I live in New Hampshire. It snowed yesterday... I used to wear a lot of scarves, now I have a toddler and just find they get in the way, and I hate having to find a place to put them when I'm switching between inside and outside. Now I mostly use a merino Buff for neck warmth (because I do have short hair) and love that it fits in a pocket! But I don't think a Buff "elevates" a look in any way the way scarves do. I was actually thinking more about summer scarves, though -- cotton, linen, etc. I'm always happy when I wear them, but don't have enough variety to incorporate them into most of my warm-weather outfits.

Re: silk shirts. Again, I think the toddler is a limiting factor for me. I like silk shirts and jeans together in theory, and can totally see how it would work for others, but it just doesn't make sense for my life. If an event is casual enough for jeans, I probably have my kid with me, which means I need a shirt that's easy to clean and hides stains -- basically, the opposite of silk. And if I'm going somewhere that necessitates hiring a babysitter, then I'm darn well pulling out one of my nice dresses and leaving my jeans at home, because otherwise my dresses would never get worn and I'd literally be in jeans all the time. :)

Maybe it's just a word fashion writers came up with because they were running out of adjectives.

LeD, I hear you. I was up at 5 but am still nursing my coffee 2hrs later because it's *another* cold, dreary May day here on the East Coast and I'm feeling demoralised at the thought of venturing into the world.

Suz, I'm with you on scarves! I wear mine 12 months of the year. They are more than an accessory, they're a necessity (see 'cold, dreary May day' above).

Interesting. I think it means beyond the basic t-shirt and jeans. She have become quite casual so most people find anything elevated. It takes me an 1 hr 1/2 to get started with my work day.

Chiming in to agree with LisaP and Janet about the silk shirts. I pretty much only wear mine with jeans!

Also, LaP, where do you live? Not in my climate, I suspect. Scarves where I live are wardrobe essentials! Seriously, there is no more practical accessory. True, they can "elevate" a look but mostly they are worn because they are a fantastic layer (particularly for the short of hair). I wear scarves 9 or 10 months of the year.

And I procrastinated by drinking a beer and examining the progression of my facial bruising.

I wish I were procrastinating. I have insomnia instead. Anyway, despite delirium, I will venture to say elevate does mean upgrade the outfit with a finishing touch. But what about the rest of the list? Define quirky, cool and, that old bugaboo, effortless.

For me, elevated style is when I stand on a milk crate to reach something on a high shelf.

Or, what Runcarla said; it sounds like just another fashiony word. Because improvements I make and am happy with hardly qualify as elevation.

"For me, 'elevated' comes along with a connotation of 'impractical', or at least focused on aesthetics above function. It reminds me of all those seasonally- or purpose-confused outfits that fashion mags and bloggers love, and that I primally dislike for some reason."

LOL, Laura, I totally know what you mean. The whole, "I'll just throw on a silk shirt to *elevate* these jeans" mentality -- I have a hard time with that. If I'm going somewhere nice enough for a silk shirt, it's somewhere too nice for jeans.

I do think it's possible to elevate without being totally impractical. Scarves seem to be the quintessential "elevator" -- and something I have a hard time investing in, since they're largely aesthetic, that is, they serve no purpose outside of elevating one's look.

Other possibilities: choosing a classic trench over a Goretex shell, wearing a linen t-shirt instead of cotton jersey; tucking one's top, etc. It seems to me that the use of the term "elevate" is a consequence of an ever-casualizing world, where there are fewer and fewer fashion rules. What once would have been quite standard now requires some effort for many of us, and thus becomes a bit of a statement.

Omigosh, I'm not gelling at all this morning. It's a sad and sorry state.

To be honest, I feel elevate means to make something fancier. To add flourish. I think that's what's gone on in Maneera's pictures. A Breton is pretty run of the mill when you think about it, no matter they look good. The little scarf brings it up to 'a look.' Now you're not simply covering your body.

I struggle with this all the time though. Because I can't function with a lot of these touches. The jewelry has to come for safety around machinery. The scarf would make me hot as I clean house and repair my mother's wonky deer fence. The third piece finishing piece only seems to work for a day at the museum or something...

As I pondered on this further, I realized that when I'm trying to elevate my style, I'm trying to add that elusive, ineffable factor that changes how I not just look, but feel in the outfit. Like going from casual to casual-elegant. Or perhaps from just crazy to crazy-cool. It has nothing to do with money for me; it's adding more magic to the mix, to borrow from lisap.

Thankfully my day is over! Phew! Can definitely do with a beer, Suz. And I'm a writer too.....so I'll fit right in the Society of Beer Drinking Ladies!

On to the real topic: To me, "elevated" means what most of you have described. Take a simple look and literally 'elevate' it up a notch with something a bit unexpected. It can mean different things to different people. I would not use that term for something as predictable as a nice pendant necklace with a sheath dress, though technically it does 'elevate' the look. But I would use that term for something that looks unexpected, classy yet totally in sync with the outfit. For example - the trench & the shoes elevate look #1 and the scarf elevates #2.

Another procrastinator - okay so I have done some work already this morning, but only between reading YLF posts.

For me, elevated just means you take a sort of regular outfit and add something that takes it out of the ordinary in a good way. Like the way interesting shoes can make a simple pair of jeans and a tee look better. Or maybe adding a great necklace to a simple sheath, etc. A hairstyle can elevate a look as can makeup.

Suz I love it....defining procrastination as "healing". However I recall you posting on "off topic" about some unpleasant sounding dental work so perhaps you really are healing...

I thought the exact same thing -- your closet should already reflect your style adjectives, not help you get dressed. I have never had any style words because I am a magpie.

Also procrastinating and calling it "healing" here.

I have no idea what "elevated" means. I think it's just a way of saying it looks expensive or, more likely, is expensive.

I am not sure I understand how remembering your three (or five) style adjectives would give you any special advantage in the morning getting dressed, since everything in your closet should theoretically already reflect them, no? ;)

Said by the grumpy woman who apparently has not had enough coffee and is completely unable to identify her own three style words today.

I agree with Lisa. It's a fashion-y word these days that I suppose means to take one's typical style and kick it up a notch with a distinctive piece or a particularly current combination.

Another slow starter here. It's 10am and I need another cup of coffee. It's finally a beautiful sunny day here and I'm debating whether I should do a long-delayed but unpleasant task or shirk my responsibilities and go take photos today (which is what I really want to do!).

To me it means that piece brings it all up a notch. Or makes it" better " . Or brings it to a new level. I don't think it has anything to do with cost, how current it is, or what label is it, rather it's that magical look or style that is just that much better/polished/interesting/. But - it also is going to mean different things to different people - and to me, again, it's all in the eye of the beholder. I guess style is ranked on a magical scale, isn't it? Could be one of those obnoxious words used in the fashion world that is kind of meaningless too - lol.

I am totally procrastinating this morning and indeed have been all weekend, hence my many posts. I have a long petition that I need to write by 2 pm and I'd best move along. But one last thing -- in my non-working, I saw two other web sites this morning discussing the words we use to define our style:

<http://www.whowhatwear.com/eas.....ts?ps=home>

<http://unefemme.net>

I know we have discussed this topic and people's style monikers many times on the forum.

However, I am still not clear on what "elevated" style is. I often see magazines or blogs saying e.g. that a certain item really "elevates" a look. And I can't tell whether that's just another way of saying that someone is wearing a particularly expensive or au courant piece, or if there is a different meaning. I also assume it doesn't mean high fashion.
