There's a very good woman who does alterations at fair prices, though she's in Bethesda, Maryland. It suited me when I was seconded during my public health studies at JH to the National Institutes of Health, but if you're looking for someone on the Virginia side of town it might be less convenient. Rose is also a nifty dressmaker. She's in the 4000's on the E. West highway, just off the beltway. (Hope she's still there, she certainly was a couple of years back, when she invisibly mended a nasty rip very quickly 'cos I was only in town for four days, and I needed that dress!) Good luck, whoever you pick!

I have had great success with the Nordstrom in house tailors (Dulles Town Center and the Rack) My wedding outfit was actually made by a former Nordstrom tailor so I think they have great standards. For non-Nordies items I use my drycleaner for easy things like zipper repairs but I've been using the Dulles Town Center Custom Tailor (great reviews on Angie's List. They are pricier, but for real tailoring they are great.

Sunita, you might want to try my tailor. His name is Sammy Lee and he's in D.C. on Capital Hill. Best you go there in person. He's at 615 Pennsylvania Ave. SE, 2nd floor. The shop is not much to look at—in fact, it hasn't changed in the 25 years I've known Mr. Lee—but his work is impeccable. His prices are high, but you get what you pay for. He's a taciturn gentleman, but very dear.

Sunita, I found my tailor/seamstress via the reviews on Yelp. People were writing about how she could make wedding gowns from scratch.

Might be worth a try.

Easier than moving to Canada to live near Sveta's mom...

I have a growing pile of items that need alterations, and am in need of a good tailor.

My drycleaner (who has hemmed pants for me) seems to think I need them shorter than we agreed to, so I am never quite satisfied and end up wearing flats/lower heels to compensate. Drives me batty. So I don't trust her to do more complicated things like jacket sleeves, waist alterations etc.

I bought a few things at the NAS that will need basic hemming, and plan to give the Tysons Nordies alteration service a try. Has anyone tried them?

Other recommendations to share? I live in N. VA, very close to DC.

Thanks!
Sunita
