I often use a couple handfuls of borax thrown in with the wash ( I use All or Purex Free and clear) and that usually rids clothes of scents ( including animal - had a male cat a few years ago who occasionally marked).

Spray with vodka (full strength, will not leave any smell of vodka, promise) and then hang in the sun. It works very well on sweat odor...maybe for this as well? You can do this without removing the tags so maybe try before washing?

I use a detergent called Atsko Sport Wash that’s the only laundry detergent I’ve found that can get perfume smells out of clothes. It’s amazing. I use it on thrift store clothes especially. I’m pretty sure it’ll work on my new Gap jeans - will report back.

The box of activated charcoal idea might work for my perfume scented Acne boots (consignment purchase) - I’ll have to try that. I put them in a drawer with little activated charcoal sachets but that wasn’t enough to help.

Keep the suggestions coming. Looks like we can all learn some tricks. For example, I was sure that perfume was a lost cause.

I have had more success than I expected with my husband's clever idea of blasting the garment with our ozone generating device. We got this device twenty years ago for killing mold spores, and use it primarily for that purpose. We've moved house a lot, and every place seems to have its moldy corner.

Anyway, apparently he is really onto something. I did a very cursory reading, and it turns out that using ozone to clean garments seems to be getting popular with professions dry cleaners:
https://americandrycleaner.com.....e-garments

I'm at maybe 85% improved in less than 24 hours. Nonetheless, that last 15% can be pesky. I'll give it some consideration. I have to try out several other dresses which are currently on order, and see what makes sense for me.

This is going to sound nuts, but I have a weird trick learned from an allergy FB group. I have contact allergies to a few chemicals that show up in fabric processing and this weird trick is to soak the item in milk before washing. It was specifically listed for formaldehyde...the molecules bind to the milk solids and then wash away in the rinse.

I don't know if the science would be the same for dye odor but I tried it one time with a seriously strong smelling T shirt and it worked perfectly. Depending on the cost of the dress and how much you want to keep it, it may be worth a try. Viscose is tricky to wash anyway, so it might not be worth the risk if it was a costly item.

I have washed smelly jeans in a white vinegar solution and then hung them outside. Sometimes this worked and sometimes it didn't. I am not sure I would do that with a dress. I had to wash the jeans several times before the smell was gone.

Re perfume smell: I bought a vintage Coach bag that smelled of perfume. I put it in a closed plastic bin with a dish of aquarium charcoal for a month or so and the smell came out.

I'm having a problem with a pair of utility pants that I bought on final sale from the Gap. They smell strongly of perfume, obviously from someone who returned them. I have washed them a couple of times and the smell is still there. If they were not final sale I'd send them back but in the meantime maybe I'll try vinegar. If the smell doesn't come out I'll never wear them, so if it were me, I would probably return the dress.

Personally I would just return it. I have found from experience smells rarely leave to my satisfaction. I have a very sensitive sense of smell and that even when you wash or air it out- the smell seems to return- even faintly. Sometimes it’s the fabric, sometimes it’s the dye, sometimes it’s the finish- you never know anymore. I no longer waste my time- back it goes.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Try some non destructive methods. So you can return if hey don’t work. I’d try hangin it outside in the sun for a few hours.

I’d take it to a reputable dry cleaners to see what they say. I recently bought a cotton+silk Tommy Bahama shirt for DH, and it had an off-putting chemical smell, but hanging it outside on a breezy day, then a tumble in the dryer with no heat did the trick.

Thanks Aliona for the validation that I need to be concerned. The dress is intentionally more faded looking than is apparent from the photo. So if it got moderately more faded looking I would be okay with that. I’m more fearful of the smell never coming out at all.

I had that happen once with a pair of jeans. Loved them, kept them, must have washed them 6 times, sprayed them with supposed odor removers and never ended up actually wearing them because of the smell. I didn’t try vinegar —A désigner friend recommended it but also said it might fade the colour. Hate to say it but I’d recommend returning, unless you love it so much and can afford to swallow the cost in attempts to remove the smell.

Just received an online order for a beautiful dark navy dress. Beautiful dress, seriously stinks in the literal sense. It was wrapped well, and the other items in the order don't smell. So I'm pretty sure it's that intense dark dye smell people have recently mentioned on another thread. (Greyscale's one about whether/when to stop jean shopping for perfect fit)

I like this dress enough that I will contact the vendor (Zapppos). But I'm wondering if anyone has been successful in washing out such odors. If I were to take the gamble and keep it, I think I'd soak in diluted vinegar overnight and then rinse it out, but unsure if that will be sufficient to remove odor. Dress is 100% viscose. Any experience?
