It feels like we went straight from winter to summer this year, no transition. I relish the opportunity to wear wool, velvet and dark colours in our short winter, even though I don’t love the cold. Bijou understands! </p> <p>And thanks for all the outfit love. Especially the burgundy maxi coat. That was quite a find. It’s very long and fairly lightweight. Wool, but unlined. With high slits at the sides. Good for striders like me. Kind of perfect for my climate and style of dress, as it works well with long skirts. I bought it in black too. Although plenty of people in my grey, long-winter climate do in fact feel great in dark monochrome all winter -- or maybe they just lack imagination or access to alternatives.&nbsp;</p> <p>It doesn't work for me, though, or not for the whole season&nbsp; at least. But I am finding this year that darker shades are more available in warm weather items than they have been in the recent past. For example, I am seeing dark brown linen skirts. It’s quite the change. I crave more contrast and lightness in warm weather but in winter I’m quite happy to go dark. I wonder if differing climates affect our preferences? Our winter is comparatively short and mild, while our summer is long. If I had a long, harsh or grey winter I might find wearing lots of dark colours depressing. But, in my case, I really enjoy the change from endless summer.</p> <p>I favour monochromatic looks in dark brown and deep wine. But I also like dark olive, dark teal and dark green. I think a monochromatic outfit looks better if there is some textural variation and some variation in the colour of the items (not too matchy). </p> <p>Pictures 1-9 show some of my winter outfits that I think fall within this theme. (Some I have posted before.) I do sneak in some pattern sometimes and also like gold jewellery for a little contrast.</p> <p>Pic 10 is a more recent, warm weather version. Although I think of dark monochrome as more of a cool weather look, I dabble with it in warm weather. I especially enjoy it for evening wear or dressier occasions. Exposed skin can provide sufficient contrast for me in warmer weather. </p>
