I do, Anne. It was one of those linguistic differences that always made me and my college mates giggle when I would forget and say it. That and they always made me say "banana." For some unknown reason it would always send them into fits of laughter.

Alecia *grin*. We do know what you mean when you say that. And I am guessing from your Aussie experience you know what we mean when we do? (not that is an expression I personally use, I hasten to add)

Well, DD certainly has the ylf group rooting (cheering for the Aussies on the forum) for her. It's great that you were able to have the experience together.

I commend your daughter on looking for a job or volunteer work. Either will be wonderful as she builds a resume.
Tanya, about the blouse you posted, when you wash it, do you need to iron the ruffles? It is very cute.

Maya - yes, I think you are right; I know my first job (not counting babysitting) was at 15 - worked as a cashier at a drugstore. Times back then weren't so tough and jobs for teens too young for a driver's license were easy to be had. It was only when I graduated college that the economy faltered - and it took me a year to land my first professional job.

She did say she would wear the shirt to school - but with jeans. The slacks are too dressy for school. But, she said she'd get plenty of use out of the outfit over the holidays, and it doesn't hurt to have one or two "other than jeans" outfits in her closet. It was cool to see that she'd really thought it all out - as if it was her very own money she was spending, and not mine!

Yes Tanya that is the shirt - except the stripes are a bit bolder and less subtle. I personally loved it in the teal, but she zeroed right in on the stripes instead.

Can't wait to see you again!! So excited about tomorrow!! I've been too busy to breathe lately... so I am very much looking forward to a relaxing get-together that has nothing at all to do with work!!!

P.s. she may show up at the end of our get-together... depends on how her plans go tomorrow. She is contemplating taking the bus down - dressed in her new outfit and with resumes in hand - and going door to door on Newbury, job-hunting. I told her if she does so, she can meet up with me and Nicole for a ride home. But, she has to get her homework done FIRST!!

I think I also know that shirt Shiny, since I believe I very recently got in black. Is it this one?

Her whole outfit sound very cute and I am sure she looks incredible in it. You are such a great mom. Good luck to her in whatever she decides to do (and see you tomorrow :).

I think I know the Express shirt you're talking about and it is very cute. I bet DD looks amazing and she is so lucky to have a stylish momma such as yourself to help her out.

It's a hard time for teenagers looking for work. I know people my age (mid to upper 20's) are taking jobs that normally go to teenagers just to bring in some extra cash. Seems like the age requirement has gone up since um, back in my day.

Either way, she'll get a ton of use out of her clothes and I'm sure she can dress them down somehow. Good luck to her regardless of what she chooses to do. Good for her for taking initiative!

My DD16 has decided it's time to get her first job. She's thinking of starting with a seasonal holiday position in retail. She has her heart set on a particular store (leaving out the name for her privacy).

This weekend I helped her put together a resume, then we hit the mall to find her an appropriate interview outfit - something conservative but still youthful - she doesn't need an interview suit, but she thinks she needs something a step up from jeans.

We ended up at Express - partly because I have some coupons but also because she has always had good luck at that store. With coupons plus buy-one, get-second-free plus discounts, she chose:

1) Charcoal grey Editor slacks, that fit her like a charm;
2) A pin-stripe, crisp cotton button down shirt that has adorable ruffles.... if you've been in Express, you have probably seen this adorable shirt!!
3) A cobalt blue vest to go over.

(and also a sweater dress!)

I helped by fetching different sizing - but with exception of suggesting the addition of the cobalt vest - the other choices were all hers! I was impressed with her good taste. She looks spectacular in this outfit - it's tasteful, conservative, but has flair - of which she definetly already has plenty!

This is the kid who makes her own clothes out of old tee shirts and dresses in what I would label "euro" and often edging into goth. For example, for our shopping trip she had on a black Amanda Palmer tee shirt, black and white striped skinnies from H&M, black and white checked scarf from Paris (borrowed from me), and black high top converses.

So the transformation into Editor dress slacks with crisp cotton pin-striped shirt was dramatic for this mom to see........ yet the ruffles were really all "Her." She strikes just the right note - professionally appropriate - but with her own personality shining through.

Meanwhile, she asked around at the mall, and was depressed to discover most stores require you to be 18. She's two years shy. The clerks at Express told her to try the grocery store as a good first-time job. She likes this idea, but was despondant because she wanted to wear the new clothes. I told her "go ahead and wear that outfit to apply - shows respect!"

I also cautioned her not to get too disappointed or discouraged if she doesn't land a job, because with the economy the way it is, there are lots of people older and with experience who may need the job more than she does.

Then ....

We came home to discover a letter in the mailbox inviting her to apply for this year-long teen volunteer program!! She has to write three essays and it's a highly selective program, but she is excited.....

She doesn't want to work for the $ (although that wouldn't be bad)... she wants to work for the experience; so she is quite fine with volunteering.

And now she has the interview outfit - whether it's a paid or volunteer position!

Wish her luck!!

"Proud momma"
