Then, I tie a scarf round and round my neck to make sure no cold gets in! Earlier this season I hemmed and hawed over a lovely Theory coat marked down 75% that crisis crossed over the chest and had two tiny snaps at the neck. It really was intended to be worn open in a kind of waterfall of lovely pale grey and navy blue wool and cashmere. I imagined waiting for the train in the still dark morning, and swirling snow, and took a pass on the coat. This style is not for me. When I see things like this, I just assume it's for the people who live in the southern part of the U.S. What gets frustrating is when it seems like a very large portion of the offerings are of this type, and you can't find a decent winter coat to save your life. Of course, blazers can be worn open, and the same goes for many other kinds of jackets and thin coats. Items like these are often worn either indoors (year round) or outdoors in spring, summer and fall, and perhaps even outdoors in a mild winter climate. But if you have to be outside for more than a few minutes in freezing temperatures, you need a real winter coat that can be closed. But I'd always want to have the option to close it, if I travel or if it becomes unusually cold. I grew up in Florida, and I never owned a coat or jacket that didn’t close - unless I gained weight, in which case I would eventually bring myself to say adieu. I make several Florida trips a year, but even when we eventually retire here, I can’t imagine buying a coat that doesn’t close. Cardigans, yes. Casual jacket, maybe. But a coat... no. If I'm going straight from the car into a building, I could see wearing it. I'm in west Michigan and we get a lot of cold and snow. It wouldn't be worn on the coldest days though. The MK coat I bought at NAS this year doesn't close. Of course I'm not going to wear it on the coldest days, but for someone who wants a variety of coat styles, I don't think ALL my coats need to have a closure. This one is more for fashion than strictly function. I usually add a scarf when heading out anyway, which helps eliminate the chill. I run cold do sm likely to WEAR a coat when others would not, and then adjust ( open/ close). Such as for chilly mornings. But I definitely need the option.
