I have never heard of this but will have to look into it. I get between 5 - 10 migraines a month, with triggers being the weather, pollen, strawberries, and other assorted things. Mine respond well to Imitrex - after I take the medicine, the migraine is gone in about 20 to 30 minutes. I'd rather not take medicine at all, so I'm going to look into piercings. Thanks for sharing this info!

Yes StyleFan, some people do pierce both sides.

I guess it is another option to add to the list, hopefully you can find something which works for you.

The onset of my migranes was related to menopause and the change in hormones. I went for almost 10 years with daily migranes. I also worked full time. I don't know how I did it. I did try Botox. I don't think it worked. Topamax helped.
Maybe I should give Botox another chance.
I notice in the article you shared Jules they suggest the piercing in the ear on the side where the migranes happen. Is that what you did? What if it isn't always the same side? Maybe do both.

That is fascinating. I'd never heard of it. I had heard of the good efficacy of Botox, and here in Australia it is covered by our health system when specific criteria are met.
I count myself very lucky to not suffer from migraine.

Wow! What a fantastic lifehack. Thanks for the tip. I will keep in it mind -- I know a few people who suffer from migraines, and I doubt this is something they've heard of.

Maneera, that sounds absolutely horrifying. I am so glad you found a way to manage the frequency. The pain of the piercing was quite surprising but it is over with so quickly. This blog may be of interest http://bodymattersgold.com/blo.....-the-facts

Suz, I think my own migraines are peri menopause related.

It is remarkable that a piercing can have this effect, even if it is a placebo effect I am so grateful.

RoseandJoan, in the US Botox can be covered by insurance. Not sure about other countries.

Why are there so many of us? Sigh.

Jules, I am so glad you have got some relief from the migraines. They sound so debilitating. I used to get them once a month like clockwork (with my period) but as hormones have changed (and I moved to a different climate) they are far less frequent and most are less intense than what you describe, although still quite incapacitating when they occur.

It's amazing and mystifying that a piercing could have this effect, but whatever works, I say!! Thank you for sharing.

The biggest reason I had to quit my job and find a career alternative that allowed work from home is migraines. I used to get migraines every single day for many years....about 10-12 years I think. I'm extremely light sensitive as well. I had reached a point when I would sometimes have 2 different attacks a day, both requiring ibuprofen.

With lifestyle changes and diet changes, I now have a slightly better control of my migraines. I still have a migraine about 10 days a month or more. Eating a vitamin B12 supplement has helped me.

I have a high pain threshold so piercings don't bother me. I think I'd like to explore this option too. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Angie, I believe Botox is beneficial, the long term cost implication of the treatment must be quite significant. Would some insurance policies cover this as a treatment?

A friend sent me this information. One of the reasons I retired early was because of the severity of my migranes. Starting in my early 40s I began to have migranes once a month at the start of my period. Then they increased to daily. Now with medication and lifestyle changes (diet, Yoga, etc) I get fewer migranes. About 10 a month is my estimate. I would be thrilled to have some relief.
I am also chicken about the piercing. But thank you for sharing your story.

I'd never heard of this type of migraine cure. I HAVE heard of botox helping migraines, and it does work. A few of my friends are fans - although they said that the botox is painful.

REALLY happy your migraines have subsided, Jules. You must be much relieved. And a little fashion fab side effect too. Much love to you.

I mentioned in Deborah's multiple piercings post about my daith piercing which I undertook in February after reading how a number of people had experienced significant migraine relief.

My migraines were fairly infrequent but severe in nature, you could physically see swelling in one half on my face, I suffered with nausea, severe pain and have occasionally lost my sight.

I had been taking a combination of beta blockers and sumatriptan which offered some relief.

I found the piercing itself to be very painful but this pain only lasted a minute. I was able to lie on that side the same night and had no pain when using the telephone.

Now, five months on, I am amazed at the difference, I no longer take medication and my migraines have been reduced to the pain associated with a standard headache.

I just thought I would share this due to the high number of women who suffer with migraines and the low cost involved in trying this out.
