I've found that mineral makeup foundation is very light and doesn't feel like anything. As I've gotten older, my once thick brows and lashes have gotten thinner so need a little help, same with the lips, and just about everything else on my body. So now all the bras must have three hooks, and color needs to be reapplied on my lips after eating so I don't look like death warmed over. I wasn't wearing much makeup when I was young enough to wear deep/dark lip colors, and now anything too intense or matte looks hideous on me, so ladies wear those things while you can!

There really IS a sweet blush of youth, and my looks really ARE fading, but at least I don't have to worry about zits any more!

I feel better at work with a bit of make up. It only takes 5 minutes
A sweep of mineral powder foundation
Curl eyelashes and apply mascara
Brush brow mousse through eyebrows
Swirl on blusher or bronzer
I also have an Elizabeth Arden red lip balm which gives a lovely wash of red. I rarely top it up during the day though x

Ever since becoming a enamored with the french propensity for simple. I used to be able to get away (or maybe I just didn't care) without makeup. I think I look better with a little more even skintone so I use moisturizer/sunscreen. A little bit of foundation to cover any discolored areas to even out the skintone usually mixed with my moisturizer. I use blush and for me I have to fill in my brows but I don't do mascara since I don't like removing it. Adding some Rosebud Salve to give my lips natural color and making sure my hair is check makes me feel more polished in my 30s.

I have good skin and use a powder daily for shine, tinted lib balm and mascera. 3 minute face. On Sundays and date night I do a full face.

It depends on the condition of your skin and your comfort. I would suggest a bit of make up but I don't think you need a full face for work if you don't want it.

I don't believe makeup is mandatory, by any means. A lot depends on your natural coloring and the condition of your skin. It really depends on your comfort level.

I wear makeup daily. I am pale with some ruddiness in my cheeks, and I just feel more confident and pulled together with makeup on. However, I've worked hard to find "me, but better" colors and never want to look *too* made up. Both of my female bosses (in their '50s) don't wear even a tiny bit of makeup.

My daily routine is foundation, applied lightly all over (for me, that's easier than wearing in certain areas and hoping I've blended it correctly), blush, mascara, and something on my lips. Sometimes it's just lip balm, other times it's full-on lipstick. On some days, I'll wear eyeliner and eyeshadow. I like how my eyes look when they're defined and I enjoy applying eye makeup (feels like painting to me!), but it's too much hassle on some mornings. :)

I wear less makeup in the summer, partly because of the heat and partly because I have more natural color in my face. In the summer, I often scale back to tinted moisturizer and concealer, especially if I don't have a meeting.

Interesting reading about the different challenges presented by our varieties of skin colours. It was also interesting to read what you wrote Maharani about the rigours of a senior management job and the establishment of credibility via clothes.

I do find that YLF gives useful advice and support on the establishment of a signature style. In fact, I think that part of the really good stuff about this blog is that each woman is actually developing her own signature style, with the support of all the others. It has made a big difference to me in defining my style and especially my workwear because I too spend most of my life dressing for work. I love the advice re styling and casual wear too.

Hi Ramya,

I think it would be a mistake to reserve makeup for weddings, particularly as wedding makeup is really for parties, not work. I had pretty much given up on makeup myself but for a different reason-the difficulty of finding products that were the right color for my skin. Further, I don't have any bone structure-no cheekbones and shallowly set eyelids, so it is hard to know WHERE to put the makeup, particularly eyeshadow. For me, Bobbi Brown works well as the neutral look is one I can make work on my face AND works for the office, which is my main focus in life. You just look more polished, not obviously "made up" and at my age (58) it really helps you look "brighter", well rested, and not so tired.

Another rule-never use makeup somebody else gave you because it wasnt right for them-you deserve to get something matched properly to your skin tone.

My friend had given me 1 which was too light for her skin and would suit mine better...
Its almost BB like :)

Thinking further about it, I think its more of a mental block in my case . It was always drilled in my head make up is for wedding.. People wont take you seriously otherwise..

As a senior manager, I think it is important to look well groomed, but not appear to be a fashion victim. This can be a tough call. There are not so many of us Indians at that level, so all the more reason to put some effort into how you present yourself.

By the way, I hate heavy foundations too-I use the lightest formulation by Bobbi Brown and do not use it as a 'mask" all over my face, just those areas where the color needs evening out (forehead, nose, chin)-this is more than enough for day, particularly if you already have a good complexion.

The office environment has very little to do with style goals. I find most fashion blogs, including this one, pretty much useless for advice that works at the senior management level. Further, style goals are secondary in the office-if you go in wearing a different outfit every day it doesnt add to your credibility. However, a polished "uniform" that looks well thought out and consists of quality pieces, does. Dress like your female bosses is a good rule.

I went without for a couple of years because I was just too busy getting myself + 2 preschool girls ready in the morning, but now I'm back to wearing it every day. I'm so fair skinned that many make-up lines don't have a color that matches my skin.

I do a pretty full routine now: concealer for blemishes and under-eye circles, foundation to even out my skin tone, eye-liner and mascara so you can see my eyes behind my thick glasses, and lipstick so my lips help balance the glasses. I agree with everyone that the make-up should look natural, but I feel out of place in business dress without my face done.

Wow :)

I would definitely head to a make up counter today and buy an almost nude lipstick :)

I have "kind of" pinkish lips So I am thinking some shade of light pinks may be...

Let me see how it goes :)

As you ladies told me baby steps :)

Another problem I have is Chubby cheeks or if I politely put it, high cheek bones give me a racoonish effect when I use any kind of eye pencil... or kajal. I realize that concealer may help but, I am yet to find 1 that really suits my skin...

Sigh, I never realised that I was such a non-make up person

Blush and eyebrows!
I wear makeup to the office very day because it makes me look a little more polished, and feel more confident. I pretty much never wear lipstick, mostly because I can't be bothered to touch up. I stick with a lip balm, so the effect is very low contrast, but the moisture content the balm adds brings more polish to the look.
Anyway, my recommendation for makeup for the office is always blush and eyebrows, which, if done correctly, brings a lot to your face without looking like a lot of makeup. If you're feeling pale, a bit of blush or bronzer can help you feel much better. And doing your eyebrows means you can pay less attention to mascara, eyeshadow, etc, if you don't want to.

That said, my office makeup routine is BB Cream, mascara, tighlined eyeliner, brows, blush, and lip balm. Most people comment that I never wear makeup, even if I am, so it is all done with a very light hand.

P.S. - can we just marvel at the number of times I used the word "polished" in that post? I usually like a more RATE look, but not appropriate for my office.

I'm Indian and have had the best results using Bobbi Brown makeup, for a neutral but "enhanced" look. I find the foundations and lipsticks in particular match my skin tone better than almost anything else except a couple of lines specifically formulated for Indian/Hispanic women.

For the office I wear concealer, some foundation to even out my skintone, eye liner, mascara and a neutral toned lipstick (Bobbi Brown Slopes), rarely blush. This is more than enough at my age in a fairly conservative office, and looks polished.

Indian women tend to develop marked dark circles around the eyes so concealer really helps. Further, I wear dark brown, not black, eyeliner-it is much softer. The neutral toned lipstick wont look as contrasty as a red, which is why I stick with Bobbi Brown-her makeup never looks garish and is professional and appropriate. However, lipstick alone will tend to look garish, if theres nothing else on your face to balance it out.

My foundation is Natural 4, my lipstick, Slopes. I suggest you get a makeup lesson at your nearest Bobbi Brown counter.

I understand you very well. I have never used much make up and as SAHM I didn't wear anything. After working the last years, I find make up refreshing and fun, but I aim for a very natural look. How about starting with a lipstick with a hint of fresh color? I'm thinking *almost* nude. That makes wonders for your appearance.

If your eyelashes are very dark, but don't have much length or volume, you could try mascara too. I always use black and with your nice colors I think that would be ok for you too. The next up is concealer, foundation and/or blusher. But take baby steps I needed to relearn how to put on make up after years without and found good instructions on youtube. You also get good advice at Mac cosmetics stores and their prices are reasonable.

As for feeling blah - it may be the general winter darkness. It can be really tough.

I wear make up every day, but I always go for something subtle. Try to match your own natural lip colour for a nude and like Lyn, go for a brown not black mascara. If you don't want to wear foundation, just us a good match concealer and use it to even out small areas of discolouration and add a subtle shade of blusher to liven things up. You may need to experiment a bit but I'm sure you could perfect a morning routine quite quickly.

I always wear the kind of make up that makes me look better but very natural!
A sheer foundation, natural blush, mascara and a very natural lipstick!

Do you wear them? I never used to wear any make up to office. Just some lip-balm and some moisturizer on face.
But lately seeing all these tall, blonde , made up ladies in my office, I feel blah.

Let me tell you, I am very happy with my clothes, but the lack of tan which I had back in India, I feel pale and lack luster(I know it sounds ridiculous, as I have an Asian skin and no way pale :))

But at the same time, even if I wear lipstick/lip color I feel it's extremely high contrast on me.

What do you suggest?
