Oh, would I ever be so daring as to put liquid starch on the walls? Lol. Might have to wait for my mum to go into a senior home...that would be killer tho.

I'm looking at pictures. I have granny taste, but my reality is madcap eclecticism - every quiz I've taken so far says so. And I'm sooo drawn to green. It's all familiar and comfortable...prob like a grungy moth-eaten sweater.

A bit time intensive, yes, but the results are just about as good as it gets.

Your yellow-flowered fabric might make a lovely wall accent.

Oh what to paint over the yellow?! It's so easy to just 'green' and start looking for one. But I'm toying with the idea of grey. Maybe grey, off white, and red. I've seen some beautiful rooms in this scheme.

But I must say, I don't know about red. I don't mind startling colour, but I don't know that I like energetic colour. I actually dream of covering everything in the same pattern - walls, curtains, upholstery. But one should not do that to 100 yr old plasterwork...

Ok. I've been thinking and thinking, and I think I just hate the yellow that's on the walls. I think I will bite the bullet and paint...and paint the rooms the same colour. The new question is, should I give up green? When I've had my choice, I've always had basically some sort of green. But maybe it's a rut after some 30, 40 years...

Deb, You are AWESOME!

Debbie - that's a thought! Wallpapering the bookcases. That would be fun!

Sadly, unfrumped, those bookcases come with the room, so they stay, but closing off some of the cubbies is a good idea.

...I'm gonna need new shades, broke one today...so maybe that's a place to do something too.

Have to think about what I can switch up furniture wise. Some electrical work needs to be done, which means moving the shelving anyway.

Rachylou-how wide is the opening on that bookcase. I have a friend that had an old bookcase and we used old windows on the front of it as doors. Added textural interest. Even if you do it on some of the openings.
ETA. Have you ever thought about wallpapering the back of the bookcase to tie it into the room.

I still have a lot of the kind of modular white furniture/storage because it is SO practical for crafts, office stuff, and just plain storage space. Moved it into loft and a study. But, warm and romantic it is not.

One think about bookshelves--they're inherently rectangular BUT you can put things in them that are not. So, for example, you have books + lot of cubic/rectangular storage like crates and boxes and squarish baskets, or you could intersperse decorative bowls, plates, figurines, or hatboxes, or Shaker boxes (not suggesting schlocky stuff, but think shapes). Also "natural" items (I love stuff like that on display). That does require giving up some amount of linear book storage space so these items can breathe, though.
You can also sew curtains to draw over bookshelves if you want to add a lot of a specific fabric, such as a pattern, or do a solid fabric for quiet area. Then might have a rounded chair in front of that.

You could tie both rooms together with black and white. Use a modern black and white print for the throw and make pillows out of the same fabric for the sofa. I created a pinterest board with some ideas.

Can you move a bookcase into the bedroom? I think the ghost chairs could look really good on either side of an antique chest or something similar in the sitting room. Then pull in the colors of the rug and sofa with some modern vases set on the chest. Put your darker books and lighter colored decorative items in the bookcase in the bedroom. Buy fabric to make a throw for the bottom of the bed to tie in the colors from the living room. Since the bookcases are white, add white wall décor to make it more cohesive.

Lovely inspiration photos, Maneera! Thanks! I think it will take me a while to find cloth in that Mountain Dew yellow of the walls, but that's the direction I'm most inclined to go in...you don't think it will make the room lopsided to have the sofa disappear like that?

I'm thinking blue actually as an accent colour... because I use it in the other room. But maybe more yellow in the sitting room.

...Sadly, the books are not going anywhere. There used to be more, if you can imagine. I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and cave to my crammed bohemian lifestyle... hysterically, Flea Market Decor magazine, I learned today, has put out a whole magazine devoted to this decorating style.

http://engagedmediamags.com/ho.....ummer-2015

I haven't read what others have said, so I apologize if I'm just repeating stuff!

1) There is ALOT going on. To minimize that, reupholster the sofa in a color similar to the wall. Then the sofa just recedes into the wall and your rug will become the focal point of the room. Alternatively, you can upholster the couch in cream/beige - matches everything!

2) You want to anchor the WHOLE design with one color that repeats over and over. Any shade of yellow would be my guess. Different tones are ok....You want to repeat them in any way you can - pillowcases, cushions, floor mats, art, wall mirrors with colored borders, lighting choices like lampshades etc....for both living area and bedroom.

3) That book rack has a LOT going on. Clear some space. Pack up some books and make some space to proudly display decoratives and collectibles. The display needs "some" thought process behind it.

Use those books creatively elsewhere. Stack them up to become small tables! Here are some inspiration pictures.

Something that might help you visualize...go to an upholstery store and borrow some sample books. They will usually let you borrow them for a short time. Or look up some online fabric stores and look at their samples....but I think the sample book would work better. Think "pattern matching" like you would do with clothing. You ought to get some ideas that way even if you don't end up buying anything from the upholstery place. Also totally agree that getting some of the larger pieces into a neutral solid color will probably help too..

I like the idea of decorative items on a few shelves. Clear some breathing space...the question is, stashing the books. My people are collectors. I will need to choose a book collection and store it safely...hmm...

Rachylou, I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding something, but did you say you have things in your home that you don't love, need, use, etc.? I understand if you need things and can't afford to replace them. But if you have none needed items you don't like, maybe something like a closet clean-out would be useful?
One quick idea-add some decorative items to your bookcases. Maybe something soft or colorful or? There are lots of things that we don't think of that can be on display. It would help to soften the hard lines and maybe help tie the feel of the rooms together. More time consuming-adding molding to the bookcases.

I'm quite torn about having my old fashioned bedroom but desperately want some kind of cohesion from room to room. I'd love to throw everything out and start again, but *ahem* my mother will have to be incapacitated first. And I don't really want to give away even my grandma's bordello lamps, which I have permission to. Lol. I am a person burdened by heirloom, gifted, and just existing furnishings (like the bookcases with books, both of which aren't mine). I also have a lot of art that needs to be hung, half of which is also inherited.

Maybe I can move one of those ghost chairs into my bedroom because I can't see it, lol.

I've seen drop cloth slipcovers all over the net. I'm wondering if that would end up a mismatch too, if it would be too plain. Like, I might need to put some of that canvas in the bedroom too. I have a prie dieu that could be recovered.

What I'd love to do is go overboard and have one material pattern for everything in both rooms...but I'm so lazy and cheap, lol. If I personally can't get the fabric at Jo-Anns I don't want it...

But great ideas everybody! Thanks so much. I have to go play now

Another idea: the drop cloths (canvas) that are sold for painting are not too expensive for a pretty good sized piece of neutral cream colored fabric. Those can be sewn into a slipcover if a plainer sofa is what you might want. ($10.98 for a 6' X9" piece of cream cotton/poly fabric)
In my first apartment, I had a total crazy color scheme because the furniture came with the place and it was goodwill chic....I had a crazy quilt style afghan that was multi color and I threw that over the aqua sofa (red tile floor, gold rug, green walls--you get the picture) and added LOTS of artwork (cheap posters and stuff--I was 19 y/old)--somehow I thought that it worked. Maybe I was delusional 'cause I was so excited to be ON MY OWN!...now that I think about it!

Since you can do slipcovers, I would make the couch a plain neutral and you could tie the rooms together with a few throw pillows in all the colors. I agree if you could mix the furniture up a little it would seem more deliberate. Whenever I am decorating a room, I like to have something that ties it all together, like a print or fabric, and then it seems to work.

I could switch my 70s modern desk and bedside table. Making the sofa a light neutral is also something I've been thinking about... I'm not sure what kind of material. Or making the sofa a solid color at least.

...Art nouveau... That's craftsman, the right period I think. The house is craftsman I'd say. I have to research/think about colours. I think of really dark deep colours when I think art nouveau.

...And speaking of art nouveau and botanicals, I have a print done in the local signature Art Nouveau style of an apple - but it's small. It needs a companion. Still, it's a good green.

Ok, here are some pics from a few months ago when I moved in...

1) sitting room done up for Xmas. The walls are really more of a Mountain Dew yellow.

2) a WIW, but you can see my (messy) bedroom.

3 & 4) fabrics I'm playing around with because I have them.

Lol Mochi.....you make me sound like an expert!

Rachy - I'm finding it hard to imagine this space. Pictures pls! The junk won't bother me....I just want to be able to see colors and textures in the space - walls, flooring, wood finish etc. Two completely mismatched styles can look harmonious if these 'background' elements are in sync. In fact, the colorful rug and the yellow couch could simply become the 'stars' of the room if the rest of the space is in neutrals. Then you can sew new cushion covers for your bed in those accent colors (yellow, red & blue) and there would be some 'flow' between the spaces.

Really need pictures!

Your description is totally making me think of art nouveau. Tiffany Windows, early Liberty prints, William Morris...

Here is a Pinterest board I found with a lot of awesome art nouveau patterns.
https://www.pinterest.com/expl.....u-pattern/

1 is a Tiffany window at the met that I like and that is more or less your color scheme.

2&3 are some Liberty prints from the era.

ETA: but slip covering an entire sofa in Liberty fabric would be very expensive....
