I'm inclined to think that sometimes nature needs to be nurtured, in my case anyway. I must have had my style there it just needed encouraging. If it was nurture alone there would be little variety here but each of us takes the same guidelines and makes them US x

Shiny's post made me realize that it helps to have women around you who get fashion and how clothing works. My grandma was a fabulous seamstress who could take clothes that didn't fit me (practically everything off the rack, it seemed) and make them fit.

Maybe there is a tendency toward the artistic or creative that you are born with, and it comes out in different ways, one of them being fashion, if that part of you is nurtured.

p.s. to Angie. We *will* get you together with my mom. What fun we would have!

That is a really cute article, Shiny, thanks for linking it!

I agree it's a mix of both. It can be taught, either early on by a parent who enjoyed fashion or later in life through sites like this, magazines, friends, etc. But there are definitely people who just...have a knack for it.

I would says it's some of both. There are certain people who just have an innate eye for fashion/decorating/art - it's a function of which side of the brain is dominant. But...I think fashion and decorating can be learned and even those with a natural feel for it do better with some nurture.

Angie, I wanted to hear others' thoughts before I chimed in with my own. My first reaction was that it's completely normal for moms to look at their children and see nothing but perfection!! I often look at my own kids and get all choked up over how beautiful and perfect and, well, better than me they are!! I think all the moms here will know what I mean by that.

Otherwise, I can identify with the author. I also envied those who seemed to have been born with natural style. I recall my best friend since grade school - she could wear absolutely anything (still can) and it looks great on her. Angie, you are the same way. Whereas for me it didn't come so easy, even though the desire and interest was always there.

But YLF has helped me realize why - and it's the clothes, not me. My body is outside the "average" range - I'm petite. My waist is just slightly bigger than how most mass-manufactured clothes are cut. Etc. It's no wonder I struggled with fashion early on.

Sweet article. Thanks, Shiny. How do you feel about it?

Laura, I would love to meet your Mum and we must arrange that! Sounds like you're a nature candidate, right down to those great aunts :0)

Michelle, that was very well explained and I agree wholeheartedly.

I also think the nature part helps the nurture part. You are off to an easier start if you were surrounded by a parent or relative who took fashion and style seriously. So while I believe 100% that good style and fashion sense can be taught, (that's why we have YLF), it does come more easily to some than to others. Maybe it's a genetic thing, maybe it's a focus thing. Still up for debate!

Oh that is a sweet article! I don't really have a good answer, except that I think maybe it's a bit of both. Lisa's point is also a good one, especially for people who might battle with some body image/size issues. You might know what looks great, you might know exactly how you want to look, but you just can't get there for a variety of reasons.

Sort of off the topic, but one of my favorite things is seeing my 2yo niece's reactions to clothes and purses. She already takes after her auntie!

Adorable article!! Thanks for sharing.

I'm actually going to take up the cry for the nurture side of the debate, using this site as exhibit A. How many people have come here feeling positively adrift in a sea of fashion options? And how many of those people evolve into stylish, confident ladies after mastering Angie's tips, absorbing guidance from the forum and watching others at various points in their own style journeys? The process may come more easily to some than to others, but in many cases style is acquired.

My own unique experience also supports my theory, imo. I literally had to be taught basics like which colours do and don't clash, which fabrics are mat vs glossy, etc. Through those teachings and considerable trial and error, I've developed a strong style identity and some degree of taste (though god knows I'm fallible there). I have vivid mental pictures of what I want and what will work for me, and as this site has helped to confirm, my basic concept is usually pretty sound (you guys step in and make it work by sorting out the details). One could argue that I was born with some degree of fashion-consciousness, but I know that nothing would have come of it if I didn't have people in my life who were willing to coach me in aesthetic concepts. My natural interest in the subject may have driven me to seek out additional information, but in the end I still would have to school myself in the ways of the fashion-savvy.
Apologies who have heard this rant before -- I went into it in some detail on my blog.

Cute article!

Is there a style gene?? Good question!

I just found out that three of my great-aunts were in the fashion business -- as buyers for department stores, retail shop owners, even modelling. My mom is in retail and is super talented at helping women put together outfits. Now I feel justified in pointing toward genetics! (Fashion as a genetic destiny, LOL!).

Think of Angie, whose mom modelled. Nature, or nurture?

Nice Shiny, good post..
I think both- I did not grow up in a fashion or style oriented family and in addition I am not very artistic and I have never known how to dress myself or dress a room (e.g. decorate).. I think they are very related skills. But my sister is really good at both- she is the kind of person that could make an outfit or a room look great with duct tape if that was all she had (an exaggeration to make a point..) where as you could give me $$$ to spend on a wardrobe and I still may not come out looking killer because I just can't see how to put things together on my body.

I definitely think some people have a knack for incorporating elements into an outfit that just "go together." And some people find fashion really interesting. But I also think that one's state of mind affects this a lot too. If you are going through a rough patch or bout of depression interest in your looks are probably going to wane.

I think some people do just have a more artistic bent to them and tend to effortlessly throw together fab combinations. And I think the desire to give attention to fashion/clothing choices is definitely part of ones personality. So I'm gonna go with nature as a big factor here....
