Hi lovely Echo! I meant I posted a thread on this issue:

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....s-the-line

Your illustrations are much more helpful than mine!

Una, I don't think it was you. Your new ankle pants are fab, and definitely fit my definition of ankle pants. I just didn't comment on your thread because I am hopeless when it comes to PPL.

It was me. And these fit my definitions but I see such a wide range of pants being called different things. It makes searches hard.

These are my definitions too. i think the problems arise when you factor in all the varying widths and styles of these lengths. to start with the ankle pants in your photos are skinnies-- they are OK, but if they are fuller in the legs they are not. The capris in your photo are ok too, but if they were even a wee bit longer, of had wider legs they would be those that some are calling frumpy--Right? The culottes and bermudas are the same as they have always been..but there seems to be variations of these too.

Also in my newspaper fashion photo article that are photos taken of real people shopping in one of our local upscale trendy areas there were something called capri leggings that to me look like those just below the knee tight things worn jogging or to the gym. Here they were worn as street wear and were the current fashion well dressed --go figure..

It seems to me there was just a thread regarding this, and if there was please forgive me. I cannot find it.

After seeing numerous threads with outfits featuring culottes, capris, ankle pants and/or bermudas, I am confused. What is the definition of each?

In my mind, culottes were a skirt-like version of capri length pants with a flowy silhouette. Capris were the just past the knee or mid calf length pants. Ankle pants were longer, hitting just above the ankle bone, and commonly tapered (they remind me of what they used to call pedal pushers, sometimes with little slits at the bottom side seams). And bermudas were knee-length shorts, but still considerably shorter than capris or any of the others.

But it seems my definitions are outdated. Are the terms used interchangeably now? Does it just depend on what the designer or brand calls them? Are there any true definitions of the terms now? What do they mean in your head?

The pictures below typify the pictures in my head of the following items: ankle pants; capris, culottes, Bermudas.
