Somehow it helps to have information and know what to pay attention to, even if she is too young to do all the tests and treatments that could make sense in the future. Keep good notes and carry on; you folks have been so tenacious in getting answers. I know how it hurts to wonder and worry as a mother; glad you have a good team, Thistle. All the best to your family.

Too bad that she inherited your allergies and sensitivities. It must be much saner, though, to not have to eliminate so many things from your diet anymore!

At least you are already very experienced in how to protect and avoid environmental triggers. How old before little ones can take anti-histamines? Do you take them? I do for ragweed and what seems to be a growing list of other seasonal pollens and such. This year I started taking meds in April when I usually start sometime in June - hoping it's just a bad year and not a change with me.

Our best guess is it is environmental. She's too little to test for or to treat. But yeah, I know what she's going through. Trees, grass, mold and dust are my major triggers. Oh, and ragweed. Big time rag weed. And scents, and dyes, and . . . Ugh, and this is why I wanted him to give her his lack of allergies!

So glad she's feeling better and you guys are starting to get answers. So it was passed through your breast milk, or more of an environmental reaction? Or both?

My DH has allergies (including a major one to cats) and asthma, and we always joked that if we had kids we'd have to select for my non-allergy genes. Of course, strokes, high blood pressure, and cancer also run in my family, so I'm no great prize genetically either.

Oh, Thistle, I'm so glad that you were finally able to get some answers that were more than just a shot in the dark. Everyone these days seems to have an opinion about how to handle allergies, but if DD2's symptoms mimic yours, at least you have some personal insight into how to mitigate her symptoms. And kids do change. My sister had severe skin allergies as a child, but they became much less severe as she grew older.

Thistle, that's excellent news. I had noticed on your recent pictures that your DD's skin was looking perfect now. What a relief, you've really been through the mill with all this.

So, we never really did get to the bottom of DD2s "eczema".

So, after cutting all the major allergens from my diet, we finally started to see a change. This was also around the time it stopped snowing and started raining, so everything was moister anyway. And, we'd been using Aquaphor to moisturize her religiously. This was also the time I finally was able to get DD2 in to see a dermatologist.

She told us it wasn't eczema at all, it was hives, and showed us how as she touched her unaffected skin, you could see a histamine reaction.

So, I took her to an allergist. The allergist agreed it was hives, and said there might have been eczema there once, but it was now all hives. She said it did NOT look food related. She didn't want to run any tests due to the high risk of a false positive. Apparently, false positives on food allergy tests are common and a positive has to be correlated to an actual reaction to food. DD2 is way too small to do that, and while she has started solids, this isn't a good path.

So, she had me start to add back all the food I had taken away - one food a week and wait for a reaction. If none, add back another. I have added everything back except peanuts to date.

Her best guess is DD2 inherited my allergies, and that we can correlate. A couple of times when we went out for walks and I ended up with a bad reaction such as hives, so did DD2. *sigh* I told DH his one job was to make sure any kids we had didn't get my awful allergies (he has none).
