I have a pretty wide range of patterns represented in my wardrobe. As a general rule, I gravitate towards stripes and plaids over anything else. I'm always drawn to traditional patterns in not-so-traditional colours. No interest in owning a navy/white mariner at this point -- I've had them before -- and would rather a less expected spin on the classic. I like large scale plaids (think Rob Roy/buffalo) but don't want the classic red/black. White-based ginghams are a little too picnic-y for me, but every now and then I fall in love with a gingham in an edgier, murkier palette. I do like florals, but again, only dark ones. In terms of scale, I tend to go for mid-scale, nothing to tiny/busy but nothing huge and blown-up. Apart from stripes/plaids, I always prefer irregular/scattered patterns over "ordered" ones. I'd love to add more fair isle, but finding ones with colours that grab me isn't always easy.

Suntiger- Love your prints, they’re so exotic, I don’t wear these kinds of prints myself, I don’t have that exotic persona.
Suz - Interesting on how you look for greys/silvers or whites in your patterns. Now I’ll be watching for it.
Sal- Thanks for you kind words, and a great point about Suz and Suntiger’s print preferences.

I find prints so interesting and seeing the individual preferences. I can't imagine Suntiger in Suz's prints or vice versa - yet I love them both.

That's a good link Suntiger!!

Thanks Dee for the interesting discussion - I agree with Brooklyn that denim and ditsy is a good mix - and with your layered hair it all reads modern. Put the ditsy with pearls and a classic bob and it reads quite differently. I have one ditsy blouse and I like it with denim shorts or jeans the most.

Finally got a moment to comment here! I love you in your ditsy prints! I'm very fond of Liberty prints myself but can't wear the small scale ones like these very well (don't feel authentic to me) so I will enjoy them on you. Especially with your new layered hair! They look amazing with your waves.

My print preferences are classic and simple. Stripes (especially Breton stripes but others as well.) Checks (houndstooth, gingham) and plaids. Some florals or paisleys. Batik style prints. Asian influenced prints. I like pattern mixing a stripe with a floral or two or more plaids.

My main "rule" for prints is that they need to include a bit of white, light grey, or silver -- something to pick up my hair colour. This makes them cohesive on me.

I love a kitty print. (Siamese for the win!).

Finally getting round to this :)
The page that I posted to the Link Love was eye opening for me. A missing piece of the style puzzle!

Background/negative space- minimal unless it's black, and sometimes sheer. Dense patterns. My features are large on my small face.
Movement- mostly curves, irregular, non repeating patterns. Multiple patterns together in a print (but not patchwork). Complex, organic. Eye doesn't rest anywhere.
Themes- found in nature. Birds, butterflies, leaves, some florals and animal print. Asian especially mandalas. Brocade. Burnout velvet. Filigree. Lace inspired. Knotwork like Celtic. Paisley.
Edges- a few blurred and blendy, marbellized but shifting away from that. Mostly sharpish edges if non repeating pattern and curved lines.
Color- metallic gold accents! Combos of teal/blue/rust/brown or black/rust/burgundy. Black with brown. Low to medium value contrast. Medium/dark overall. Medium saturation. No primary colors.
Scale- medium/large with ***background filled in with smaller pattern***,. Elements of different sizes together. ***Pattern Within Pattern***(shouts this from rooftop!!!).
Not- country, folksy, overly masculine or twee, no graphic prints, no words.

Enjoy some eye candy

I wear all sorts of prints, as long as the garment has some element that works for my Theatrical Romantic Kibbe type. It is a sense of drama that makes different prints work on me. These are some of the prints in my wardrobe. The middle dress is a ditsy floral, but it has a dark romance vibe.

How interesting, I used to say ditsy is not for me, but I always thought about wearing it on a dress (especially A-line midi and viscoze or cotton)--but didn't occur me that you can wear ditsy on a top only. Hah! And a sweater or a tee....Now I see your way to wear ditsy is so very stylish and looks really very authentic on you. I agree it has to do also with unexpected juxtapositioning it to some jeans (which I personally don't do often other than whites/creams)-but your formula may be useful for me turning again to jeans-so, thanx for the inpiration, and YLF, of course, my fave is nr 2!

You wear ditsy prints really well. I agree it softens the denim. Denim + plaid can skew more masculine.

I love prints! I like large scale (especially dark) florals, abstract blurry prints (including ombre and marble prints), prints that mimic nature (like rock formations, timber, verdigris or sunsets), tie dye, artsy prints (especially impressionist style), just about anything with birds or butterflies, warm animal prints, some geometric prints and some graphic (graffiti style) prints, camo, some paisley, houndstooth, medallion style prints (they are my version of dots). I dabble in plaid. I’m off stripes at the moment but I do generally like chevron and diagonal stripes and prefer vertical to horizontal. My preference at the moment is low contrast (which I think is why I’m off stripes).

I love prints and have liked Liberty florals ever since my Mum was sent a blouse by my UK-based sister in the 90s. Florals are my favourite, of all kinds, but also like peacocks and butterflies and houndstooth and tartan- have fewer items of the latter two though. Not a huge fan of stripes, think I own only 2 striped tops of which one was a gift.
One of my favourite summer tops is called a “blurred floral” and my newest summer dress bought for the wedding I went to in Canada is called “hazy floral”. There seems a similarity there, to me. I am also constantly drawn to embroidered florals.
I like your ditsy florals and you make a good Queen!

You look fab in those small florals--I can see why you love them! This is an interesting question. I love prints and always have lots I'm wearing, and almost all of my tops are patterned. I favor all of the classics (all sorts of plaids, windowpane checks, gingham, etc.), love an ikat, a paisley, and a block print, but right now I am kind of obsessed with stripes in all of their glory, so horizontal, vertical, skinny, thick, you get the idea!

Star- Interesting about your current relationship with prints, I think carefully assessing how any individual print makes you feel is certainly a good way to know whether its authentic to you or not.
ChristelJ- I struggle to buy solids for myself as well, they somehow just don’t feel as exciting to purchase.

Your style works so beautifully on you. There is a softness but never too soft or sweet. Your denims looks great on you and do contrast the prints perfectly. I share a lot with you in terms of loving ditsy prints, Fossil bags and dad-cut jeans. However, there really aren't many prints I wouldn't wear. Strong jewel toned prints and lumberjack plaids are the only ones I can think of that I avoid. I love ditsy florals but also larger florals, geometrics, abstract designs, polka dots, stripes, and some plaids. I do like a bit of flounce, and I almost never tuck. Most of my clothes are prints. I have to force myself to buy solids to balance them!

Oh yes, these are great on you! Love the middle outfit in particular but all are fab.

Prints-wise, I like the classics - stripes of course, but I also like polka dots, glenplaid and some geometrics that are not too big or bold.

All look great on you!
I prefer geometric print or geometric mixed with some floral, ikat print, some moody ombre, black and white graphics ( no polka dots, and no plain stripes ).
Strong contrast is attractive but rarely works for me - need something quieter.

You wear those prints well! Your hair is looking fab too.

I came to realize that small scale prints are not necessarily my friend. "Ditsy" prints don't feel much like me. But if a print is too large and bold, I don't quite feel right either, especially if it is high contrast. Prints are a very emotional pull for me -- when I see one I love, I know it right away. These are some of the prints added to my wardrobe this year.

These prints look great on you. I like the scale and the level of contrast on you and the softness contrasted with the other components of the outfits. Nodding along with your description and observations, spot on.
Ditsy prints do not agree with me I would say… I feel best in solid colors and I wear prints in scarves. Usually geometric patterns, dark florals (larger scale), or watercolor prints, other large scale prints. It was interesting to reflect on which patterns feel authentic to me, have not thought of it before in terms of scarves.

Cat2 - Yes combined a certain way ditsy can definitely vibe farmish.
Angie- Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll certainly try them, Haha now for Queen Ditsy, that could be misconstrued the wrong way IYKWIM.
Irina - You look fab in those large scale prints.
Unfrumped- Yes flouncy is not something I wear too well either.
Roberta- Gorgeous dress, I can see why it was so hard to pass on.

I love all scales of print, except perhaps the very tiniest, but I like the colors to be strong or contrasting. Otherwise, I feel like it reads as one heathered color, which I don't like on me. I've had many Boden dresses over the years in ditsy prints, but they tended to be dark blue, or black, or deep red.

I do like an animal print; snake, leopard, etc., but draw the line at zebra. I bought a zebra t-shirt from Boden that I thought I would love, but it turns out I never wear it. The pattern feels too stark.

Aside: I bought the Selina dress below in five different colors back in the day. In the great retirement purge I gave away three of them. It was HARD.

I love your outfits!

I do best in smallish all-over prints like checks, houndstooth, smaller plaids, polka dots , and I DO line some “ ditsy” patterns, usually best if colors are not too sweet. Kind of, “ I know it when I see it “.

Also, juxtaposing feminine items with more masculine or sporty seems to work for me. But a little tricky, because, the feminine needs to be a bit subtle, not flouncy or Boho.
