I took the kids to a movie the other day (local theater does a 10 am showing for free) and saw a wonderful example!!! They're rare, but that makes it even better to see.... A mom with 3 kids, one an infant. In white skinny clamdiggers, a red (berry?) top with drapery in the front and a yellow patent bag. I missed the shoes, moving my own herd along :)
Do you ever look at the landscaping of a house and think it just is so easy to look at? That's what I thought of this mom.

I second what Dani said Becky - you are doing a sterling stylish job. Keep it up. I thoroughly enjoy seeing you blossom on this forum.

Marlene, you are clever. I never thought about the aspect of role models before (or lack thereof). In Europe, where there is also little domestic assistance, SAHM’s generally look fab because most of them do. You’d look out if you didn’t.

I’ve found that it’s easier for mothers who work to maintain a stylish appearance because they have to. It's part of their job. As always Patience, your thoughts are grounded and sensible. You rock.

Ana, when you are good and ready, your baby time will come. And if it doesn’t, that’s okay too.

Hi All - I'm a part time SAHM - i also work from a home office so i usually dress very casually. My boys are 10 & 15. I always thought working out of the house would be easier as they got older, but it's actually become even more challenging. We've got lots of activities and running around to do that would be tough to manage with a full time office job. My hubby travels quite a bit so he's not really able to help with the chauffering etc.

I agree with Patience, here in US it is extremely helpful to know other moms in your neighborhood and become a part of that community. It can be very rewarding and give you a great sense of support. I don't know if it's more of a challenge in other areas of the country, but I feel very fortunate about being here. Sorry, I know it's off-topic, but I hope you guys would forgive that.

On the fashion topic though, I always felt like there is more mom-friendly stylish clothes available in Europe than in US, I mean, inexpensive, washable and good for public transportation. At least that was always my impression. Here I often feel like I have to choose between sweats and silk dresses, if you know what I mean.

Hmm. Shannon, I realize you said you're not judging or preaching to others, and I respect your opinion, but personally I'd still prefer if we could keep statements like "dayscare is a scary place" off the forum. Sadly, horrible things happen in any setting - within the nuclear family, amongst extended family and friends, in a daycare, with a nanny, at school, etc. That doesn't mean that any of those places are generally unsafe or scary. I wouldn't want any mom who currently has her child in daycare or is considering it to think that she has to justify or defend that decision.
Could we keep it to talking about style and the challenges of being a stylish mom etc.?

Becky, you look so cute in the photos you've posted recently! I think you're doing an excellent job on your style development!

It is sad that there are no role models for stylish SAHMs. It's a tough line to walk because I could justify the clothes when I was working so I still have that "taste" for work clothes that weren't subjected to making messy lunches, breaking up crayon fights or even hugs and kisses from adorable little ones carrying crayons or markers. I woke up one morning and decided I could still look good even if I had little ones and I deserved more than capris and t-shirts. I think it will continue to be an ongoing evolution for me. This site has been such a blessing, especially the forum where you can get instant feedback and help with concerns or problems. If only the real world worked that way too *sigh*

I'm lucky to be able to stay home and my family is close by, but I do miss working some days. I don't know if I'll go back when my youngest reaches school age, I'll have to see how I feel at that point.

Thanks for recognizing this niche and time in life, Angie. As most of you know, I was not stylish even before having children, and still have a long ways to go, but I feel I am learning and making progress. It *is* just as easy to put on figure-flattering clothing as baggy "mom clothing," once you have them in your closet. The time, effort, and money of getting to that point is still what I am working on.

Shannon, I hear you on the daycare concerns. That is a major reason I chose to temporarily put my career on hold to stay home with my own children. It hasn't been easy (heaven knows), but I have grown a lot as a person in ways I would not have if had I gone back to a paid position after the birth of my daughters.

Angie, you could write a book on moms and fashion. I bet it would be a bestseller. I'd be glad to help in any way.

I wish I was a SAHM. But you all know that. I've been fortunate with daycare, but it is certainly not cheap. I think that in the US the best plan for getting support as a SAHM is to network as much as possible with other moms. This really can make a big difference. Here in Austin, I know that there are even several instances of people basically forming communes to share the responsibility of raising children.

As far as fashion goes, I've decided to let the European moms be my role models after Angie first mentioned this a while back. I also think that moms who feel like they can't be a mom and dress well are selling themselves short. We are moms after all-- we shouldn't be treated as superhuman but in reality we come pretty close. My guess is the truth is closer to Angie's experience with her clients. Most moms would love to get out of the mom clothing rut but just don't know how. (Hence the book.)

One of the reasons that I am hanging around this forum is because it is SO HARD to stay stylish when you are a SAHM. There are no "rules" or role models so its hard. When I worked full time out of the house, it was actually easy to know how to dress...just copy the people you worked with, basically. THere are heaps of books that tell you the rules of dress for success. But once you get to SAHM status, there are no more rules. I found myself floundering style-wise since all the other moms looked like hobos on the playground. And I felt uncomfortable if I made any attempts to get myself pulled together. But now, I just can't take it anymore. I figure its just as easy to put on flattering, well-fitting jeans as it is to put on baggy mom-jeans. So the past year, I have been focused on getting my act together and finding my style...one that is both functional for my daily activities AND put together.

Daycare is a scary place. You should do whatever you can to avoid it. I wasn't young when I had my first, but I hadn't grown up yet. I went back to work and took her to a daycare. We had a couple of bad experiences and we are lucky that they didn't turn out worse. We did find a great preschool/daycare facility when she was older, but I won't be sending my youngest to any daycare ever!

Twelve years ago I worked with a lady who's baby was shaken at daycare. This was a lady who had been providing daycare for 20 years, seemed reliable. Just the other night the lady I worked with and her son of almost 13 years old were featured on the local news. I hadn't seen or talked to this lady since the incident. Her son is permanently damaged and will always struggle. He was not born this way and it is so sad that because of that daycare he will die that way.

You can't trust anybody and shouldn't with a newborn baby especially. I have friends that take their kids to daycare. I don't judge them or preach to them, that is their business. I don't want to start any trouble here, I just wanted to say be careful when it comes to childcare. Still friends?????

Angie, I know what you mean about there not being a lot of domestic assistance readily available here in the US. I have to say up front that I don't have kids, so I am speaking as someone who has observed the difficulties other people have gone through (so I could totally be off the mark). A lot of Brendan's coworkers and people I know have had children here in Austin and have had a terrible time trying to find a daycare or babysitter. My hair stylist has a 2 year old and just had a baby, and it took them almost a year to find a daycare for their older child (they had to get on a waitlist for one that hadn't even been built yet). Brendan is 6 years older than I am and really excited to be a dad, but I'm terrified of having kids! Our closest family is mine, which is in Idaho, so we don't have that sort of help, and I am so worried that if we couldn't find a suitable childcare facility, I would have to give up school or work to stay home with them. I obviously don't know how I'll feel once I have kids, I might want to be a SAHM, but if I did still want to work, I would want that option available to me. I'm not sure why there is not a lot of help for SAHM in the US (there are a lot of theories out there), it worries me though and makes me very hesitant to have children. I am inspired by the women on this forum with children though--they all seem to remember that they are mothers, wives, partners, etc, but they are also still women and deserve to look good and feel good, too (and should NEVER feel guilty about that).

Oh yes! There's statuesque Taffy too. It’s a sweeping generalization of course, but yes, I do hold that opinion.

There are countries in which domestic assistance is readily available and a done thing (like Asia, Latin America and South Africa), and this makes being a stylish SAHM much easier. There is little domestic assistance in America and Europe and being a stylish SAHM is therefore harder. European life is more difficult from a transport point of view. People don’t get into beautiful mini vans with automatic doors and load up groceries in covered parking areas. Mothers get onto a bus, train, bike or walk with kids in tow in good or bad weather and schlep!

I couldn’t have children which is why we don’t have any. I am surrounded by friends, clients and family everywhere who have babies and older kids and live vicariously through them. We visit Europe every year and other parts of the world as often as we can. I constantly compare different cultures and am particularly fascinated by how mother’s and older women dress in different parts of the world. I could devote this entire site to that alone.

Thank you lasses. Just wanted to get my facts right.

I am constantly helping and convincing SAHM’s they CAN have style. Style does not mean traipsing around in designer handbags, high heels and a fake tan. In my experience, many SAHM’s in America have “given up”. (Take that information for what it’s worth. Remember it’s coming from someone who has lived in America for 5 years and sees what she sees).

You lot are an absolute inspiration to all SAHM’s and I want to tell the world about it. A very big feather in your cap from me to you.
