Just lovely Ornella. I'm with you (and E) on the belts. They can be nice sometimes, but I also feel they are no longer a "must do". The shape of the dress highlights your waist just fine all by itself. Looking at these dresses, I can really see the case for buying simple, unadorned things with clean lines and then accessorizing them (or not) differently over the seasons. What a great, classic shape!

Hi Ornella, I too really like the last pic with red on red. It has an almost abstract feel to it. And the flat leather boots contribute a certain action-ready ruggedness, less dainty than the pumps.

Oh, just seen that I've missed this one to date! I was also wondering as er Angie said, generally speaking, why I like the curent versions better now? I loved the older versions then, and I consider them still beautifull today, but if I had to choose, I would choose the 2014 versions, for sure. Is our eye and fashions sense always wanting something new, or what? BTW I can undesrand the love for these (both) dresses. They are classic pieces, the ones which are like a canvas on which you can change accents to create new looks accrding to your needs and moods.:-)

How neat that 3 years later, the dress is still a workhorse. Now that is a super purchase! And like Angie I also enjoy the latest version of each look, maybe because it is always the freshest twist with the item.

Great dress! I think I prefer it with the belt too, but today's outfit with all the reds would probably be too busy with a belt.

I really resonated with your thoughts on belts, especially

In a way, once I felt I knew what to do, it was easier to let go.

and

I accepted that waist is not the most important thing about my outfit

When I was younger, I used to feel my waist was the only feminine thing about me, so it was very important to not obscure it. As I've gotten older & more comfortable in my skin, there's no longer an urgency around waist definition. Now I use belts mainly for proportions or colour mixing or 'third piece'/outfit polishing reasons, rather than to make sure my waist looks as small as possible.

Elizabeth :: I actually still wear belts with these dresses a lot, mostly in low contrast shades as they do define my waist better, you're right. I also mostly leave belts for dressier stylings nowadays. Purple? Next week most likely :-)

E :: yes, I was crazy about belts when I discovered what they did for me. Pear with rectangle tendencies, just learning what (not) to wear, I wanted to crack that mystery of playing around what I hadn't been given by Mother Nature. In a way, once I felt I knew what to do, it was easier to let go. Plus (I haven't contributed much on your thread), belts can be fussy to/on me, especially if they slide around and need constant keeping in place. Now I'm much more comfortable with the idea of waist surrendering, you're right, but more because I accepted that waist is not the most important thing about my outfit and I prefer comfort above everything.

I covet those dresses so much! I'm going to try to learn to sew this year just so I can make myself dresses like that, since I can never find them in the right length/colour/fabric.

But less about me, more about you. That red on red on red of today's outfit is just brilliant! I wouldn't have thought it would work, but it really, really does. I'm so glad those dresses have lived up to their cost & are still going strong several years & I'm sure many years later. No wonder they make you want to hug your wardrobe; I love them in every version.

Have you noticed there's always a belt involved in your older outfits, whereas in your newer ones you seem to prefer leaving belts off? I've cut down on my belt wearing too (at my natural waist at least; I've added belts on trousers with the semituck!), though I probably still wear them more frequently than you, and I wonder if it's a reflection of the increased prominence of waist surrendering in the fashion world, so it's easier to let go of a very defined waist, or something else.

This dress is fabulous, I didn't realize you'd had it for so long! Shame about the blue....

Re styling, I have to admit, I think I prefer it with at belt. Your waist seems sort of lost in today's version. Not something I'd have noticed if I hadn't had something to compare it to, I've certainly never noticed this when you've worn it before. But other than that, I like everything else!

Day 4 of the very first WIW round I did in 2011 was when I, with great trepidation, introduced my red dress to the community. I say that because I bought it much before I started consulting the community about my purchases. I was hoping it would get positive comments.

Well, a lot of red dress love later on this and subsequent WIWs I snatched its purple sibling (worn in 2012 outfit) because I knew that one too would be a workhorse and it was a no brainer. I still wonder whether I should have pounced when the cobalt version appeared in the shops too, but a combination of trying to be sensible finances-wise (the dresses were the most expensive items I bough by then) and my still undiscovered love for the beautiful shade of blue I passed that one.

Fast forward to this day and age, both red and purple dresses are going strong, getting a lot of wear, not showing signs of tear and fill me with that great feeling of wishing to hug my wardrobe.

ETA: Btw, all my 2011 and 2012 outfits were worn to the office, hence rather dressed up looks and different footwear in most of the old outfits. At this stage of my life things are a lot more casual.

The verdict for Day 4?
