Thanks for the clarification, Angie. The photos are interesting. I am drawn to several of these looks and could see trying something like them: 1, 2, 3, 10, 12, 13.

I LOVE this look, and being on the tall side, I think it works well without much effort for me. I would wear #4 and #10 to work in a NYMinute, and #8 (which is my absolute favorite!) would be oh so perfect for a fancy evening out.

I actually do - very long silk shirt/dress over trousers is my one of my favourite looks summertime. Hm, it is a tunic

Visuals are extremely helpful. I am drawn to #4 a lot and like #9 and #10 as possibilities....something to ponder. I don't own a shirtdresses (as you suggested) because they don't lay nice around my waist (I get some sort of poof thing) esp on my back and the small of my back. Probable because its small and then I slope into a C shape (my bottom). I wonder if tailoring would fix that problem???

I was in Target today and they had a TON of the style similar to #7, not necessarily such dramatic lace, but long and drapey, with buttons starting at the waist. Must be a trend this season.

4 and 13 are what I call tunics. This is a vey popular look. Just long enough to cover your butt is the length we were supposed to wear when women first started wearing leggings. I remember seeng this first on QVC years back. Legging were not pants!!!! Then along came skinnies and skinnies kept getting skinnier.

The shorter lengths -- 4 and 13 -- are exactly the type I have trouble with, as they hit at an awkward spot; I'm not interested in emphasizing my thighs. I like that #10 has high vents to allow pocket access! I like the drama of 5 and 9; if my life ever required that level of dressiness I might consider that sort of silhouette. #2 reminds me of how I dressed in college -- random dresses/skirts/oversized shirts thrown over random bootcut pants, plus sneakers. I'm not sure that particular combo will ever feel intentional to me. :)

It did occur to me, reading through the other thread, that pretty much every dress Everlane has ever made is prime tunic fodder. They're all basically just really long shirts.

The tunic is a look Elizabeth Suzann does really well too. It's part of the reason I haven't bought anything from them -- I'm not sold on the suitability of voluminous looks for my climate, lifestyle, personality, body, etc.

Suz -- I agree that the pants are the tricky part. Leggings sit so nice and smooth at the waist, and add no bulk at the hips. I think for me I'd also have to find a dress/tunic that is very structured, not soft/clingy/drapy, and that stands away from my body enough that it wouldn't cling to my hips. Part of the appeal of all the looks above is the very clean, straight, columnar effect.

I would like 8 and 9 in my closet right now! I prefer the look of the more dramatic styles, even though they might not be as wearable for a normal life. I like 2 and 5 too. 13 is really cute and wearable, but the length of that top makes it a tricky one for someone built like me, depending on the hemline (again, asymmetry helps!).

Fun visuals!! I would love to try on each of these looks at the right length and size for me and see which ones work. I suspect many of them would.

Trinny Woodall plays with lengths a lot to disguise her shorter legs( she would say this not just me).

I mentioned in the other thread- Judi Dench in the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - she rocked tunics and is not young nor model shaped.

I think getting the right pants is a key here- I have a pair that have an elastic waist and are of a thick fabric - you cannot tuck with them and have to cover the waist - but they sit smoothly under layers and are not bulky.

Quick chime in - sorry to be brief.

Jenni, #11 is in a skirt, and that's a tunic. Suz is bang on the money. OF COURSE you can wear a long tunic when you're shorter. It's about getting the relative proportions right. Women in China, India and Japan are generally very short, and wear tunics with the best of them. I can absolutely see you rock the vibe.

Ginger, good tip. You are clever.

DonnaF, good to hear, and thanks for the kind words.

Suz, I will dress you in a long tunic outfit that you will like. Come on over! You're nailing the details in your last comment. EXACTLY. (Not to worry. All good things come to those who wait - NO leggings - and much love to you).

Jenni, I think...and here is the tricky thing...that if she got the proportions right, a short person could wear similar looks. (Maybe not all of them, but at least some -- after all, DonnaF is petite and she rocks the dress over pants --oops, I mean long tunic look like nobody's business!)

The difficulty is in taking the item cut for a tall woman and trying to wear it...this is where we shorties run into serious problems.

Angie, in mulling on this more, I suspect I probably have the very same issues when it comes to many items -- regular shirts, dresses, jeans, and so on. The difference is, I have years and years and years of unconscious practice at "managing" those items to work on my particular body and body type modifiers, so I know what alterations I'll need to make (and whether they're do-able), I know how to tweak the tuck or semi-tuck or what footwear will extend the legline, and on and on. Because I have far less practice wearing tunics, I'm just not as good at making those mental calculations, and a few bad experiences with crummy proportions and sticky fabrics and ugh -- leggings!! -- have made me imagine it's just too difficult.

I've sorted -- in my own head -- that what I really need to make the look work for me is a loose shirtdress or trapeze kind of top (maybe silk, for the latter) or an asymmetrical dress/ top or maybe even a "mod" style mini -- and slim straight legs -- not kick crops, not true skinnies. And they must be crops, and I must be able to wear a bit of a heel and show a bit of skin at the ankle for structure.

I can totally see myself loving such a look. But so far, I am not sure where to buy this magic outfit. Maybe start with the perfect slim cropped straight leg jean in white or blue. But I already know how hard it is to find the white ones! :)

Yes, well... All my many tunics are very mumsy compared to these. ( In North America is that momsy?) It means kind of frumpy in the way a middle-aged mother could look, the opposite of that 4-letter word I won't put here that is similar to milk. But I note, here is the cry of the short woman, all these models are TALL and you put those outfits on a very short woman and she would drown in fabric. Rant over.
I note pic 11 does not fit the concept definition. Bare legs under.

I already wear outfits close to #1 and #2, and I would wear #12 if it were cut so as not to overwhelm short me and look like I was wearing a sleep shirt. #10 is for my fantasy budget, but I can see the appeal of showing a long length of pants. In my fantasy life with my fantasy boobs, I would wear #3, #5, #8, and #9.

Gee, Angie, without your blog my ideas re silhouettes, color combos, pattern mixing, and so much more would be so restricted and, well, boring. Definitely everyone at my church has noticed the difference in my (non)look pre-YLF vs. YLF. Thanks!

Suz, I agree with you. You pegged that my tunics are all a very particular style, and it's surprisingly hard to find what I want, even now that I know what it is. I'm positive that you have a magic formula (or two) that will work for you! It will just take some experimenting.

If I have one tip: make sure that you objectively LIKE both pieces. There are some tunics that I held onto too long, trying to find the "right" piece to go with... but it turns out the problem was with the tunic itself.

Well, these look amazing on the models. I love them. If I could find the tunic that looked like that on me (and the bottoms to wear it with) I'd be all over this look. So maybe, for me, it is a question of hunting for the OUTFIT vs. an ITEM. Because it's in struggling to mix and match and figure out proportions that I fall flat.

I particularly like 3, 5, 8, 9, 10, and 12, but in my life I can only imagine wearing some version of 3 or 12. However, I would love to do so.

Ah, for a shopping outing with Angie! I'm jealous of your lucky clients.
