Thank you all who shared your opinions.

The dress went back.

After trying it again and feeling much better in it, it did not pull up actually nor it needed too much readjusting, I had figured out that the old uncomfortable feeling of "am I wearing something that's not cut for *my* frame AGAIN" was too strong to ignore. I cannot believe myself, but back it went.

The funny thing is that I had managed to find a similar one in burgundy in the next shop I walked in and I bought it, but that one is likely to go back too. The color is nowhere near attractive as the blue dress and I've realized that the waist and belt on the blue one were actually very nicely done (except that they were 5 cm/2" higher than I'd want).

If the blue dress is still available when I get my next paycheck and over the next few weeks I decide I must have it, then I'll get it. If it's no longer at the shop, then it wasn't meant to be and something better is waiting for me.

That is precisely why I have this dilemma in the first place. I know it's not 10/10 but I am taking into consideration everything that is right about it, just to make sure I've covered all bases. This can either be the one or the one on the way to The One ...

Beautiful dress on you. I relate to your fit issues and sometimes it's something we "feel" and can't be seen in a photo. So even though the dress looks fab, if it doesn't feel fab I vote return.

This dress looks amazing on you! I don't see a problem with the waistline at all, though I agree with the others that the skinny belt is the perfect look. I think it's a keeper for sure.

I love the dress in #1. Great colour, very flattering cut. But if you are not comfortable with the height of the belt you will probably not wear it very often so should return it and look for something even better.

I really like it on you, and prefer it with the thin belt. But I agree with the others, if you don't feel 100% comfortable, then keep looking.

What happens if you raise your arms above your head, as if you were reaching for something? Does the waist/belt rise up higher, and then stay there? Because that would drive me bananas! I like my clothes to stay in the right place.

Ok, the dress looks high waisted on the model andvi think this may be the design of the dress. It's very lovely on you. I think the thin belt is best. If you are comfortable in it then definitely keep. Angie's suggestion of stirrup leggings sounds great too.

I like the way it fits...I have a dress that fits somewhat similarly -- it's kind of an empire waist, but you can still see the curve of the natural waist and then it skims over the hips. I'm pear-ish, so the silhouette looks similar on me.

Anyway, I think you look lovely, and the color is gorgeous. I vote keep and I think that I like it with both belts.

Ornella this is so often my issue with waistbands too (I am not tall, but am longwaisted).
I ended up getting a coat this year that flared out above my waist and it wasn't what I wanted but Angie gave it the K rating.

Soo - I actually think, like the others, that the skinny belt look looks good, but becuase I know where your coming from I'd encourage you to check out those other options before you make up your mind.

I like it with both belts and the color looks great on you. I could see it with a bolder colored belt too. If you decide to keep, you could have the loops lopped off and that will let you experiment with the belt thickness.

What a great color on you. I have to say that I'm not crazy about the dress on the model. It looks way better on the headless lady (that's what my kids say in stores) and therefore I don't think that it's meant for real people to wear .. hope that makes sense. I'd probaby keep looking if I were you. But do look for something with a similar color ... it looks fab on you!
Hope that helps!

Ditto what the others say. If it feels comfortable, it LOOKS good with a thin belt. But if it doesn't feel right, then pass on it and look for another version. It's such a great dress for you, but it needs to fit right.

I think the belt is hitting the model a bit high, too! I have similar belt issues, and dresses are always hard. I'd like the belt to be under my ribcage, but often it rides up.
FWIW, I like the way the dress looks in photo #1. It has a slightly empire appearance, but it's attractive. And like I said, it seems to fit the model the same way so maybe it's a design feature.

I love it on you and if I saw you wearing this IRL I would think, what a stylish lady! The height of the belt doesn't bother me. I love the color on you and the fit. I also like the wide belt but agree that the daintier one is best.

I've bought *the* dress today and the issues around the waistband are shown on the photos below. If you've missed the previous thread, I had initially tried the dress on and left it at the store because the waistband is, I feel, too high on my frame. The dress is not available in tall size (things rarely are in mainstream stores). Add to that I am short-waisted and it all begins to feels like I might feel too self-contentious wearing this one, which I absolutely want to avoid.

Pro: I love everything about this dress.
Con: I've spent most of my life wearing things that were not cut for my height, so in my post-YLF days I really don't want to overlook any (such) imperfection unless the item is an absolute gem. I don't want to look like I'm wearing something that's not supposed to be worn by someone of my height and build. (This would be a nice answer on Una's thread about fashion fears.)

The photos show:

The dress with its own belt, there are loopholes sewn on.

My left hand is where I'd ideally like the belt to sit, and my right palm shows the distance between the bottom of the bra and the belt.

As suggested, I've tried it with the wide belt and as feared, the original loopholes are showing underneath, so this is a no-no. Plus, the option with the thin belt looks prettier to my eye.

The dress on the model.

The dress on the manequin (regular height).

On a quick inspection this weekend I'm pleased to see there's a rather decent selection of ponte-knit dresses, so it won't be the end of the world if I don't keep this one. Therefore, please be honest and brutal.
