I'm not saying it's all bad! I just have a love/hate relationship with them. I have several pieces from Urban Outfitters that I've bought without a second thought because I loved them so much.

I just feel on a whole they are over priced for what they sell. They are a cool clothing store who knows they are a cool clothing store (like you said Maya, you can't find it at ATL) and I feel they price accordingly even when quality is not there.

If the dress goes on sale and is still available in my size I'll probably still take a chance. I just can't bring myself to pay $69, but I'm also pretty cheap.

Nicole, I am waiting for something to go on sale there.....I will grumble with you about the shipping.....but alas, Quality issues abound everywhere.

The gal who bought that dress could have received a defective one....you should give it a try. As long as it isn't final sale....:D

I dunno, I see this problem everywhere, possibly related to cotton prices. I wouldn't really single them out. Angie even blogged a while back about the overall decline in quality in the industry.

FWIW, I just bought 2 silk tops there (which I returned for reasons unrelated to quality) and also own two silk dresses.

The shorts I recently got there by Fletcher & Lyell are also quite nice. Thick material, secure buttons. They are a little wrinkly but I guess that's to be expected with cotton.

I also tried a knit skirt by the Furies that Angie featured in her midi skirt post, but it was too long on me. I wish it had been a bit shorter because the fit, weight, and drape of the fabric were divine.

Sorry the dress doesn't fit the bill, but sometimes it's more about the design than anything. I could always go to Esprit or ATL for a cotton dress, but would it look like that? No doubt that finding natural fabrics at a decent price point with interesting designs is HARD. I have been struggling with this for years and have been making some progress bit by bit, but I had to invest a lot of time into it and as Angie always advises, I left no retail stone unturned.

Their products are really inconsistent. I've gotten some nice things there over the years but I agree for the most part it is fast fashion at it's worst.

I hear you about the flat-rate shipping. Last Christmas I found a really cute wall-hanging necklace rack at UO which I knew my sister would love. It cost just over $20 and the idea of paying a shipping fee that was almost 50% of the purchase price really didn't sit well. I love my sister so I went ahead and bought it (extortionate shipping fee and all!), but if I'd had my eye on an item for me I probably would not have gone through with a purchase.

Agreed, I'll shop the sales pretty frequently there, I'm not about to pay their full price for their stuff.

When I lived not in the middle of nowhere I used to go check out their sale racks because I noticed my size was hitting the sale racks a lot in Seattle!

That would be a very cute dress if better made. If I wore it I worry that it would come undone while wearing at a public outing or something -- worse than a Janet Jackson moment.

I wear a lot of lower price points too, but I still expect reasonable quality in the item -- it doesn't have to look cheap just b/c I paid so. I have some good enough quality H&M, Old Navy and Joe Fresh (a Canadian grocery store brand designed by the former designer at Club Monaco). It looks reasonable in comparison to mid-priced brands.

Yeah. Don't get me wrong, i wear cheap things (hello, Forever 21.). But if your quality is going to be crap you better price it that way.

I went to a grad party last weekend and someone was wearing this dress which i had admired online as a kind of knock off of the Marc Jacobs dress Michelle Obama wore...but even just glancing at it, it came off as poorly constructed in person, the color stripes didn't line up on the seams the bottom hem was all messed up because of it. i'm not an expert at sewing by any mean but come on!

We just got a B&M UO closeby and the 3 times I bought something from them, I returned it the next day or so. I like some of the styles but the quality is ...for lack of a better word... "crap".
I did order a Fletcher by Lyell cardigan online about a year ago, and it was a bit different then it appeared online in the photos. I kept it b/c return shipping from Canada to the US was too steep. Still have it but the buttons have started falling off. And it is a bulky acrylic blend, so I don't really wear it.
I had high hopes for the Fletcher line at UO, but the quality really disappoints. I like the Lyell website (I think she went out of business though, which makes me wonder why UO is carrying Fletcher by Lyell?!?) and was excited to see a lower price-point version of her designs.

Why must you make adorable things yet make them crappy quality and still price them high? Also -- $10 flat rate shipping? What's up with that.
But $69 for polyester and reviews that say it's super flimsy and rips easily? *pouts in a corner*
