Ooh, a Crown! Thanks Angie. I hope it’s in the Byzantine style The asymmetrical midis are my favourite style of skirt, especially that Carven one.

Brooklyn, thank you for another in-depth breakdown of your newest theme. You articulate each one so brilliantly; it's been really helpful to read through your comments that list colors, textures, elements, and vibe for each one. I can see the crossover between your other themes, as well. It's as though you're a fashion house and all the clothes are from three collections - all are clearly YOU, but in venn diagrams with each other - it's such a fantastic approach. It is inspiring me as I'm experimenting with my own themes, avatars, vibes, and whatnot.

Thanks Jussie and Taylor.

Thanks Vix. Ooh, femme fatale. I wish I’d come up with that title! I’m going to take the liberty of adding that to the “vibe” I’m after with Dark Passage. I’ve seen your posts about your triple monikers and I do think we are on the same wavelength. I doubt I will be able to settle on a single theme or persona. Recently I’ve found myself looking at steampunk and Victorian outfits with great interest (don’t ask!). I don’t want another theme so I’m trying to work out a way of using this interest in the BJ and DP themes. Specifically lace up ankle boots. And maybe a bustle skirt (again, don’t ask!). I’m happy to continue with these themes as long as they make me happy but I expect they will change over time.

ChristieIJ and SarahD8, thanks for the feedback. I think I started thinking about this approach when I did Sterling’s 30x30 challenge. I tried to focus on wearing the same items in different ways. While I totally support wearing items repeatedly, I crave variety and that often results in boredom buying. So the challenge focussed me more on styling and mix and matching.

Take this dress in pic 1. I posted it as a Byzantine Jewel outfit because of the coin necklace, gold cuff and blingy bag. It seemed to fit with that theme. But if I were to wear the dress in pic 1 with the 70s necklace, bag and platform sandals in pic 2 (which I think I could and would), it would suddenly take on quite a different, more Funkytown vibe. So I can get that thrill of variety without buying something new. And of course it’s a fun challenge too

Hi Brooklyn --

Catching up here which means I can really just be an echo of all the above!

Definitely catching the 40s + 90s influences and remain impressed by your ability to find amazing floral skirts in a variety of silhouettes.

I use my 3 style personas for shopping and outfit creation in a very similar way to how you describe using your themes -- but your approach is like the mega-advanced version!

Do you ever think you'd fall in love with one theme so much you'd make it recurring and morph it a bit (so, say...Dark Romance becomes 40s Femme Fatale)? Or do you like to move on every year or so to keep the creativity fresh?

ps just posted a crummy-weather version of one of your PC dresses (the blue print) -- such great fabric! Can see why you added more to your closet.

Your answer here to SarahD8 is so helpful. It illuminates the genius of your approach. You have found a way to shop, style and dress yourself that incorporates your interests and personality while providing an engaging, fun pursuit. So holistic! I admire the fact that you have a strategy to keep from over-purchasing.
I struggle with the styling aspect, but that's exactly where I need emphasis. This inspires me to brainstorm to find a way to make outfit creation more enjoyable.

Thanks Opaline, Janet, Lyn, Shevia and RobinF.

Thanks Joy. I think if I pouted my look would skew more sulky than sultry! I'll leave that to LB :)

Thanks suntiger. Yes, come for a shop! Bring Janet and we'll do a teal hunt first. Hopefully Bijou can make the trip east and join us. First stop Cue and then Veronika Maine.

Thanks Smittie. I am obsessed with teal this year! I hope you find your midi. I prefer the asymmetric styles to the straight hemmed versions, especially with tall boots. Something about the cut and the flash of skin that makes it more flattering.

Thanks Bijou. LB does have great poise doesn't she? I love that word, and the idea of it. Definitely something to strive for. And stop tempting me with the teal jacket :)

SarahD8, thanks. The themes are pretty flexible, and crossover is definitely permitted. I do use them as a shopping guide. So if I am drawn to something at retail (and this happens a lot), I think about how it will fit with my themes. I want it to fit in with at least one, but preferably more. That helps me to keep my goals straight, and makes me less impulsive. It also means that when I am considering buying an item I think a lot more about what sort of outfit I am going to make from it. So I am less likely to end up with a wardrobe orphan. In terms of dressing, I am definitely a mood dresser and I enjoy the creative aspect of "styling" a particular item. So I enjoy thinking about what vibe I want to go with today ie whether I feel like going BJ, funky or dark or some sort of mix between 2 or more of those themes. I think of funkytown as more of a warm weather theme. I suspect it will take a back seat over the winter and the other themes will dominate (a dark theme feels more seasonally appropriate in winter). I also like to use one theme to inform another. So I was inspired by the BJ theme to experiment with combinations of blue, green and gold, and that's what I have been doing lately. But I am also creating what I would call DP or FT outfits using that colour combination. Really, it's a lot of fun! And it helps to direct my interest in fashion away from browsing and purchasing and more towards the styling process.

As always, I just love this -- hearing about your inspirations and how you interpret them into a series of elements that you then take action on is so, so great.

I love that abalone necklace, and the jacket-and-boots outfit is such a great modern take on 40s attitude.

I'm curious how these themes work together in your wardrobe. Are they sequential (I'm done with Dark Romance, now I'm moving on to Dark Passage) or connected to seasons? Or do you switch them up from day to day (today I feel Byzantine Jewel, tomorrow I'll wear a Dark Passage outfit)? Or mix elements and this guides your shopping in some way?

nice theme. It will be fun to see what you come up with. I think this is my favourite theme of all the ones you have posted. There is quite a lot of room for interpretation here, but I think it’s more fun when the goal is less specific.

That dark teal colour and forest are great. Among my favourites. I scout them out now.

Thanks Jenni. As flattered as I am, I don’t think I look like LB at all! Similar hair colour is all I see. I do love some sheen too and am glad metallics are in. It’s also great to be wearing boots again. And you need to spend some more time watching old movies. A theme called “The Big Sleep” just didn’t have quite the same appeal :)

Rachy, great! I hope you share the results.

Liesbeth, thanks. It is a broad theme and I am sure is capable of multiple interesting interpretations. As with my other themes, I’m trying not to be too literal in how I interpret my mood/inspiration pics. I like the creative process of putting together an outfit from scratch with certain themes in mind. I’d also love to see what you come up with on the same theme. Sounds like the makings of a forum challenge :)

Sally, thanks. The teal bag is sooo adorable. It has fast become my favourite wardrobe item. Even more than the ombré jacket. It had to happen one day :)

Thanks FC. That is very kind. I am not the least bit sultry! I will have to work on doing “the look”: head down, eyes up.

Well now to the serious stuff. Great inspiration pics. She does look rather like you actually? I can see the inspiration and how you have married that into your looks. Love the dark skirt with the top picking out a secondary colour. Sheen! One of my fave things!
On another note I enjoyed this year’s first wear of my patent cobalt boots on Monday, as well x

Was a little worried when I read the title! Perils of being a GP, a little too similar to something else! Now will go back to look at your pics and read post

I love a good theme! And I like your definition of Dark Passage. I’ve got to try my hand at your theme

You are so good in translating a theme and a moodboard to actual outfits! And I'm intrigued: I also love forties style for some of the very reasons you mention:
"Their style was a balance of hard and soft elements. The hard - a dark, masculine style suit (houndstooth or pinstripes); sharp shoulder pads; a pencil skirt; a mannish fedora hat worn at a rakish angle; chain smoking (!); lots of attitude. The soft - a voluminous, silky blouse, a nipped in waist; exposed skin (hemlines were getting shorter); long soft wavy hair; a husky voice. "
But in my personal style it translates completely different :-D. I guess it's your dark romance streak with some gothic elements in it, three things that are very far from my personality and style affinities. I would take the same inspiration and mix it up with (or emphasize the): minimal, relaxed, current :).
It's interesting to see how the same inspiration can lead to different roads and to be clear: I love looking at your outfits to try and learn from your process and think you always look great.

EDIT: am planning to do some recent WIW's soon :)
