Another fan of Lululemon here..They are worth the extra $ because they don't fade or bag out & they last if cared for correctly. The pants don't ride down when doing yoga & their looser yoga tops cinch at the waist for inversions. The hoodies have thumb holes & some have kinda mitten cuffs. The running gear has what you need for running. I think it's good to have gear that makes working out easier.

I think it depends on the performance you are expecting out of it. My champion skorts are great for working on the golf bar cart, but for running 10 miles in FL humidity, nothing beats my Lululemon run skort. Same with tops - I chafed from a seam under the arm wearing an Adidas wicking tee on my half marathon. But it's great for a ride on my stationary bike or other quickie workout.

I am also a fan of Lululemon. They are pricey, but if you wash your workout clothes on delicate and air dry, their stuff lasts for years, not months. Many of their tops are made with antibacterial fibers, so there isn't a problem with odor. It has been a good investment for me--even though I initially choke at the register.

Compared to Lucy, I find Lulu, Nike Dri-fit and Champion brands more functional for cardio workouts. Lucy material does not wick moisture away very well, so I only like it for knocking around or light activity. They do have cute stuff though and I always see coupons.

If you are an instructor, both Lucy and Lulu may give you a discount (they do for the instructors at my gym)

I can't bring myself to spend big bucks for workout clothes. I recently got a lot of nice things on sale at JC Penney, of all places. I've also liked my Champion stuff from Target.

And I launder my things exactly as Janet does -- my machine has a "hand wash" cycle and I use Woolite and hang to dry.

I'm also a fan of Lululemon -- I have a jacket from them that I bought over three years ago in San Francisco, I've worn it to death and washed it many times, and it still looks totally new. I'm also very happy with the yoga pants, running capris and sports bra I bought there.

Lucy is also very good -- I have a couple of tops from there, a pair of running shorts, and a pair of casual pants (not workout) that are winners. I'm finding that even though LL and Lucy are pricier, their stuff holds up really well.

On the other end of the spectrum, I've also found plenty of good things in Target (Champion yoga pants have lasted me years, unfortunately they're getting faded) and TJMaxx and Marshalls -- I keep an eye out for gear from Under Armour, Nike, and Puma.

I also recently bought a running tank from Title Nine and I love it. It's white, which is tricky -- it's lightweight but not see-through, and it does a great job of giving just enough coverage with a sports bra while still keeping me as cool as possible on a 90% humidity, 80 F run!

Oh, as for the items holding up well, I machine wash everything on the gentle cycle (even my bras, in mesh bags), and hang to dry. No problems at all.

I am wild for Lululemon. Super pricey, but their stuff wears like iron. I've heard good things about fitcouture.com, but I haven't tried their stuff.

If you want something a bit "cuter," check out the Brazilian brands at sandiegofit.com and bodybybrazil.com. Brazil is home to some incredible workout clothes! And you can often find them on eBay, too. Planet Body is one of my favorite brands--I dress colorfully for Zumba!

I really like to go to Nordstrom rack, Tj Maxx, and Ross or Marshalls for mine. I am tall, and I can usually find the longer lengths because they don't sell as well. Nike in particular has a yoga-ish line that comes in a lot of the warmer colors. I don't know what you like to work out in (shorts, yoga pants, running tights, sweats, ect) but if I were you I would buy some good quality bottoms-- if you run, lift, or do aerobics I would recommend running tights (you can always put shorts over them) because they really do help prevent injuries and fatigue if you wear the proper compression sort. I wouldn't worry about if the bottoms are black and then get some wicking tops in different colors. I have them in black, blue, and coral-- but have also seen grey, purple, and olive so I am sure you will find some that won't make you look ghastly. After finding 60 dollar compression tights for 10 bucks and the high quality ticking gear for 5-10 dollars I can't go back to paying regular prices. I still buy jog bras and running shoes at full price though because I am a D-DD cup and want to prevent injuries (don't pronate, so cushion is important).

Another vote and recommendation for lululemon here. I haven't had any problem with mine pilling, but I am careful about what I wash them with. I admit I like the "anti stink" property, whether it is real or not. I can wear my tops a few times before I wash them.

I buy all of my workout pants at Lucy. I have worn and washed them many, many times over the past three years and they've held up beautifully.

I am one of the few people who does not recommend Lululemon. I have pants and two tops from them, and they have all been very difficult to care for. They pill and pick up lint horribly in the wash. Apparently you are supposed to wash them separately, but I just don't have the time or patience for that kind of TLC for workout gear.

I've had good luck at Athleta (now owned by The Gap) and Title Nine.

I've gotten cheap but very durable athletic tops at outlet stores like Brooks and Adidas.

Yep, I'm with Kristen on this. (I'm currently sitting here, fresh off the treadmill in running capris from Target and a top from Walmart.) I run a lot, so these clothes have been worn and washed a ton and they're still holding up after years. Stores like that have come a long way as far as style in workout clothing. Target especially really has some nice designs and colors.

I also have some cold weather running gear from Dick's, but it was pricey, and I almost freaked out when a top snagged from the Velcro on my iPod because I paid more for it than all my other running clothes combined.

There are a whole bunch of great option these days. I gave up on the Lululemon here because they didn't have anything over a size 12 (and their 12 was tiny).

I like Title Nine. I think they're a bit cheaper than Lululemon.

Lululemon makes good stuff, but is a little overrated (in my humble opinion). I have some yoga pants from Balance that cost half as much and wear twice as well. As other mentioned, you can find super-cute stuff at Target and Old Navy, but you can also try Title Nine Sports, Terry Bicycles & Be Present. Title Nine has the absolute cutest sporty-girl clothes I have ever seen. Also, if there's a yoga studio near you, check out their boutique. They often have really cute stuff.

I'm a yoga teacher and spend my whole day workout clothes- I totally understand that they have to be as comfy and cute as possible!!! Good luck finding stuff.

I'm sure Lulu pants are at least $100, possibly closer to $200. Tops will run you between $50-$100.

I have a pair of capris and a top by them that are at least 3 years old and still look new.

Great ideas everyone!! Lulumon has no posted prices on their web which always baffles me. Are they that far superior in wear? They do have really cute styles but I have no idea how much they cost. Color is always an issue at discount stores. I love warm colors and most work out wear is black, grey , pink or purple, not the best choices for me. I would wear black if I found some that fit great. I might go try on the Lulu stuff and see what the differences are. Probably way out of budget. Thanks!!

I have a small variety that I like, and when I need something I go to the outlets or TJMaxx to see what's on sale. I have found that I do well with certain Under Armor and Nike Sports bras. I like Adidas for my weight training and Nike or UA for my running clothes.
I work out pretty hard and do 1.5 to 2 hours a day. I need some clothes that will keep up with me, pretty or not. I do typically wear stuff in a "set" so I at least look coordinated.

Another vote for Lulu. I live around the corner from the original store (another point for Canada, eh?). They're pricey, and popular to the point of cliche here in Vancouver (there's one corner in Yaletown where you're guaranteed to see about half a dozen women in head-to-toe Lulu walking tiny dogs at any time), but they look great, come in tons of styles and colours, and last forever without pilling or wearing out. Can't go wrong with 'em, and I'd be surprised if you could find better looking or better quality gear anywhere.

I don't like spending a lot on workout clothes - aside from shoes and bras and I second the suggestion of Marshalls and TJ Maxx. Also Nordstrom Rack usually has standard brands like Nike and Adidas at reasonable prices.
