Well, if that is a navy and charcoal combo, like you said, then I really do like the scarf that you added, because it makes things more complex. You notice the scarf, and everything else is "dark."

My poison eye is reptile print anything. Croc I could maybe wear, like a purse or wallet, fake. But snake print, never, even fake. It is sharp, but I saw some bad photos of killing snakes, and also snakes are not my favorite.

Janet, ouch! What a great story - it is almost worth enduring the bruise to have that tale to tell! I don’t like to admit how much I enjoy seeing these bruises and the stories behind them. They are a metaphor for life. Thank you for sharing!

Kkards, I love that our styles can evolve and that the forum provides a gentle nudge to move out of our comfort zones. It is great encouragement to keep pushing the dark neutral envelope.

Goldenpig, your punk bracelets are taking me back to my roots! I just ordered a leather cuff, inspired by your posts. Can’t get enough edge these days.

lol. Ecchymosis Chic—these colors pretty much sum up my closet
For a long time I didn’t wear navy and black together because, honestly not even sure anymore. But Angie’s examples, guidance and gentle advice “cured” me of that. And now I’m all in on navy and brown. And who knows what’s next.
And Rock, you look fab. Not a bruise in sight, just a sharp put together women ready for what ever comes her way

I really like your outfit and love dark moody color palettes! The light touches help brighten it, and I usually add some silver jewelry or other touches to all all-dark outfit.

I seem to collect bruises and am often struck by the colors, LOL. Here is one of my best ones, but just a few hours after the incident, which occurred about 12 years ago — it was even “prettier” the next day! This is what happens when a professional MLB baseball player hits a searing line drive foul ball and you catch it with your stomach. I was watching and there simply was no time to react. I’m just glad it hit *me* — I was sitting with one of my dearest friends with his four young children and his wife, who had bone cancer at the time. Talk about taking one for the team! My husband and I joked about me getting a tattoo of a baseball in that spot, LOL.

Dee and UmmLila, thanks for the boost! It gives me some confidence to carry on with this experiment.

Firecracker and Goldenpig, I’m LOL at the bruise inspiration! Olive and eggplant would be fantastic. Goldenpig, the challenge is on! This is the specific bruise I will be channeling, complete with burgundy, indigo, and mustard. The incident involved falling down the marble staircase at our state capitol after testifying. I wore some leather soled Donald J Pliner boots, back in 2016. The soles had gotten wet going in to the building, and they were no match for the marble staircase.

Can't wait to see your burgundy/indigo/mustard ecchymosis chic challenge outfit, Rock! Way to take back power from the 35 year old dig. Post it with your bruise photo, LOL. Love that we can find inspiration in the strangest places. And PS I like Cotopaxi too! My daughter hates it, too colorful and hurts her eyes, but I love the retro stripes and happy colors.

I love charcoal and navy. This outfit is super fab on you, Rock! I do think the scarf adds a lot to it, not because the colors don't go, but because it's beautiful and lights up your face. You (and Goldenpig) got me thinking how bruises--once you get past the pain they evoke--can present some artful, rich color combos. I like olive with black and if I were going to use a bruise for inspiration, I would combine olive and eggplant or burgundy.

Goldenpig - I laughed out loud at Ecchymosis Chic and decided that I will own the challenge of combining burgundy, indigo, and mustard and send a WIW of my Bruisey Couture. Also, I must admit I tend to memorialize my cuts and bruises in photos.

Star - I agree that dark neutrals make winter dressing easy and that the certainty of it is soothing. I much prefer to dress for fall and winter.

Jenni, Helena, and Jaime - letting go of a comment is tough, especially when there may be some truth to it. I'm going to keep working through this challenge for a bit.

Cat2 and RobinF - The bridge piece was definitely a help. And Sloper, the Hermes scarf was bought on a whim about six months ago on may way back from Italy when I wanted to divest myself of some extra Euros at the airport. It has turned out to be a workhorse. Yay for your Hermes - I hope you enjoy your gray scarf as much as I enjoy my navy one!

Angie - Wisdom as always. Point well taken on being an urbanite who never wears black. I'm going to try to amp up the persimmon in my wardrobe. It is my color of the year and I need the infusion of hope. Thanks for the encouragement to challenge my poison eye.

Irina - Now that I'm on the bandwagon of challenging my poison eye, I'm going to dip into navy and black. I agree that it looks chic. I bought a black and cream striped COS blouse that might be begging for some navy. I also recently bought a dark brown Ba&sh leather jacket that might work with black. Thanks for the ideas.

JAileen - When I'm not at work, the utilitarian outdoorsy brands save the day! I may not get comments on my outfit, but when it is 20 degrees F outside, I'm right at home in my Cotopaxi puffer. And your navy hat is fab!

What Jaime said! You do not look like a bruise. You look like a woman having fun with fashion. I personally think black and navy can be a sophisticated combo. Personally, I would tend to use shine (as you have here) or texture or a 3rd piece (like the scarf) to tie them together but another way I'd do it is with colour blocking.

Your outfit has a lot of interest and looks great.

Today I’m wearing navy from head to toe - dark wash jeans, navy heather LS tee, navy fleece vest, navy clogs, and my new dark bluish grey puffy jacket. I was volunteering at our food pantry, and someone came in wearing a sweater with cats knitted into it, and everyone said oh, how cute! I laughed and said no one commented on my outfit, and another woman similarly dressed (fleece, jeans, etc.) said same here. And we stood together naming off our utilitarian outdoorsy brands - Eddie Bauer, Columbia, Patagonia, etc. I felt fine in my outfit. Later I’m adding a navy wool brimmed hat and navy gloves.

I like your outfit and don’t think of any bruises when I look at it :)

I’ve started wearing black and navy around 2015. I remember trying it together in one outfit in a COS store and a sales assistant commented that it looks French. French or not, I liked it, probably because navy pieces from COS are often made in dark navy.
I don’t like to wear a bridge piece.

The only dark combination I don’t like is burgundy and true navy, a combination often used in uniforms.
For years I had a poison eye about brown and black but I started wearing it again. Brown must be not too warm, not rusty.

YES! Rock, smashing that you're re-thinking your poison eye. It's sooo freeing! Navy and black is awesome together - especially with metallic or white accents.

You wear this combination fantastically well! PLEASE carry on. The pattern in the scarf makes the look, to my eye. Very punchy with your hair, which it matches It's the perfect bridge piece to have helped you feel fab in a new-to-you look. I see a wonderfully pulled together person and not a bruise.

ETA: I am an urbanite. I live IN the city of Seattle in a loft, and don't wear black! I have zero black wardrobe items. I don't wear dark from head-to -toe either. I wear navy tops, and sometimes navy bottoms with the navy tops, but they are broken up with cream or gold.

AND! FWIW. I think that ALL colours can be worn together when you find the right versions of them, and/or pull them together with an accent that harmonizes them.

It’s been so interesting seeing the comments on here about color combinations! I don’t like black and navy together without a bridge piece like your scarf. But I get really excited when I have one and it sparks new ideas. That could be a scarf, a print top, a color block shoe or bag, etc. The voices I am currently ignoring are whatever influencers are being amplified here as if they are gospel who are currently preaching that prints are tacky or that you can’t pair black with everything.

I feel it’s a shame to hold onto a 35 year old comment if you want to do it. I understand though how these comments stay with us. I still remember one from when I was about 16! Another girl, one year older- “Oh Jenni, you always have to be in the limelight don’t you?” (There was some truth to it LOL, but it hurt.)
I think you look fab here, especially with the rhinestones on the jacket! Awesome! And not at all like a bruise!
But as Goldenpig says, maybe just own it!

I think you look great in dark color combos! Love the Hermes scarf. And Lululemon pants are a great comfortable work pant solution. Your shoes are really cute too! Navy and black is a classic combo. And bruises would be a fun way to mix colors. You've got to add in the burgundy, indigo, and mustard somewhere in there too. I love burgundy and black, and burgundy and navy and rust. Ecchymosis Chic!

A couple of months ago Angie posted on Solid Dark from Head to Toe. The forum was divided. Had I weighed in, it would have been a yay. Maybe it’s my closeted affinity for all things urban, or maybe it is simply that solid dark allows me a modicum of professionalism when suiting is not a must — whatever the reason, I’m a fan.

I love mixing navy and burgundy, olive and charcoal, and chocolate and medium gray. However, I have a poison eye for other dark solid combinations. I can trace this back to a conversation I had with a dear friend and law school classmate about 35 years ago, when I told her that I planned to wear a navy and black combo, and she replied, “I would never wear that. It would look like a bruise.”

To this day, I avoid wearing navy and black, navy and charcoal, or chocolate and black, as I have experienced all of these color combos in various bruises throughout my life.

Lately, I have been rethinking my poison eye. I love these color combos on others, and think they look sophisticated not at all bruise-like.

Today I broke free and wore a navy and charcoal combo. The lighting is not great in the photo. The cardigan is Maje in dark gray with rhinestone argyles. The shell is Vince, in charcoal heather. The navy pants are Lululemon, which is my secret weapon for work pants, and the navy patent Mary Jane’s are Labucq. The scarf is Hermes because, as I was running out the door, I had a little bit of bruise panic and needed a bridge piece to lower my poison eye anxiety.

Do you have dark solid color combos you enjoy wearing? Do you have a poison eye for any color combos? Do you hold on to any fashion “rules” you learned in your formative years that may or may not make sense now? I would love to change my poison eye as it pertains to “bruise” color combos, but it is proving to be a bit of a challenge.
