Ha, Claire! But actually, now that you mention it, I wonder if it would resonate with practical, analytical guys more than it would for most women? Let me know what he thinks!

So cute Nancy! I loved it. I have a very good single male friend I should tie down and make watch this. I'm sure there's a gal out there for him, but she'll be one in a million for sure.

I met my wonderful husband online. No analysis, just pure gut instinct. But I am very interested to watch the TED talk. After my experience, I'm so curious how other people feel about online dating.

An excerpt from Webb's book:
http://www.slate.com/articles/.....nline.html

I hadn't heard of her before your post, Mochi. What about the talk appeals to you?

Bf and I recently attended the wedding of a friend I met through OkC, who'd been a supposed 97% match for me but never an option to date. Webb would probably point out flaws in OKC's algorithm, and I'd probably agree.

Zap, she doesn't seem like the most spontaneous, fly-by-the-seat-your-pants type of gal. But that was kind of her point, to gather, collate, and apply hard data in a way that ended up working for her in at least narrowing down candidates and pinpointing what she wanted. Rachylou, she discusses in detail the very points you're making about the 99.9%.

Would I try it if I were in her shoes, in my thirties and having had a string of ended relationships? I don't know...But anyway, I would give her book, the expanded story here, a try!

I think she has a great sense of humour, very deadpan. I love her comments at the end where she says you can apply her ideas to anything in life not just dating. Thanks for sharing.

It does sound interesting. I like that sort of thing, but I confess to spending all my online time here on YLF. What sort of things did she say?

You know what I find interesting (but have never checked out) is OkCupid! They ask you all sorts of off-the-wall questions (or so I hear), correlate seemingly non-dating related data, and then match people that way.

I mean the things we think make for compatibility often aren't. Or, put another way, I don't know how an analytical approach can work. Like everyone says they want someone "funny, smart, AND good looking" - but right there you've cut out 99.99% of the dating pool and reduced your practical odds to 0%. I'm sure no one really wants that.

I think they've branched out, rachy.

I realize also that it's a 17-minute talk (TED tends to run long), so not everyone's cup of tea...and I don't think I'd end up best friends with this woman either (not for any unlikeability--she's just so...analytical). But it was highly entertaining!

It ultimately worked for this woman! She ended up writing a book about her approach. I'm on the fence about whether I should spam this out to some friends, but it's an interesting talk.
