Unless they are styled with combat boots, I feel that knee socks are best left to elementary-aged children in school uniforms. Sorry to be a downer. The outfit would look great with tights instead of socks!

I love knee socks, but do think they're a bad idea for date night if your boyfriend is not hardcore geek (and I mean Pirate geek, not tech geek) or punk. I think you want to look like a grown woman in general on dates.

Ah, but even after a few years date night should still be special. Just saying. Not that you have to wear the socks to make it special lol

I don't think the socks would ever be my thing, unless they were under jeans or pants, but there is probably a way you could make it work. I think you would need a top & skirt with more weight - maybe a wool wrap or plaid wool skirt and a tweedy sweater. I'm thinking some sort of "back to school" vibe might make it work.

I think one part of the problem is that the skirt is too lightweight, or at least it looks that way in the picture.

Thanks everyone!

I've been with my boyfriend for a few years now so it's not a new date, and he might like the look, haha, but I'd rather where something that I feel more comfortable in :)

I don't have any suitable tall boots at the moment, but if I do buy a pair I'll try again with the socks!

Sorry but I'm not a big fan of this look. I think tights would look more sophisticated rather than school girlish. Save the socks to wear with jeans, pants or boots.

There's a way to wear them for sure, but like this, for a date they might read as a little too much of a statement, and a not clearly defined statement as well.

There's a way to wear them for sure, I like the tall boots idea.

I try to be extra sensitive with people I don't know well, or who don't know me well. Some people like to stand out and some are embarrassed by anything that makes them feel conspicuous. There are wonderful, sweet, excellent people in both camps.

I think the question is what would your SO think of them? After all, date night is kind of about each other, and he might really like the Catholic school girl look ;)
Personally, I think they are cute with tights and would wear them that way if I were you.

Thanks for all your comments! Don't worry crutcher, I did want honest opinions and I felt too that they didn't quite work..! At least I got that confirmed no worries, I'm putting them far far away!

I think they have potential layered over tights: maybe scrunch them a bit? They'd definitely work peeking out of taller boots. Their texture & the little buttons are really fun. They're not chic, as Crutcher points out, so it really depends on your style goals. :)

I have difficulties styling knee high socks too, especially since I prefer full skirts. It's very challenging to avoid the school girl look! Which is a shame, as they can be so practical in winter. Alasse wears knee high socks quite a bit, and they always look very. Che doesn't post her outfits at the moment, but her old WIW posts are probably still available if you want some inspiration.

I hate to be negative nan but I just don't find the chic vibes here that I am sure you are looking for...The knee socks just look too kiddish...
Why don't you try tights with a black sweater tied around the shoulder?..something that says young woman on the go with interest...
Again, sorry if this seems negative but I would want you to look as stylish as you want to...smile..

I have on old pair of super cute knee-socks that I've basically never wore (how do you even wear those? Does anyone wear them anymore?)

I have a date night coming up with my boyfriend (dinner and a movie! That's about all you can do in this town... But it's ok!), so I thought it could be fun to try something new.

But I don't think this works. At all! Please let me know your HONEST opinions! I think I should just put the socks in the back of my wardrobe and look at them from time to time, but never wear them.

(You'll have to imagine some makeup and styled hair)

I tried them with tights and without. Don't think either helps. (Also a closeup to show how cute they are!)
