Ronald Reagan was the only president I've ever seen wear a brown suit, for example, and even then it was only for certain events. He normally had the "power suit" down. Carter also wore unflattering and less powerful suits. He favoured mid-grey and navy suits, which just weren't as flattering to him as they sometimes are to those with darker hair and eyes.&nbsp;</p> <p>It would be interesting to see how colour plays out if we have a woman president. Men have such a limited palette from which to choose, and I am not sure if it is a good thing or a bad thing that women have a broader range to choose from. Margaret Thatcher (her politics aside), stuck mainly to blue, and I cannot fault her for that. It was safer than the brights that Clinton goes for, IMO. Sanders did not wear a power suit this time (the shirt was already mentioned), and his tie was weak. While I don't necessarily take issue with the colour , I was not a big fan of the untraditional style of Clinton's jacket. I don't feel that the collar or the shape of the jacket did much to create a powerful silhouette. "Oddly tinted compilation of psychiatric symptoms" almost made me choke on food, I laughed so hard.&nbsp;</p> <p>I don't love Hillary in brights, but I think she's always walking a very fine line between conveying both "approachable" and "intimidating" -- her delivery last night was all about the intimidation, so her garb really need to shout approachability. Despite the easy-target PBS/Big Bird comments, I think it mostly worked.</p> <p>Bernie looks as polished as I've ever seen him (as a native Vermonter, a youngish one at that, I've been watching that man, er, pretty much my whole life). I think his RATE/professorial vibe was absolutely integral to building credibility in his early Vermont campaigns. Remember, he was a Brooklyn boy who went to school in Chicago, totally different world from flannel and cows. If he'd gone for slick and polished when he was younger, I highly doubt his career would've ever taken off. I came away with a very different sense of his words. He looked like an academic to me - one at the sort of university where the professors disappear mid term on DC business. Good suit worn roomy. A lot less genteel than I imagined.</p> <p>Also, I loved Hilary in that chrysanthemum yellow (but did not like the pairing with black pants). I felt the yellow enhanced the direct way she chose to speak and really put her up front.</p> <p>(... as for outcome, I thought the debate was close. I felt like Hilary would win a fist fight with Putin, i.e. she's tough enough for the world stage, but Bernie was less confusing for the home crowd.)</p> <p>(... and I think they both looked like Democrats, lol. Which means I think Republicans invest more in teeth whitening... And someone doing poli sci should do their thesis on this... Jus' sayin'... ) </p>
