, and they are, for me quite comfortable. I love skinny jeans and straight leg jeans. I used to wear them every day during fall and winter. They are appropriate for my work setting. I am branching out into pencil skirts now, but that is far different than athleisure wear!

Maybe one of the reasons for this is because denim market is over-saturated with skin-tight skinnies and denim leggings which are not the most comfortable of jeans to wear? In this regard leggings and ponte pants give a similar vibe but more comfort and hence the preferrence for them?

Well, I work from home and live a casual life as well. But I am no longer all jeans all the time. Now I am mixing it up with lots of other fabrications. While I agree that denim will never go fully out of style....I think the point is that its not necessarily holding that number one spot it has in the past. Just look at all the women out there wearing leggings (as pants, no less ACK!!!) relative to those wearing jeans. And numbers don't lie.

Echo - I think you have a point about the premium denim impact on over all sales. I know that I bought fewer pairs once a decent fit would cost me almost $200. At that point I started looking at other options.

Interesting article -- thanks for the link!

It's depressing that leggings are so popular, I think denim looks much better. And I'll take a legging jean over a knit legging any day. I also think that denim is like a built-in scale. You know how your jeans fit, even the looser styles. Suddenly you put them on and it feels different. You know you're up a few pounds. Leggings, yoga pants etc. -- a different story. Not good news for the growing obesity trend in the US. My Mom has a 90-year old friend who believes that American women's figures have gone down hill and up the scale ever since the invention of the elastic waist pant.

I also think that when some newer silhouettes take hold, denim will jump up again. But there might be a slump for a while.

If I were a premium denim maker I'd diversify and make all sorts of bottoms. Premium makers know about fit. One of the reasons denim went through the roof over the last decade was not only because of the decreasing price of lycra, but also due to the fit expertise. I'd make dressier jeans -- maybe not with actual denim, to get around a lot of workplace dress codes. And I'd make knit bottoms to get at the comfort segment. I'd be making things like culottes too -- premium denim makers need to be more on the forefront of fashion. I think Rag & Bone is an innovation leader but the rest of them, not so much.

I have never regularly worn denim, from the time I was a teen. It just isn't comfortable for me. But for back-to-school? ALL the kids need jeans! I doubt the kids/juniors market for denim is going anywhere! And I wonder if "jean sales" is represented by pairs sold or dollars sold, because the premium denim market has been in decline. If it is dollars sold due to people buying fewer pairs of premium denim (but perhaps the same number of pairs of other brands), then while the market is still down buying would have remained stable.

Regardless, jeans have been "in" almost since they were invented; they aren't going anywhere now. Just wait until the next "new" style of denim becomes all the rage, and the market will be right back up. In the meantime, I'll be enjoying the non-denim trend while it lasts!

I am not sure denim will ever go out of style. . . Seems like it has been a staple since it's invention. But I will go take a read!

I ran across this article today. At first I thought...impossible! But then thinking about it more, I realized that for the first time, new denim is NOT on my list for fall. Usually I refresh my denim with a new pair, but not this year. Too many non-denim options that are striking my fancy! My stack of ponte pants is now the same size as my stack of jeans. I cannot be so different than other people, can I?

http://www.nbcnews.com/busines.....on-n176211

So what about you guys? Do you think denim is in danger of going out of style?
