Hi HeatherB --

Emily Post is probably rolling in her grave over "Casual Appropriate," ha!

But I agree with everyone upthread about what that probably means and how you can translate it for what you like to wear.

One thing to consider is that there will probably be lots of people with cameras around -- and god forbid lots of candids that end up on Facebook without your consent!

So in addition to the ideas you and other members have tossed around, I'd try to make sure that:

1) The color(s) near my face flattered my coloring

2) Whatever clothing or accessories I wore looked relatively good in photos and hits more or less where I wanted it too on the "busy vs plain" spectrum

3) Whatever I wore looked relatively good from the "table up" -- assuming they will have tables, which maybe they won't? -- since people seem to loooove shooting people from a standing position while they are seated!

Hope you'll continue to share ideas and/or photos...I admit that the "occasion" threads are some of my favorites!

Love the frock! YLF!! I vote a dresser shoe :)

I also *love* dressed up Bermudas or clams with heels and a pretty silky blouse - but it's a harder look to get right.

I knew this was the right place to turn. You're right, this is a highly judgmental group, and it's best to err on the side of dressing up rather than down.

Summer sheath it shall be. I'll post a pic of one I'm considering; it's navy pique, with small embroidery--Laundry by Shelli Segal. It's pictured with bright pink sandals, but I would probably wear a nude cork wedge (Bandolino Notice Me). Thoughts?

I saw a well-dressed woman last night in slim Bermudas and a silky top with wedges.....argh decisions!

My best guess would be somewhere between "smart casual" and "business casual" - dressing nicely, no jeans or sneakers or tee shirts, but not semi-formal cocktail attire either. Comfortable, but not *too* casual. Because I'm a dress girl, that's the way I would go if it were me because I find semi-casual dresses to often be the most fuss-free option when the dress code is so ambiguous!

Welcome, Heather! I've never heard this designation before, either. It sounds to me that casual is fine, but they don't want people showing up looking like they just mowed the lawn. How about a pretty sundress and wedge sandals?

I suspect the committee deliberately left this open to interpretation so the guys who never dress up or the women who have lived in sweats for the last 10 years won't feel excluded. You might contact a couple of friends and decide together what level of dress you will wear.

My guess would be that they don't want cutoffs and holey jeans, but you don't have to be super-dressy or business-like either. Since it's hot, do you have a nice day dress you like? I think shorts might work too with wedges and a nicer blouse.

Angie, I probably feel best in sheath dresses or pencil skirts, but most of mine are probably too dressy (even though they are mostly just Ann Taylor). Given that it is a thousand degrees here, I could also be fine in shorts! I do heels most of the time with skirts or dresses; I've not done heels with shorts, but I would try wedges.

Who makes up these dress codes? Someone will have to answer for this one. LOL

Ah, and hlcdlc is a pain to type, I realize. It's HeatherB (as there is already a Heather).

Maybe it's their way of saying dressy without cocktail attire?? Is it an evening event? I might do at least dressy casual - better to err on the side of over rather than under dressed.

Maybe the "appropriate" part refers to modesty? Or it might mean "don't dress like a slob"--which is what some people think casual means (not you!).

I don't believe I've ever heard that term used for a dress code! It can be hard enough to decide what casual, smart casual and business casual mean without creating a new code. Do you have any cute, casual summer dresses?

I read a lot but rarely post, so thank you in advance for indulging me. I've learned so much from you all!

I have a 30th HS class reunion in late August and the dress code decided upon by the committee is 'casual appropriate.' What does THAT mean? LOL I can generally dress myself for any occasion, but this is a new one on me.

As this is a small town in southern Indiana, this could mean 'no wife beaters' to 'tone down the sequins.' LOL I might add that a reception hall has been rented, there will be a bar, a band, and food (just light fare). Tickets are $50 a head, so there is some expense involved for those attending; is it too much to ask that people dress well?

What would you suggest I wear? I am petite; 5'3", 120, but busty as heck. Dress? Skirt? Shorts? Argh.

Thanks!!
