I think it helps that the skirt is longish. Reminds me of some of the very chic looks that comedian Alli Wong wore in the absolutely terrible film “you’ll always be my maybe.”

Thanks everyone!

UF, I agree. I have worn this skirt with stompy boots but not sneakers. I love boots so much I like to make the most of boot season (which is short here). Plenty of time for sneakers in summer :)

Anchie, I do think both outfits would be office appropriate here (unless the office was super conservative). I was trying for a version that didn’t feel office-y, IYKWIM. I think with heels, blouse, jacket and satchel it would skew a lot more office-y.

Bijou, thanks for the concern. I am being super careful - the only indoor gatherings I’ve been to with anyone outside my household is with my mum. And I’m careful about distancing. This virus is an ongoing challenge. Sigh. But that’s good news that you’ll get to spend more time with your family. I’m sure you’ll be the most glamorous WFHer ever :)

Angie, I do like a bit of steampunk! Still hunting for that perfect waistcoat

So lovely, and not office-y. Perfect way to SYC.
If you wanted to take it a step further, if you own any much looser sweaters -even from another “role” such as sweatshirt, that you would wear untucked, and short stompy boots, or maybe even sneakers, that also gives a interesting contrast with a form- fitting pencil skirt. I think you will look polished no matter what you wear!

Brooklyn, you have worked your magic yet again, these are two fabulous looks on gorgeous you. The boots make these look too fashion forward for a conservative office, so not just a corporate skirt. I do love the Lauren Bacall vibe, you really pull off this look so well.

I am soon to change jobs and will increasingly be working from home, so you are providing me with great inspiration on how to change things up and still wear and enjoy some favourite work clothing. The big bonus is that I will be spending more time with my son and Margot.

I hope things are going well for you and I’m so glad you are able to safely catch up with your Mother. Anne and I are currently lucky as the West is relatively free from covid, but we all know how quickly that situation can change.

Thanks Robin. I love the buttons on the skirt. It’s what attracted me to it. I tried to repeat the round button motif in the first outfit with the sleeves of the jumper.

Wow, I love both versions! The flat boots work really well with the skirt. I think the buttons also de-corporatize the skirt a little bit too, especially with more casual tops.

I like pencil skirts but I think they skew corporate. Especially solid black versions. I’ve worked from home since 2019 so I’ve had no need for business looks for quite a while. Some of my nicest clothes are currently languishing in my closet. I know many of you are having a similar experience in 2020.

After reading Angie’s post on wearing a relaxed pencil skirt in summer I challenged myself to wear my favourite winter pencil skirt casually. It is solid black, woven and lined. It has buttons and a small side slit that give it bit of a Lauren Bacall/femme fatale factor that I like, but still reads quite conservative (to my eye).

I wore these outfits to have dinner with my mum (+ distancing) at her home.

Outfit 1: I wore the skirt with a sweater (we call it a jumper), which I think is less “business like” than a shirt or blouse, and fishnets. The bag is a cross body, which I think is more casual than a satchel. The boots are almost flat, which to me reads more casual than heels.

Outfit 2: Similar combination. This time with a floral mesh top layered over a rust top, which I think is a little dressier than a jumper. I still felt the mesh, fishnets and lace up boots were sufficiently subversive of a classic workwear look.

What do you think?

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed wearing this skirt “out of office”. Thanks to Angie for giving me the impetus to get more out of my wardrobe during these strange and anxious times.

Take care everyone
