Bella posted a link to the academichic post on a year abroad. A few weeks ago, one of them asked for advice for a several week trip to Europe for a relative here: http://www.academichic.com/200.....-question/. There is lots of info in the comments about packing tips.

Sounds like a great trip.

Hi, happylife. I also live in London and agree with scorpio- it will likely be a warm summer here. In fact, it's usually a lot hotter here than most people realise. (ie, it's not always grey and rainy!)

As for clothes, I think a mix of jeans/cardigans/light sweaters for cooler days and evenings is a good idea, along with some dresses/skirts/tanks for the hotter days. Flat, comfy walking shoes are important, too- she will end up doing a lot of walking, as it's the best way to see the city. I wear ballet flats or my gladiators around most days, as do many of the girls in London. A more covered-up shoe or boot would be good for cooler weather, but I don't think a wellie or "winter"-type boot will be necessary.

I also agree that she definitely needs a good umbrella. Make it a lightweight one that can stand being blown inside out a couple times, and that will fold small enough to fit in her purse. I tend to have a preference for brightly coloured ones in the summer, as no one wants to see a sea of black umbrellas in July. :(

I will warn you/her about overpacking, though. If she is at all into clothes (and comes with a bit of spending money) she'll most likely want to shop a lot, as the fashion here for young people tends to be much more exciting then in North America. When I studied in the UK during my 3rd year of university (I am from Canada, and moved back here after I'd graduated) I bought loads of new things because I was so inspired by all the style around me. So I guess the old adage about packing holds true: take half as many clothes, and twice as much money!

Hi, i'm from London and the Weather people are saying we're going to have a pretty hot Summer.......for once (LOL!).
Basically, she should pack these kinds of items:

A couple of Tank Tops, T-shirts, a couple prs of Shorts, Lightweight Jeans, a Summer Dress or 1 or 2 short Skirts (if she wears them), a pair of Sandals, a pair of Casual flats, a pair of dressy shoes/Boots (for going out in the evening), a long sleeved Cardigan, a short sleeved Cardigan or Shrug and a nice Leather or Denim Jacket.

I think it will probably rain a few times while she's here (as it normally does..... even in the hottest of weather), so she should definitely pack an umbrella &/or a lightweight Mac.

Hope that helps!

Happylife,

Good luck to your daughter! It'll be a great experience for her. Do you think you'll go visit her while she's there?

I've never been to London in the summer, so I'll let the others give you tips on what to pack. I did want to give one piece of practical advice, though, and I hope I'm not going to hijack or put a damper on the thread. I always advise parents of children going abroad to make sure they have passports of their own just in case. My daughter was in a very serious bus accident when she was studying in Germany and my passport had expired. Fortunately, even though she was taken by ambulance to the ER, her injuries were minor. She was able to communicate in German with the hospital staff and did fine handling it all on her own.

Sorry for the horror story. I just think it's worth the peace of mind having a passport if you don't have one already. Overall, it was a wonderful experience
and she would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

Hope she has a wonderful summer! It sounds like a great opportunity.

Did you see S. 's post on what she packed for a year in Germany?
http://www.academichic.com/200.....d-edition/
Of course, since your daughter is going only for a summer, she would need significantly fewer clothes and for summer weather only, but I think it would give you a good starting point.
For London, one thing I would add is probably more shoe and outerwear selection for rainy weather and an umbrella!:)
Also, depending on where she is interning she might need a couple of suits and a larger selection of business casual clothes.

She will be taking 2 classes at a university and doing an internship and we don't know where yet.

What kinds of things would be great to have as a student?

Thanks!
