I can't comment on hair color strategies (makes for fascinating reading though), but now I am really excited about Louise getting plum streaks.

Thanks for chipping in with your experiences. Fathenry - I have never heard of using a cap at home. I do find that people often say that they thought I was a natural blonde so I can't be doing such a bad job.

However I have decided to follow Jenny's example and am booked in for partial foils on mon!

I've been a fake redhead for over 30 years and for most of that time I did it myself or at home with assistance. My husband or a friend would do the regrowth for me every 6 weeks. Now that the regrowth is significantly more gray my hairdresser does it. She had told me I was doing fine by myself and that she'd tell me when I needed to let her take over. That happened a couple of years ago. Now I have to go back every three weeks for touch ups, but I won't let go of my color.

I currently get reddish streaks (going for plum next time!) put in my hair every 8 weeks. I wouldn't feel confident doing a permenant colour at home only a semi permenant and then I don't notice the difference. kerrie does a great job and I'm happier to stump up the £65 every 8 weeks and love my hair x

I do my hair at home, here is what works for me:

1) Stay within a few shades of natural color
2) Use demi permanent color
3) pull hair through cap
4) do only a small amount/fine pieces

And most important:
5) I have a high tolerance for mistakes

I know that it isn't as consistent as a pro, but I also don't think others notice as much as you might think. It really depends on how "perfect" it needs to be to make you happy!

I do my own roots at home once a month, using the same brand, same level. Once every three months I have what's called a partial foil, having the top layers around my head highlighted. This camouflages any discrepancy (horizontal stripes where the color is slightly different from touch-up to touch-up) and saves me a humongous heap of money.

I used to have my roots done at the salon too, religiously and at very nice salons with color professionals. With very light blonde it seems nigh to impossible to get the color absolutely perfectly even every time. The highlighting is wonderful for adding dimension and fudging over unevenness.

I dyed my hair at home for years and thought it looked fine. Started going to a professional about 2-3 years ago. When I compare pictures now versus then, I don't know what I was thinking! I did not look at all like I thought I did on my own, but I love it now.

I can spot a kitchen beautician haircolor a mile away")

Seriously Anne, You know I am going to recommend a professional for professional looking results and quality products. The at home products are just aren't up to standards, and I absolutely feel they are not kind to hair, some are downright horrible if they contain metallic dye's.

Do whatever you budget allows for, but if able, see a pro:)

I highlight my hair blond by a professional. When I went dark or red I would do it myself, but not for lighter.

I'm quite naturally blonde but do have the top bits highlighted for texture and choppy appeal (about 10 foils). I have it done professionally and that's the route I will continue to go. It has been expensive, but flop proof. My hair stylist knows what she's doing.

I do mine myself... but I use a red/brown color and it's a non permanent. I would think blonde is much harder. And, I never do the strand test eiither Actually, I take that back... I did it once when I was unsure of using a color and I am SO glad that I did. I would have been in tears. My son ended up using it to be a punk-rocker for halloween. I kind of liked the color on him and tried to talk him into doing it again actually

I have been dying my hair blond for about 14 years now and waver between doing it myself and getting it done at the hairdressers. Currently I am doing it myself but I am a bit annoyed that I can't seem to match the colour very well. This may be because I have never tried the "strand test" that the packet recommends (too impatient).

I have a hair appt soon and am trying to decide whether I should go back to having the pros doing it. It is certainly a much more expensive option.

What do you do?
